Sick of all the war threads

dollymuchymuchness · 01/03/2022 14:31

I know I don't have to read them but even the titles are a bit much. I know what's going on, I don't want to keep reading thread titles such as:

Diane Abbot thinks Russian Tanks are r...

The Invasion continues

Would you even want to survive a nucl...

DP won't let the kids leave the house beca...

All in active right now.

Is it just me who doesn't want to be continually reminded? Perhaps I'll have to stop coming on here.

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation

People running around with their fingers in their ears shouting lalala isn't going to make this potentially dangerous situation go away.

Many of the threads are informative, or are helping people process their thoughts and feelings regarding this situation.

...and many of the threads are pure fucking insanity.

Yes, we can hide them - not because we are sensitive, triggered individuals who don't care about what is going on in the world and haveour fingers in our ears shouting la-la-la, but because many of the threads are spouting insane, uninformed nonsense and it is truly depressing to realise how many people live their lives unable to fact-check, use an atlas or independently verify anything at all.

Yes, there are some informative and measured threads, but the "sobbing and shaking" brigade will lap up any old shite and it is just cruel to further fuel their delusions with the sort of utter tripe that is being passed off as "fact".

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 01/03/2022 18:34

Or perhaps a 'Canute's Corner' for those wishing to avoid uncomfortable realities?

I know there's a war, thanks. I saw how the last ones played out, both hot and cold, and I'm very aware of the potential ramifications.

I'm just not sure what I'm expected personally to do about it. Share a Facebook filter with a sad face and a Ukrainian flag? Shout 'I stand with Ukraine!', or hand-wring about I'm supposed to tell the DC? Start stockpiling a bunker?

Fat lot of good any of that'll do. More of the same old purity-spiralling bull will achieve sweet doodly, unless it's to share with a bunch of anonymous fonts what a concerned citizen we are. Still, it'll give the 'You're killing Granny' brigade something new to catastrophise about ...

^^Very well said @Parpophone

Without sounding rude your post sounds very privileged.

*Is it just me who just doesn't want to be continually reminded?

I wonder if they thought like this in 1939?
This needs discussing this needs to be talked about by ALL of us. Not discussing won't make it go away.[/quote]
You do sound rude actually.

The problem on here, which you seem to be overlooking, is all the scaremongering nutcase threads. I don't want to discuss with strangers on the internet about how I feel about getting nuked. Do you?

Roselilly36 · 01/03/2022 18:53

I can empathise, people have gone from the fear of Covid to the fear of a possible nuclear war. People are free to post & debate on any subject matter, they see fit in a free society surely.

Crankley · 01/03/2022 18:53

Oh poor you. I'm sure the people in the Ukraine would agree but they are a tad busy being bombed with hundreds dead, including children. Hmm

SFS

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 01/03/2022 19:02

People DO come to MN to help their anxiety, just as they come to ask advice about things, bitch about their neighbours or ask people if they might be pregnant...it's all part of the same thing. People being people. People coming to distract themselves or find answers. MN is many things to many people. To think otherwise is ridiculous.

I have little patience for those who can't understand that and even less for the PP who took the opportunity to make a disablist comment about so many people getting diagnosed with ASD and ADHD. It's not for fun you know!!

AgathaAllAlong · 01/03/2022 19:10

People want to discuss this because it's one of the biggest events of the decade if not people's lifetimes (depending on age). Normal, no? Look how many threads we get about Christmas and that happens every year.

ThanksItHasPockets · 01/03/2022 19:14

@Theluggage15

It’s not a therapy website ffs.
Unfortunately it is, but not in a good way. Currently MN is much as it was in spring 2020, full of incredibly anxious posters engaged in collective acts of mental self-harm, dragging each other down with doom and fear. I’m very very lucky to have enjoyed robust mental health in my life so far and the overall tone really makes me feel panicky. God knows the impact it has on the clinically anxious.

Time to hide AIBU again.

EffOrfagain · 01/03/2022 19:21

All fine and well actually discussing the war, it's the umpteen threads about 'I'm terrified' 'building a bunker' which are really more about the poster than the actual war

DrSbaitso · 01/03/2022 19:21

People DO come to MN to help their anxiety

Well they really shouldn't! It's like going to Haagen Dasz to try to lose weight!

DustyMaiden · 01/03/2022 19:24

I’m sick of. Brexit
Covid
War
What’s next?

Theluggage15 · 01/03/2022 19:33

I’m amazed at all the people being forced to read threads!! How terrible.

SilverGlassHare · 01/03/2022 19:35

@Libertybear80

I'm sick of people writing threads like ' what is this I've found in my bed' , 'who do you think is the best looking celebrity'

The situation in Ukraine makes these sorts of threads look vacuous.

What had she found in her bed, btw? The thread got deleted because ‘the mystery was solved’.
Hadjab · 01/03/2022 19:42

@StepAwayFromGoogling

Can't we have a separate section though?! *@Libertybear80* - I appreciate you are clearly the intellectual superior of us all but 'what is this in my bed' threads are much more in the spirit of AIBU that 'WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!' It's exactly the light relief that a lot of us need at the moment.
Given the fact that we are all actually going to die one day, surely they are just as much in the spirit of AIBU than ''What is this in my bed," particularly as most people are (luckiy/unluckily)) less likely to find a random something in their bed?
Liamgallaghersparka · 01/03/2022 19:54

@MrsTerryPratchett I'm well aware there are knowledgeable and well informed mumsnetters who are running a series of threads on this subject right now, what I was referring to were the ones who come on spouting scaremongering crap without even researching it first, and the ones who enjoy putting the boot into those who come on here for a bit of reassurance in some form or other when their mental health is on the floor.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/03/2022 20:09

But the OP didn't ask to hide the weird nuclear bunker threads. She asked about the war threads. Which would include the well-informed ones.

7eleven · 01/03/2022 20:26

@Easterbunnyiswindowshopping

Just heard my ds is being deployed to help with immigrants. Feel sick.
Feel for you. Stay strong x
newardrobe · 01/03/2022 20:31

@DrSbaitso

People DO come to MN to help their anxiety

Well they really shouldn't! It's like going to Haagen Dasz to try to lose weight!

I've found a lot of comments in some of the threads reassuring

Kumbaya12 · 01/03/2022 20:36

@ThanksItHasPockets I don't knwo if it's just me, but MN has become a shell of its former self.
Used to be full of support, wisdom, good chat and people lifting each other up.

Now it's just a giant echo chamber of extreme emotion. Every post is either kicking the OP, or someone being anxious or over-exaggerating.I've become a worse person since MN, and I'm starting to notice it.

This post is probably somewhat ironic as other people might take it as me doing the same thing... but farewell MN. You have been good to me, maybe I'll be back one day.

I remember once reading a thread from a vulnerable OP who said that she posted emotive threads on AIBU as a form of self harm. She knew that there would reliably be a queue of people lining up to lay into her and confirm all of her darkest thoughts about herself. It was one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 01/03/2022 20:41

Should we just be having the childish 'I've found a scary spider in my bathroom' type discussions? Nothing is more over emotional and ridiculous than those.

'My bf is having an affair with next door's cat, I'm sobbing and shaking, please help me' Hmm

Equalbutdifferent · 01/03/2022 20:55

If you don't want too discuss the most serious international crisis since WWII then don't click; it's fine to stay in your personal comfort zone.

But please don't expect the rest of us to suspend reality, or to censor our conversations.

Littlepaws18 · 01/03/2022 21:08

This is one of the worst threads I have read in here. Sadly shows how we are becoming an inherently selfish society not willing to read or want to discuss or even acknowledge when others in our world are being killed in the most indescribable ways.

Apathy is the most dangerous concept of the 21st century. And the reason despots like Putin get away with crimes against humanity. In fact his whole battle plan was based on the west not giving a damn!

Libraryghost · 01/03/2022 21:20

Don't read them then. What's up with people? This is THE major event of our lifetime, of course people want to discuss it. You don't have to participate. Talk about precious! What would you like to discuss..?
