Reading this was a shock, given recent events... www.rte.ie/news/primetime/2022/0310/1285699-russian-embassy-orwell-road-irish-government/

Oh no! I hope the Russians don’t invade us! We are still dealing with the aftermath of the English invasions!we can’t afford more counties !!!

@Frazzled50yrold

'P.s. Southern Ireland is generally not considered an acceptable term to refer the the country of Ireland' Considering I live in Northern Ireland I consider Southern Ireland to be a perfectly acceptable term.
For those who live in the republic, we generally prefer it to be called the Republic of Ireland.

I don't know anyone who is from the republic who finds the term southern Ireland acceptable....and when it comes to acceptable and respectful names for countries, people are supposed to go by what the people in the country prefer!

Chamomiltea · 10/03/2022 23:28

While the border with Northern Ireland allows easy access to the UK, a base in Ireland also offers other political opportunities.
"Ireland sits as a neutral country outside NATO but within the EU. Russia loves putting its diplomatic knife into that crack and wiggling." Gulp.

in Iran the British embassy is to be found on Bobby Sands Rd

I never knew that!

Who knew the Iranians had a sense of humour.

I read about the suspicious number of staff at the Russian embassy last week. Clearly the HQ for their European spy ops. Surely the govt must be considering booting some of those 'personnel' staff out.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 10/03/2022 23:33

@GreyTS

And in Iran the British embassy is to be found on Bobby Sands Rd
I learnt this from a hot Iranian I had a fling with.

Omfg. A sense of humour???? You think the hunger strikes were amusing? You do realise that people deliberately starved themselves to death, right? And that other countries had solidarity? It wasn't a fucking joke then and it's not now either.
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 10/03/2022 23:41

Am I the only one surprised that Orwell Road is in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown? I thought it was in South Dublin.

I have checked, half of Orwell Road is DLR and the other half is SD. So will the whole thing be renamed or will it change name halfway along?

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 10/03/2022 23:44

Isn't Orwell Road in Rathgar? Confused by the Dun Laoghaire thing.

Yes, during an election the posters on the lampposts change when you cross the bridge over the Dodder.

Same
TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/03/2022 23:49

I don't think Dun Laoghaire Rathdown can change the Rathgar end. I definitely don't think the people at the Churchtown end will be ecstatic if they cut it into two roads!

Yes. The constitutional name Ireland is normally used.
OchonAgusOchonOh · 10/03/2022 23:56

@PaddleBoardingMomma - as with Frazzled, you come across as ignorant for refusing to use the actual name of the country despite being told your preferred term is considered unacceptable and disrespectful.

Ylvamoon · 10/03/2022 23:57

😱

Bellusaurus · 11/03/2022 00:01

Should have let them build the fabulous luxury bunker for us, then expelled them.

Might be a bit buggy though. Plus it'd be a re-run of the MN Victorian Safe thread when the keys for that cupboard in the basement can't be found.

Bellusaurus · 11/03/2022 00:07

Ooh yes and something ticking inside Shock

PerkingFaintly · 11/03/2022 00:08

Does add an extra dimension to Finland's decision to restrict Russian citizens' acquisition of properties in strategic locations.

Figrollface · 11/03/2022 00:08

Another one here who finds the term southern Ireland when referencing The Republic of Ireland/Ireland very offensive.
Can people who insist on using the term explain why they do so?

Bellusaurus · 11/03/2022 00:11

Don't be distracted by the Southern Ireland thing. That will be Russian Putin Bots in a Bunker in need of extension on Orwell Road, stirring up dissent on our harmonious Isle. Like they did Brexit ...

eggandonion · 11/03/2022 00:17

I live in Southern Ireland, at the very bottom. Like Cornwall is Southern England.
But if you aren't talking about Cork, Kerry and Waterford...just say Ireland or Republic of Ireland. It's really not hard.

Bellusaurus · 11/03/2022 00:22

Would have done great work for us on the housing shortage

@MysweetAudrina

My dh was in there recently and he said it was an underground car park. They showed him around. He was there for work.
"Do come down and see our Nothing To See." Grin

Quite some car park they had planned:
www.rte.ie/news/primetime/2022/0310/1285699-russian-embassy-orwell-road-irish-government/
"There's 20 storage rooms, ten power plant rooms, and four rooms with no description, which are called voids. The plans also included the provision of 13 toilets in the basement, which is considered unusual for a storage area."
