Why do people insist on smoking in doorways!?

If you want to go into a shop or a pub why is it acceptable to get blasted in the face with second hand smoke?

You go to a CHILDREN’S play park where you'll find groups of parents smoking....
School gates....

I mean Really!!!!

Why isn't smoking banned in outdoor public places yet!?

It's crazy.

@NeedAHoliday2021

Pressed post too soon. I had to bring my newborn twins from the special care unit to the car through the cloud of smoke. People are self absorbed and oblivious how their actions impact others.
the car....which is a bigger pollution problem..
dworky · 12/03/2022 21:53

Totally agree.

Pumperthepumper · 12/03/2022 21:54

People who drive unnecessarily/leave the engine running are also arseholes though. It’s not one or the other.

WildHorsesRunInMe · 12/03/2022 21:54

@RumpoleoftheBaileys

How is this hard?

Smoking is a vile, death-causing, anti-social habit.

No-one should be proud to do it and certainly shouldn't do it anywhere where children may be.

This, absolutely disgusting habit
Blossomtoes · 12/03/2022 21:56

shouldn't do it anywhere where children may be.

She was in a pub. Surely, of all places, you’d expect a pub to be childfree?

It's 2022

Pubs are generally full of families at the weekend enjoying lunch out?

Particularly pubs that like to advertise the fact they're family friendly

I am a smoker and was gob smacked to see a mum smoking in our local play park the other day while pushing her child on the swings.
I don't let my child ever see me smoke so when he was asking to go on the swings I didn't want to be pushing into a cloud of her smoke so had to say no.

That said OP, some smokers are just arseholes just like some non-smokers.

Yes !

Questiontellme · 12/03/2022 22:05

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea I can beat that, 3 years ago at baby sensory just finished, feeding my DC in passenger seat of car women in car park chatting, one gets out her cigs, bit windy struggling to get a light so she leans into the pram, baby was still in the bugaboo basinet, for a bit of shelter. I shit you not. Horrible, horrible.

YANBU OP, it's feckin rude to just stand in a doorway like you bloody own it too, unless of course you actually do, I smoked for 10 years and wouldn't have dreamt of doing this.

MagnoliaXYZ · 12/03/2022 22:06

I hate having to walk through other people's smoke - walking in to work is the worst for this and I work in a hospital! It's not that I'm worried about second-hand smoke, I'm perfectly aware that one breath of second-hand smoke isn't going to kill me, but it stinks.

Clarabe1 · 12/03/2022 22:10

I used to smoke but now I am one of those insufferable ex smokers who cannot stand the smell of smoke. However i am also not a whinging git. If people want to smoke leave them be, they pay enough tax! There are lots of disgusting habits, nobody is perfect- even you op.

milkyaqua · 12/03/2022 22:15

@use257

You're not going to die from that
Actually, it triggers asthma for me, from which I can die.
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/03/2022 22:16

I've never smoked , not keen on the smell but I have noticed if I walk past a smoker they put their hand down so their ciggie is hip level not face level

I do miss the smell of a Swan Vesta match ( has to be the proper pink tipped match on the sandpaper side of the box , none of your safety matches or lighters !)

Don’t limit your bullying attitude to just smokers!!! . Smoking is not as evil as alcohol - that’s an anti social drug that causes untold misery. Obesity is death causing. Let’s all get our judgey pants on and attack everyone who isn’t perfect. You sound a scream @RumpoleoftheBaileys
MarthaFokker · 12/03/2022 22:19

Why do some people insist on calling nicotine addiction a 'habit'?

A habit is biting your nails or picking your nose. Being addicted to nicotine is quite different and I think using the word 'habit' minimises that.

Eggshausted · 12/03/2022 22:19

@Blossomtoes

I haven’t smoked for ten years but I love it when I get a whiff of cigarette smoke. It’s a reminder of so many happy times.
Totally agree with you! I gave up 10 years ago, but still love the smell!
Squiff70 · 12/03/2022 22:19

@CannaBelieve what the fuck did I just read?????

Nobody has said cars aren't a pollution problem. Nobody said they're good for the environment!

When you've had your baby(ies) and they've spent time in NICU or SCBU, usually with breathing problems and often after being on ventilators, the very LAST thing you want is to carry them through a cloud of cigarette smoke from dirty, lazy assholes who have to stand in the doorway.

I'm pregnant, my twins were in NICU on ventilators, and every god damned time I set foot in the maternity building, some filthy fuckers are standing right in the doorway puffing on cigarettes - some of them heavily pregnant themselves!

Oh, and by the way... I'm very much an EX smoker!

ListeningButNotHearing · 12/03/2022 22:20

Because a lot of smokers are selfish and don't realise how rank it is to have to breathe in chemicals because of them.

chaosrabbitland · 12/03/2022 22:25

get a life , i smoke and im sick of people like me being pilloried and practically pegged on the same level as heroin addicts , never see any moaning about the drunks throwing up all over the pavements after they kick out of pubs and clubs on mumsnet though , or the cost to the nhs of treating them for alcohol poisoining when they are carted in to a and e , because of course all the people moaning on mumsnet about digusting smokers are the ones who are happy quaffing away on a glass of wine on a regular basis i expect , i guess its acceptable to fuck up your liver , but obviously just not your lungs

and for the record i am and always have been a considerate smoker . always outside no matter what the weather as i never smoke in the house , and iv yet to see someone smoking in an actual shop doorway and i live in a big city

Blossom64265 · 12/03/2022 22:25

This is part of why I read here. As a foreigner, I find it fascinating. Our indoor smoking bans include a radius around doorways and windows. It never even occurred to me someplace wouldn’t bother adding such a simple provision.

OnceUponAThread · 12/03/2022 22:27

Do you drive OP?

I don't have a car. I choose not to. I hate the fact that so much pollution is created by car fumes.

At my last few hospital appointments the doctors said the reason they give pregnant women (including me) a carbon monoxide test every time is because in cities like London all the car pollution means women have dangerously high levels.

However, I don't expect I can ban everyone from driving. (Although I would like to and strongly support a move to electric only cars).

I can't get worked up about a brief encounter with 10 seconds of second-hand smoke once in a blue moon. It doesn't affect me, I hardly ever see it, smokers have to smoke somewhere, and I can easily walk away if it bothers me.

There are far worse and more dangerous pollutants that I can't escape...

You’ve never seen anyone complaining about drunk people being sick on the street or alcoholics being a drain on the NHS? Are you sure? Where do you live?
louthomson · 12/03/2022 22:29

Can't answer as to why some people are inconsiderate and for example can't wait until they're outside the school gates, or stand directly outside the pub door when it's not raining.

But please don't forget that it's wildly addictive, and while it's easy for non-smokers to talk about how people should quit, it's a hell of a lot harder to do.

As for the hospital, I can answer that one - because most hospitals won't allow smoking anywhere on the grounds, you get the situation where you'll see patients standing just outside the grounds in a gown and with a drip because they're so desperate for a fag!

As a 20-year smoker myself and with a partner who smokes very heavily, I wish to God they would ban it completely!

As much as the anti smoking posts can be way OTT and hypocritical at times, especially when compared to obesity etc...you do actually see people moaning about those things quite regularly to be fair.

Pumperthepumper · 12/03/2022 22:31

I couldn’t give a shit if anyone chooses to smoke, that’s on them. I do care if they choose to spark up in a doorway or in a play park because it’s antisocial and rank. As is sitting with your engine idling, picking your nose in a cafe and spraying perfume on a train.

GrandTheftWalrus · 12/03/2022 22:31

I smoked outside a hospital when I was told I had lost my baby. I didn't give a fuck about signs etc. I was told on the day Boris had a party on my own that my baby was dead.
