To not buy non vegan food

242 replies

Ellie198712 · 05/03/2022 18:56

I’ve recently (2 months ago) gone vegan after watching Earthlings and thinking about how I can’t honestly distinguish between eating a dog or a cow.

DH isn’t vegan and has no intent of becoming one, which is fine, obviously ideally I’d like if we could be a plant based household but it’s his life and diet!

However I feel really uncomfortable buying him eggs and meat when I go to the shops. Today it’s caused a bit of a row as I popped into our veg shop to stock up on veg and he asked me to pick up milk and eggs. I said I didn’t really want to buy them 🤦‍♀️

He’ll eat it what he wants of course but I don’t want to buy things associated with animal suffering really 🤷🏼‍♀️

Seems a non issue to me. I went vegetarian for ethical and environmental reasons. Dh doesn't want to go fully vegetarian so he will eat meat when away from home but at home he eats vegetarian with me and we don't buy any meat products. Not a problem.

KidneyBeans · 05/03/2022 21:57

Apologies I didn’t see your posts about eating cows

That's because there aren't any

Grasping · 05/03/2022 21:58

@sadpapercourtesan

Ugh, my mother was like you OP. "Right kids, I've watched some claptrap on the telly, and I've decided that from now on XXX..."

Pure narcissism. And an embarrassing lack of maturity.

Indulge your orthorexic superiority complex to your little heart's content, but don't expect your family (or anyone else) to pander to it.

So ignorant

Many cultures around the world disagree.

Unless you think that I've worked in dog wet markets in the UK, you could probably safely assume I'm aware of this Confused

Wiredforsound · 05/03/2022 22:02

Your DH respects your food choices even though he may not agree with them. You need to do the same.

ButteryNuts · 05/03/2022 22:03

It's fine and makes sense. You shouldn't have to go against your own principles for someone else's benefit.

There are some brands I boycott, and if someone asked me to buy it them on their behalf I would refuse. Surely thats the point.

donquixotedelamancha · 05/03/2022 22:07

I'll be clearer. You said that saying dog was worse than cow is not a value judgement, so you don't need to explain. I was making the point that it is a value judgement.

However you then seem to say that you don't think dog is worse? In which case I'm confused why I got all the abuse, I thought it was for replying to the comments about the taste of dog?

Flubber88 · 05/03/2022 22:08

Most Vegan food lines such as Gro by Coop use A LOT of Palm Oil content. Rainforests are being destroyed for palm oil. Animals such as the Oranutan are dying because of this. I spent a month in Borneo in 2017 seeing the result of this farming for this new avenue of selling this oil. I have driven six or seven hours through Borneo past absolutely desecrated forests continuously.

This is not ethical either.

Cows that produce milk in this country would not exist if not for the milk producing industry. They simply would have no reason to exist except for you 'to make friends with a cow'.

A lovely idea on the advert but in reality it is not. The real world is not like this.

I have absolutely no problem with anyone having food 'lifestyle' choices but you must respect your partners choice also.

I must say I am also fed up of the last 20 years of various friends preaching to me after' seeing the light' in a food lifestyle whether it being Paleo, Veg or Vegan. Especially one friend of whom constantly lectured me on not buying products from Nestle and never eating meat again. The friend who I spent several very hard weeks with travelling Asia trying to get him Vegan food he wanted everyday and nothing from one of his banned brands.

15 years later same friend is now with a new partner and cooking steaks and show casing them on facebook!!!

People change. Please do not try and change people.

Peanut noodles sound lovely

Yeah, I thought that too. Loads of chilli. Sadly probably too many calories for me these days, I'm watching what I eat.

mummykel16 · 05/03/2022 22:16

@Booboobibles

Buy the Clarence Court Burford Brown eggs….they’re from proper free range hens rather than ‘free range’ hens packed into barns with body parts falling off etc.

Not sure about the milk though.

There are no free range eggs anymore

In all seriousness OP. This is a new thing you are trying out.
Where are you going to draw the line? Are you not going to KISS him because meat has been in his mouth?
I honestly think it’s great that you’ve made this decision but your partners barely had a chance to catch up with you
Buy the eggs. Better yet, find a proper free range neighbours and buy theirs. Just make sure they vax the hens

mummykel16 · 05/03/2022 22:23

@Migrainesbythedozen

Just be aware those 'movies' and 'documentaries' can be quite manipulative and deceitful, they are pushing an extremist vegan agenda and none of them, by experience, are above lying, distorting and manipulating the truth. Most animals are not treated anywhere near as bad as these extremist groups say they are.
Oh, many many are especially slaughter houses
Luredbyapomegranate · 05/03/2022 22:24

It would be far more productive if you encouraged him to buy the most ethical animal products available, and to eat less of them.

Rather than refused to but your partner food that he’s going to buy anyway, due to your 8 weeks of plant based zeal 🙄

Also, he’s your partner. And this will put strain on your relationship.

There's nothing about being vegan that means you have to eat palm oil, and especially not more than meat eaters.

And I don't think anyones under the illusion that if they go vegan all the cows are going to firstly, not be killed and secondly, continue to be bred to live out their lives in blissful pasture? That's not the goal or point.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/03/2022 22:33

@Carpy899

Would the people who are calling the OP a twat etc expect a Muslim to pick them up a bottle of vodka?
Plenty of staff in the shops are Muslim. They're getting paid to sell haram items to non Muslims - they're not required to drink it, after all.

No one has to pander to OP, but conversely she doesn't have to pander to them either. He is a grown man who I am sure can buy particular foods he wants. And yes vegans are superior because they aren't complicit to the torture of animals for food.
Flubber88 · 05/03/2022 22:35

@ButteryNuts. go into a supermarket tomorrow - anyone - look at the latest fancy 'ethical' vegan range, it will all contain oodles of palm oil.

And your comment re cows. Check out Beyond Meats advertising campaign on You Tube.

“What if we took this cow off the table and just made friends with her? #GoBeyond”

Yes they ARE selling the "illusion that if they go vegan all the cows are going to firstly, not be killed and secondly, continue to be bred to live out their lives in blissful pasture" Exactly that. I rest my case. Nighty

Gregsprinkles · 05/03/2022 22:38

Soya production is directly and indirectly causing deforestation in the Amazon rainforest leading to loss of habitat and therefore suffering for plants and animals on a massive scale. For that reason, yabu to avoid buying a few eggs.
Um, where did the OP mention soy products @GTAlogic ? Isn't the majority of that for animal feed, not human consumption, anyway? 😳
