Reading this was a shock, given recent events... www.rte.ie/news/primetime/2022/0310/1285699-russian-embassy-orwell-road-irish-government/

Southern Ireland...will ye stop 🤣🤣

Monty27 · 11/03/2022 02:11

@AfterSchoolWorry

Up to no good definitely.

Why they haven't been expelled is a mystery to me. Probably donating to political parties. 😒

As they always do. They have hands in every economy in Europe it would seem. No shit Sherlock. 😒
Monty27 · 11/03/2022 02:13

We're talking about Russia? Lol

you're gas @Bintymcbintface

LizzieAnt · 11/03/2022 02:17

@Bintymcbintface

Where's the nope.

Ireland... The whole island

Northern Ireland
Southern Ireland/ROI

Different currencies, heads of states, flags, capitals... Separate

Not sure if you're serious Bintymcbintface, but just in case - the name of what you're calling Southern Ireland is actually Ireland, or Éire if (and only if) you're communicating in Irish. It's sometimes known as the Republic of Ireland too, though that's really a description of the state rather than an official name. There was a Southern Ireland briefly , around 1921/22. It did have a different flag (a bit like a Union Jack plus harp in the middle). It was part of the UK, George V was monarch at the time. It hasn't existed for about 100 years now.

Anyway, back to the Russians..

Isn't the green bit South East Ireland? 😇
TomPinch · 11/03/2022 02:58

I mean South West Blush

(And, dear Irish people, I know the country's name is Ireland.)

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/03/2022 04:45

The ROI is not Southern Ireland in much the same way Africa is not a country.

Back to the thread. This is extremely worrying and I wonder how many bunkers there are within Europe. And by Europe I include the U.K. and the ROI, the Channel Islands and IOM as we all part of the European continent.

PicsInRed · 11/03/2022 05:13

This odd "Southern Ireland" business was quite the masterful derail of a Russia thread wasn't it?

It's not the first derail of it's kind since the invasion and I expect we'll see more of this in the months and years to come.

Except I’d expect pro-Putin trolls to quite enjoy stirring up fear about the prospect of use of nuclear weapons.

Weird on the Southern Ireland thing though.

Perhaps that's what a colleague was thinking of when he said "Ireland and the rest of the UK" recently in a meeting, in Ireland. I nearly died of embarassment.

CaptSkippy · 11/03/2022 06:58

WTH!? Were they planning a nuclear fallout shelter?

BaBaBlackberry · 11/03/2022 07:03

2 words bloody hell Shock.

@MurderAtTheBeautyPageant

The Russian ambassador to Ireland doesn't appear to be among their brightest or their best. I almost felt sorry for him when he was interviewed on RTE last week.
So did I until his subsequent video Hmm
@ochonagusochonoh The island of Ireland is two different countries, Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland
What? I'm only 6% Irish and even I know that's not true. Some strange posts on here.

I don't think it's nefarious. MN threads frequently go off at weird tangents.

Spot on.

I don't like the sound of this extension at all. We do not need so many Russian diplomats.

CliffsofMohair · 11/03/2022 07:13

@Bellusaurus

Don't be distracted by the Southern Ireland thing. That will be Russian Putin Bots in a Bunker in need of extension on Orwell Road, stirring up dissent on our harmonious Isle. Like they did Brexit ...
I predict a very special episode of Room To Improve
donquixotedelamancha · 11/03/2022 07:16

Am I the only one surprised that Orwell Road is in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown? I thought it was in South Dublin.

Please don't call it South Dublin, that's offensive. There is just North Dublin and Dublin.

It would be satisfying to watch Dermot Bannon go way over budget!

Ellaraine · 11/03/2022 07:24

@Frazzled50yrold,its not acceptable. Its Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland.

Southern Ireland is not a country..Fact

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 11/03/2022 07:34

What do the Irish government intend to do about this? Surely this needs to be stopped and the personnel there should be expelled?

GallopingHighRoad · 11/03/2022 07:35

I have it on good authority they were building a distillery to make illegal vodka from potatoes. They planned to flood Ireland with cheap vodka, killing off Russian vodka imports under a false flag operation.
