To not buy non vegan food

Ellie198712 · 05/03/2022 18:56

I’ve recently (2 months ago) gone vegan after watching Earthlings and thinking about how I can’t honestly distinguish between eating a dog or a cow.

DH isn’t vegan and has no intent of becoming one, which is fine, obviously ideally I’d like if we could be a plant based household but it’s his life and diet!

However I feel really uncomfortable buying him eggs and meat when I go to the shops. Today it’s caused a bit of a row as I popped into our veg shop to stock up on veg and he asked me to pick up milk and eggs. I said I didn’t really want to buy them 🤦‍♀️

He’ll eat it what he wants of course but I don’t want to buy things associated with animal suffering really 🤷🏼‍♀️

OP posts:

“So what would happen if DP decided he didn't want to buy/eat highly-processed, chemical-laden stuff?” Then I guess he won’t be eating highly processed, antibiotic laden meat either 😂

nocoolnamesleft · 05/03/2022 20:00

Does anyone else find that threads like this test their resolution to eat less meat, and actually push them to be more carnivorous?

girlmom21 · 05/03/2022 20:02

@Mydogmylife because it's just bloody rude to order a takeaway when someone's made you dinner.

If you fancy a burger you ask what they're making beforehand then say "oh don't worry about doing me anything, I fancy x so I'll sort myself out"

100% yes. Though rationally it shouldn't but subconsciously it does. Grow up OP

“Animal Suffering”

You do realise the amount animal suffering involved in creating vegan products?

Allll the jokes

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 05/03/2022 20:03

And I reckon that DH is happy to eat highly processed, chemical laden stuff as long it contains meat 😀

MorningStarling · 05/03/2022 20:04

I think if you would expect him to buy you vegan food when he's going to the shops then you should be willing to buy non-vegan food for him.

Also by refusing to buy them you're effectively forcing there to be two trips to the shops instead of one. Even if you walk there, this is a waste of energy. It's a lot worse if you drive there or take a bus of course.

I can’t honestly distinguish between eating a dog or a cow.

You've tried both? Dog is pretty different to cow tbh.

Ladywinesalot · 05/03/2022 20:05

@elbea

YABU. Everything you eat an animal has suffered for. Every, single thing unless you’ve grown it yourself.

Thousands of animals are chopped up by combines, same for birds being shot to keep them off crops, rabbits, foxes etc… Billons of insects are dying. Millions of bees in particular if you are eating any sort of almonds.

Animals are used to increase soil health of fresh produce, their manure is used as fertiliser. Crops are fertilised with ground up fish bones and blood, especially if you are eating organic.

Surely nobody is that naive?

All of this^

And ppl are not naive, just stupid

Nope. Makes me cringe and people who are so defensive about meat eating though.
KidneyBeans · 05/03/2022 20:05

@RoomOfRequirement

I think you need to grow up honestly. Especially with your passive aggressive 'animal suffering!!' that you just must get in there, as you all do. If I were your husband I wouldn't be staying married long
What is 'passive aggressive' about recognising that animal production is associated with significant suffering?Confused There's a lot of defensiveness on this thread
AWavyLine · 05/03/2022 20:06

@Mydogmylife She didn’t say he didn’t like it, just that he didn’t fancy it. I think it’s really rude to order a takeaway when someone has cooked you a meal, nothing to do with vegan or not.

Thatsplentyjack · 05/03/2022 20:07

I'm not vegan or vegetarian and I would completely understand your point there OP.

Mydogmylife · 05/03/2022 20:07

Or alternatively you tell your partner what you're cooking first. Obviously what came first, a chicken or egg situation -or not in this case !

LifeWithBellsOn · 05/03/2022 20:08

Nope. Sorry, you are in a partnership and that involves compromise. I'm vegan, DH is a meat-eater. Although he eats very little meat and is a de facto vegetarian 5-6 days a week it's not up to me to tell him what he can or can't eat and quite frankly refusing to pick up a few food items for him would be ridiculous IMHO. Besides, how is two shopping trips better than one in this case?

Carpy899 · 05/03/2022 20:08

Majority of crops grown world wide are fed to live stock so if you do care about crop deaths its another reason to vegan.

Nobody has ever claimed veganism eliminates all animal suffering either but it's a damn sight less than actually consuming their flesh and the secretions they produce.

donquixotedelamancha · 05/03/2022 20:09

but why would that annoy you? He cooked chicken fajitas earlier in the week as his choice of meal. I obviously didn’t eat it but just had the veg and wrap!

I have one of those weird relationships where we speak to each other and plan together. Changing one element is fine but we wouldn't ignore the other's needs.

However if he would have eaten it but just fancied something different then that is entirely another matter.

Londoncallingtothefarawaytowns · 05/03/2022 20:10

DM has been non meat products since the 80s and has cooked many a chicken thigh on the bone for me!
She never told me what to eat or what to think even as a kid. We both find it amazing that people do ! Shock

@Pedalpushers is right. Unless you plan on leaving him, it doesn’t matter who is buying it.

If anything : you’re behaviour is likely to put him off ever cutting down or ditching meat products- as so many over zealous vegans do - manage to completely alienate their target audience !
*speaking from a chill veggie.
If he asking you to COOK it , I mayve had an understanding?

mummykel16 · 05/03/2022 20:10

Many vegans real food for their families with no issues whatsoever

Selma22 · 05/03/2022 20:10

Yep...sometimes its like reading daily mail comments on here.If there is an article about anything vegetarian or veganism related then there is a comment section full of comments like 'bacon!' 'I will go and have a sausage for them too' etc.

KidneyBeans · 05/03/2022 20:11

@GTAlogic

Soya production is directly and indirectly causing deforestation in the Amazon rainforest leading to loss of habitat and therefore suffering for plants and animals on a massive scale. For that reason, yabu to avoid buying a few eggs.
So is deforestation for beef production. Plus the majority of soy production is used for livestock feed not vegan alternatives - how much soy do you think vegans consume? Confused

So it's primarily meat eaters consuming soy-fed cattle that are devastating the rainforests @GTAlogic

Dog is closer to lamb than beef but if it was ground meat in something spicy I'm not sure I could tell.

This is soy for animal feed. Soy for human consumption accounts for a tiny proportion of soy farmed in South America
KylieKoKo · 05/03/2022 20:12

I would never expect a vegan to cook or buy animal products for me. The ops husband is an adult and can go to the shop and cook his own food if he wants animal products. Why is it up to the op to facilitate her husband to do something she finds morally wrong when he could easily sort himself out?

ineedsun · 05/03/2022 20:13

I’m vegan, the rest of the family aren’t. I’ll buy and cook meat for them. I don’t have any right to force my choices on them.

The extremes on each side of the debate are daft.
