Sick of all the war threads

dollymuchymuchness · 01/03/2022 14:31

I know I don't have to read them but even the titles are a bit much. I know what's going on, I don't want to keep reading thread titles such as:

Diane Abbot thinks Russian Tanks are r...

The Invasion continues

Would you even want to survive a nucl...

DP won't let the kids leave the house beca...

All in active right now.

Is it just me who doesn't want to be continually reminded? Perhaps I'll have to stop coming on here.

Covid's been two years. Brexit longer.

Can we not give Ukraine a week before we hide it away and try to forget?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 01/03/2022 15:44

Perhaps I'll have to stop coming on here.

Yes, that's your solution.

Sorted.

Jojoanna · 01/03/2022 15:46

Just hide the thread(s)

DrSbaitso · 01/03/2022 15:48

@MrsTerryPratchett

Yes, I'd be up for a Fluffball board. But at the moment, we're talking about a Russia-Ukraine War board, because we don't have one of those but we do have a lot of threads on the subject.

It's been less than a week! FFS I get Brexit and covid topics but this is very very current. We don't even know what the topic would be called:

Russia-Ukraine
War in Europe
Yay Zelenskyy won (one can hope)

I know how long it's been. What's that got to do with it?

It's a specific topic that's understandably generating a lot of debate. Giving it a dedicated space seems a reasonable idea to consider. I wonder if the catastrophisers would even be less inclined to add fuel to the fire if they could see a long uninterrupted line to show how many times this same question is already being discussed.

I'm sure that if the only thing stopping it is deciding on a name, MNHQ can come up with one.

Elphame · 01/03/2022 15:52

@Brefugee

A separate board specifically for them would be a good idea.

the idea of a fluffy board with only fluffy topics isn't a bad idea. Isn't there anything like that already? The ability to be able to hid the "trending now" box may also help?

I have the trending box blocked out :)
Libertybear80 · 01/03/2022 15:55

Sorry war isn't fluffy enough for you. The Russians are about to wipe out the capital so maybe once they annihilate the civilians there you can move on to something else! Ffs!

DrSbaitso · 01/03/2022 15:56

@MrsTerryPratchett

Most of these threads, and their content, are nothing to do with Ukrainians and how to assist or what it means for them. They are just variants of "I'm scared we're going to be nuked in the UK".

A dedicated space wouldn't be hiding anything; it would be a dedicated space.

dollymuchymuchness · 01/03/2022 16:06
@dollymuchymuchness imagine how the Ukrainians feel?
Yes I can, to some extent. Sorry what's your point?

we can quibble but AIBU may be too robust for a lot of posters anyway.

I'm quite sure someone at Mumsnet will decide when the critical mass of Ukraine threads has reached the "needs own section" and there it will be. Or not.

I'm another one who doesn't have a - sign next to threads to hide them. The only way to hide a thread (MS Edge) is to open the OP and then hide it.

I have the trending box blocked out
i didn't know you could do that. Cool. (how - i don't apparently have that superpower)
Ah wait. Are the thread hiding and trending box blocking abilities only for the premium users? (is that still a thing, i was AWOL for a while)

As if endlessly posting and reading about it, is actually helping anything! Hmm

@Cheekypeach

Sorry if the whole thing is just a big bore to you OP 🙄
I didn't say that. Does posting that snarky remark make you feel better? Hmm

@dollymuchymuchness I don't know about what helps you. Probably denial but I think it helps me

Personally I am sick *
Mumofsend · 01/03/2022 16:15

It's been quite helpful, I now know I'd rather die than try and survive a nuclear all out war. That would have not been my thought a week ago.

And a couple of threads have been really informative re how it all works.

As long as it doesn't slip into hysteria it'd fine by me

hellcatspangle · 01/03/2022 16:16

I'm hiding them all!

Theluggage15 · 01/03/2022 16:17

Sorry you’re struggling with hiding threads, must be such a trial for you.

Northernsoullover · 01/03/2022 16:18

I lived through the cold war and barely coped with the anxiety. If there was a war topic I could hide it. It doesn't mean I don't want to know what's going on or pretend it isn't happening but it wouldn't be in my line of vision when I am trying to keep calm.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/03/2022 16:25

As if endlessly posting and reading about it, is actually helping anything!

It's helped me know who to donate to, what is actually happening so who to write to in order to do what is possible to put pressure on as a tiny cog in the wheel. Where to protest, and a bit of what the false information is.

The women on the 'invasion' threads are very interesting about the history and geopolitics. Which helps with context. NATO, EU, spheres of influence, treaties, even Michael Portillo talking about Vikings!

I had encyclopaedic knowledge of Central American interventionism by the US decades ago. It gives context to things like the Bushes.

If that annoys you, hide it.

AllTheWeetabix · 01/03/2022 16:30

I come on mumsnet to escape my anxiety and all these war threads are making it fucking worse! Just shut the fuck up!

ManicPixie · 01/03/2022 16:32

Get over yourself. The forum moves a mile a minute and it’s very easy to ignore threads that don’t interest you. In fact it’d be insane to read every single one.

you need to find a more niche forum if you're looking for something to soothe anxiety.
Theluggage15 · 01/03/2022 16:41

It’s not a therapy website ffs.

GirlInACountrySong · 01/03/2022 16:46

I agree

Was sick of tip toeing round everyone's anxieties during covid. Both here AND In RL
