I hope the people berating the OP are giving all of their disposable income to human charities all of the time. Imagine going on holiday/to the pub/to a restaurant/buying flowers/new unnecessary clothes/plants for the garden/own pets etc etc instead of donating to human charities as surely they can't possibly think these things are more important than human lives Shock. And given that there has constantly been somewhere at war for centuries this must never change.

Anonaymoose · 07/03/2022 07:01

It's pretty clear there are a lot of people who do not understand how important the human animal bond is to many people.
I work treating sick animals in the community, helping those who's owners cannot leave their homes due to disability or mental health issues and I can assure you for many of them their pet is the only reason they get out of bed, they are an absolute lifeline for many people.
For some fleeing war leaving their pets behind will be unbearable, knowing they had food and shelter would go a long way to alleviating a lot of worry for many.
Not sure why so many are having difficulty understanding that.

User112 · 07/03/2022 07:03

Why should human lives come first ? Genuine question

Parker231 · 07/03/2022 07:07

@LadyPenelope68

All that’s happening to the women, children and men in the Ukraine and you want to donate to animal charities?? Sorry, I think that’s absolutely bizarre.
Why not? I’ve donated to both.
GimmeSleep · 07/03/2022 07:29

There is a lady on twitter Joy_Schnauzer who is in Ukraine with her dog, it might be worth looking her up to see if she mentions any charities in particular.

DEC has raised approaching £100m

I think it’s absolutely bizarre that you think it’s absolutely bizarre 🤷🏼‍♀️

Because human life is way more important than someone’s bloody dog!

Parker231 · 07/03/2022 07:42

@LadyPenelope68 - thankfully not everyone thinks like do

GimmeSleep · 07/03/2022 07:43

Is donating to animal charities and donating to human charities mutually exclusive then?

Shit, I didn't realise I couldn't donate to both

bluetongue · 07/03/2022 07:45

What is wrong with people? The OP can donate to whatever charity they want.

After the recent fires in Australia I ended up donating to a wildlife refuge on Kangaroo Island. They did amazing work under difficult circumstances and I think my donation was used well.

LadyPenelope68 · 07/03/2022 07:45

@Parker231
And thankfully most people have more compassion than you and aren’t like you and see human life as a priority over that of a dog/cat.

BuyDirt · 07/03/2022 07:46

Because human life is way more important than someone’s bloody dog!

I value animal lives too. It’s not a competition. And not all human life is more important/as important as animals lives. I know of a lot of bad humans, I’ve never met a bad animal.

People will donate to whatever cause they choose, I don’t care if you think it’s bizarre. Literally no fucks to give for your opinion.

Pop your thinking cap on…. Some humans won’t leave without their bloody dog!!

Well they’re idiots then.

@BuyDirt
And I’ve no fucks to give for your opinion either.

AlternativePerspective · 07/03/2022 07:52

If people want to donate to animal charities then crack on.

However, if they want to donate then they should go looking for sources independently, a thread asking how to donate to an animal charity when there are women and children losing their lives and livelihoods and homes is crass and insensitive.

So donate, but do it discretely.

Thanks op. Another thread about this a few days again was zapped, I have no idea why. Posters were angry that people wanted to donate to charity so MN deleted it.

I donated money then, and I will do more now.

My heart goes out to people fleeing with their pets. They are the ones I particularly want to help. And I won’t be apologising for that.

Anonymouslyposting · 07/03/2022 07:53

@MidnightMeltdown of course I’ve wasted money that could be better spent (I have also donated). I’m not saying that the OP is awful and I’m perfect. I just think that animals should not come before people and to have actually decided to give and chosen to give to animals rather than people is unreasonable (which was what the OP asked by posting here).

To be clear if OP had not posted in AIBU I would not have posted my view but she did - and if you look at the votes I’m in the majority.

Also, to those saying “animals didn’t start this” - nor did the civilians being attacked and killed.

ClemFandangoo · 07/03/2022 07:54

@BIWI

I will state why I've voted YABU as it really irks me when people don't. And I see it as cowardice.

While I think it's admirable that you're thinking about animal charities, what about all the men, women and children who need our help? Have you been donating to them too?

How do you know OP hasn’t, very presumptuous. I’ve donated to UNICEF and now I want to help the animals, maybe OP is the same?

In fact I wanted to post a similar thread but didn’t as I know it’d get backlash from people jumping to conclusions.

MissTrip82 · 07/03/2022 07:56

I’m glad you started this. I can care about more than one thing at once. Which is lucky, as otherwise there’d be only one charity in the world that would be deserving. We’d need a World Cup to work out which.

Personally I’ve found people who can GAF about animals tend to also GAF about people. The other way round? Not so much…..

Wonnle · 07/03/2022 07:57

PETA are an extremist organisation not an animal charity

ClemFandangoo · 07/03/2022 07:58

So much this

This exactly.

Theluggage15 · 07/03/2022 08:02

I don’t think it’s crass and insensitive and thanks for the thread OP. I not men’s lives don’t matter then Alternative? I also can care about more than one thing at a time.

Of course you can donate to both - but by doing so you are taking some of your donation away from people and giving it to animals. That money could make the difference between a person getting food, medical help or a way out of danger or not.
