How much do you spend on beauty treatments?

Not an AIBU but I’m curious. How much do you ladies spend on beauty products a year? Including makeup, skincare, hair cuts/products, beauty treatments like facials, nails, waxing, Botox etc.

OP posts:
Grapewrath · 05/03/2022 12:34

I have hair at £50 every 3 months. Probably spend about £100 per year on make up and £150 on skin care.
I have Botox but normal get a student slot so it’s cheap.
I love the idea of facials but they always make my skin break out

scarpa · 05/03/2022 12:37

Skincare stuff, maybe £20-30 every couple of months (thankfully my skin likes e.g. The Ordinary which is cheap).

Make up, maybe £150~ a year. Most of that is my Clinique foundation, the rest is reasonably cheap Elf or Revolution stuff.

Hair I get done maybe twice a year, so £150.

I do gel nails myself at home, or my sister does them at her salon. I wax my own eyebrows (I've had the same box of wax strips for about 3 years so it's cost me about £4 for that entire time) and have a Lumea for my legs and bikini line.

Very occasionally I'll get a curly blow or lash extensions for a work ball but not often enough to include in the total!

So... £400ish? It's probably more with occasionally getting face or hair masks to do at home, shampoo/conditioner/body oil etc but not sure exactly how much.

Spidey66 · 05/03/2022 12:39

I'd say I'm fairly low maintenance. I have my hair cut and highlighted every 3 months for about £100
I tend to use cheaper but not cheapest) shampoos/conditioner/body lotion/shower gel eg nivea, dove, pantene etc. I do use Amariage perfume, I usually pay for it with Boots Advantage points but it's about £50-55 for 100mls lasts about 7 months.
Skincare and make up I usually use no 7, mainly cos my mum always did! So cleanser, sometimes (not always!) toner, moisturiser, foundation, blusher, lippy, mascara and brow make up. I don't wear make up every day, but do for work or going out eg to the pub, if I'm just nipping to the shops or dog walking I don't.

I don't bother with treatments unless it's a special treat eg at a spa hotel and I may have a facial which I like but it's not anything regular. I've never had my nails done!

No idea what total spends is. Not the cheapest but certainly not the dearest. My main indulgence is having my hair cut and coloured but I don't visit the hairdressers between times unless there's a special event and I want I good blow dry as I'm not very good. But that's rare!

freshcarnation · 05/03/2022 12:42

I'm not adding it up. Dye my own hair. Cuts every 3 months @ £60. Makeup minimal. Dermalogica skin care stuff. Probably £400 a year? Plus facials and peels every couple of months.

bellsbuss · 05/03/2022 12:48

Nails £25 every 3 weeks, feet £30 every 6 weeks, facial £70 every 4 weeks. Hair £80 every 8 weeks.

ohhooh · 05/03/2022 12:53

This will be terrifying;

Hair - every two months, £150 a pop so £900 per year
Beauty products - probably £150 a month (big on my skin care, hair care and anything I can get my hands on 😂)
Nails - £40 every three weeks so £700 ish a year?
Botox - £150 every three months but should get less

That's already £4k 😱 I'm shocked. I've never actually added it up before. Things like shampoo and conditioner (olaplex or redken) are £50 a set which is probably pushing the numbers up!

ohhooh · 05/03/2022 12:54

Oh my god - just thought if I include makeup and perfume too I'll be way over £4K 😂 😂 holy hell. I've never thought about it all together like that.

JanisMoplin · 05/03/2022 13:40

Finding this thread quite fascinating. Maybe I should stop being so tight and buy a MAC lipstick instead of Maybelline or Rimmel.

RosesAndHellebores · 05/03/2022 13:47

It would probably be more realistic if everyone put the percentage expenditure against their net income.

I'm still in shock that it adds up to more than £2k. However, most of that is on my hair and my hairdresser puts through two or three colours through foils and fills in the gaps at the front where I'm now almost white. It's worth every penny as the white at the front graduates to natural rodent at the back. I much prefer the light ashy blonde/brown she achieves.

I think I spend about the same, possibly slightly more on clothes/shoes/bags. But I work full-time, at nearly 62 and have no shame.

Minfilia · 05/03/2022 13:51

Probably close to 3k which is fairly terrifying!

Tan - £10/week
Nails £20/2 weeks
Hair extensions and maintenance £1,000 a year
Hair cut/dye £100/8 weeks
Make up about £20 a month
Face products £45/month
Dental hygienist (I have veneers to keep clean) twice a year £120

I get lashes/brows done every few months if I have specific occasions

I’ll probably add Botox to the list too Blush

I work in a pretty glamorous industry where this is the norm though.

BuddhaForMary · 05/03/2022 13:52

I just know I'm going to be the odd one out here!!

About £100 a year I guess, maybe a bit less. I'm not high maintenance and I'm always hands on because it's just me and DC. I don't dye my hair or get it cut, it's naturally black, very long and all the same length but I've become good at trimming my own ends over the years so don't need a salon to do that for me. Don't get my nails, eyebrows or eyelashes done. Once again these are things I've learned to do myself to a pretty decent standard. Couldn't be doing with nails like talons anyway. I prefer a more natural look. Ask too impractical with my day to day life. So that leaves make up and skincare. I like ELF cosmetics because they're good quality but affordable. I use Lidl Q10 moisturiser, and I favour St Ives apricot facial scrub and cold water over cleansers and what not.

FluffyBooBoo · 05/03/2022 14:11

*I just know I'm going to be the odd one out here!!

About £100 a year I guess*

I'm guessing you haven't read any of the comments. You might be in a minority, but you aren't alone.

BuddhaForMary · 05/03/2022 14:14

@FluffyBooBoo I skimmed over the last few and they all seemed to be quite high spends! I haven't had chance to read through them all properly yet.

Spidey66 · 05/03/2022 14:56

Oh and I rarely shave…. Not because I’m a smelly minger but the majority of my body hair fell out about 10 years back and didn’t grow back. No idea why. I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid a few years ago and thought that was the reason but thyroxine hasn’t helped. Doesn’t bother me except my eyebrows and lashes are very sparse. So I’ve not shoved my legs for years though to look at them yesterday I’d think they were shaved this morning and I shave my armpits every couple of months but the hair growth for that period would be like a week’s worth for most people!

Spidey66 · 05/03/2022 14:56

Shoved my legs? Shaved them, but I’ve never shoved them either.

Blossomtoes · 05/03/2022 15:02
@User76745333 do you use older makeup products? I thought that all makeup items only lasted a year tops?
I find they go on for ever. Some of my lipsticks are seven or eight years old and absolutely fine. The only thing I religiously replace every three to four months is mascara.

CounsellorTroi · 05/03/2022 15:03

I have an underactive thyroid too. Half my pubes fell out and I have a bald patch. I only need to shave my legs and pits once a month. My eye brows were affected in as much as they are no longer threatening to join up into a monobrow, though they are still thick.

GarlandsinGreece · 05/03/2022 15:03

An absolute fortune.

I get Botox three times a year, filler once a year, hydra facial once a month, pedicure once a month, hair color every three weeks, keratin for hair twice a year, cryo therapy 4 x a week. I like Augustinus Bader for skincare. I don’t really wear makeup—mascara on the daily, and I’ll add in lipstick if I go out.

CounsellorTroi · 05/03/2022 15:09

Augustinius Bader

You know when someone mentions a brand you’ve never heard of it’s going to be eyewateringly expensive!

2anddone · 05/03/2022 15:13

Not even £100 year. I only wear mascara and lip gloss, both Rimmel or Maybeline do not expensive. I don't get my hair cut or nails done or any body part waxed. I buy shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and deodorant from home bargains (simple brand and Nivea) and a bottle of perfume lasts me from when I am gifted one at Christmas to at least my birthday in summer of not longer.
I would love to spend ££ on making myself look and feel better but it's Saturday afternoon and I am currently wrapped up in blankets in bed trying to keep warm as I can't afford to put my heating on so at the moment it's not top of my priorities unfortunately.

Fairislefandango · 05/03/2022 15:14

Hmmm... don't know,as I don't keep track of what I do spend. But not much - I buy Aldi skin care, high street brands of make-up (bought rarely). Hair cut about 4 times a year £35. Highlights occasionally. Never have any kind of treatments (nails, waxing facials etc) and would definitely never have Botox, fillers etc. So I'm pretty low maintenance.

MrsBerthaRochester · 05/03/2022 15:19

Makeup probably a couple of hundred a year as I have an obsession with red lipsticks.
Hair is a box dye every 8 weeks which costs £8.
Havent had my nails or eyebrows done since covid.
Never had a facial/massage etc. Doesnt appeal.
I love perfume and spend about £300 a year on that.

WellTidy · 05/03/2022 15:21

Brows £8 every six weeks
Hair £150 every 10 or so weeks (half or whole head foils, cut and blow dry)

Don’t have salon treatments like fillers, Botox, facials etc

Never have nails done

Everything else is skincare (Estée Lauder pretty much everything - cleanser, idealist, advanced night repair and day wear) and make-up (mix of Benefit, Estée Lauder and Clinique) so I’d imagine on average maybe £30 a month on average?

Massive stash of body lotions, washes and scubs so working through those, but most of these have been gifts in the past so I don’t spend anything really on them Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 05/03/2022 15:24

Hair £1200
Botox £700
Massages £1600

= £2500 a year

(Really wishing I'd not counted BlushGrin)

70kid · 05/03/2022 15:27

Hair £50 a month £600 a year
Eyelashes / eyebrows £100 a month - subscription so can go as many times as I want £1200 a year
Botox and lip fillers 225 x 3 times - £775 a year
General make up lotions creams £200 -300 a year
Nails and pedicure £100 a month £1200 a year
That’s around 4K
