Sick of all the war threads

dollymuchymuchness · 01/03/2022 14:31

I know I don't have to read them but even the titles are a bit much. I know what's going on, I don't want to keep reading thread titles such as:

Diane Abbot thinks Russian Tanks are r...

The Invasion continues

Would you even want to survive a nucl...

DP won't let the kids leave the house beca...

All in active right now.

Is it just me who doesn't want to be continually reminded? Perhaps I'll have to stop coming on here.

OP posts:

@Brefugee

A separate board specifically for them would be a good idea.

the idea of a fluffy board with only fluffy topics isn't a bad idea. Isn't there anything like that already? The ability to be able to hid the "trending now" box may also help?

Yes, I'd be up for a Fluffball board. But at the moment, we're talking about a Russia-Ukraine War board, because we don't have one of those but we do have a lot of threads on the subject.
UKRAINEwearewithyou · 01/03/2022 15:15

The war won't end because you are sick of threads on MN.

Ignore the threads as you can with any other threads eg covid.

People are interested and worried. You can look the other way or do what you want.

I personally wish the threads saying there are too many threads about X or Y seem a bit Hmm just don't read it since it doesn't interest you.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/03/2022 15:15

It's been less than a week! FFS I get Brexit and covid topics but this is very very current. We don't even know what the topic would be called:

Russia-Ukraine
War in Europe
Yay Zelenskyy won (one can hope)

Pissyduck · 01/03/2022 15:15

Why can't people just take responsibility for themselves rather than expecting others to!

I get anxious, which is why I've chosen to update myself on what's going on by looking at either BBC news or the guardian. Getting news via social media is a recipe for anxiety. I don't think people should be stopped from making threads and discussing it though, and it probably helps some people to talk through their fears.

Also if you genuinely feel hard done by because you saw a thread you didn't like, get some bloody perspective /off mumsnet

Lesperance · 01/03/2022 15:16

Sick people saying they are sick on war threads.

Liamgallaghersparka · 01/03/2022 15:17

The thing is, most of the people posting these threads come on here catastrophising rather than getting their news from reliable non hysterical sources.
Yes, current affairs are important and should be talked about but instead of posting these hysterical threads about nuclear apocalypse why not research / read up on the situation, its facts and discuss it properly?
I have to admit MN is the only place I've noticed this hysteria.
Sorry to all whose MH is suffering right now.

nearlyspringyay · 01/03/2022 15:17

It was Covid, now that's dropped off, we've got war. What the fuck is next?

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/03/2022 15:18

Actually there are very knowledgeable and informed MNers. You just have to pick your thread.
DrSbaitso · 01/03/2022 15:18

@Worldgonecrazy

Mumsnet is important enough to be targeted by shills. We saw it during covid ( waves at the Nudge Unit) and no doubt we are seeing some now by Russian shills seeking to demoralise and create fear. I am betting that the originating IP addresses of some posters would be quite interesting.
No, I really don't think they would be.
buffyajp · 01/03/2022 15:18

@Libertybear80

I'm sick of people writing threads like ' what is this I've found in my bed' , 'who do you think is the best looking celebrity'

The situation in Ukraine makes these sorts of threads look vacuous.

Rubbish. There is absolutely no need for umpteen threads all panicking about nuclear war. Some of us come here for some light hearted distraction and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Try considering the mental well being of others. I think there needs to be a separate forum for the invasion just like there is for Covid. It does not mean those of us who don’t wish to discuss don’t care, we just want some light relief.
the80sweregreat · 01/03/2022 15:18

Just hide them op ( and avoid the rolling news channels )
It's easy really.

Createakbit · 01/03/2022 15:20

Agree,I read them purely for entertainment.The hysteria is mind boggling.They are beyond ridiculous,Ukraine should indeed have its own sub-forum.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/03/2022 15:20

@nearlyspringyay

Bloody hell we've just been dealing with the Hundred Years War, now the bloody Black Death? FFS what's next? Oh yeah the Reconquista and the end of feudalism. Blimey!

That's human history for you.

Cheekypeach · 01/03/2022 15:20

You read threads about Ukraine for entertainment?

@Lesperance

Sick people saying they are sick on war threads. Check your privilege and scroll on by.
This.

She is also sick of Sainsbury and their customer service Grin. Perhaps some people feel the need to start a thread telling everyone else what they are sick of.

Privilege position indeed.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/03/2022 15:23

Try considering the mental well being of others.

I agree. The PTSD and trauma of moving your children out of a warzone leaving your DH behind must be... hold on, you didn't mean that.

I agree that anything with 'nuclear' in it is likely to be nonsense. Hide and move on.

BoodleBug51 · 01/03/2022 15:24

I think that MN has a significant amount of users with quite extreme anxiety, tbh, and I'm not always sure that posting on this forum benefits them when others are then "fanning the flames".

There was Brexit and prepping; then the pandemic; now the Ukraine.

It'll always be something, and I would be lying if I said it's a relief from the multiple "I'm ECV" posts that clog up the forum. And I use MN for some relief from life............ so am trying to avoid the bun fights.

Pissyduck · 01/03/2022 15:25

I wonder if it would be a good idea for mumsnet to post on any topics discussing the war a blurb along the lines of "mumsnet is a discussion forum not a news site, for accurate coverage please visit a mainstream news website" like how they do on begging threads etc

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 01/03/2022 15:27

I can't quite understand why you think people aren't going to feel a need to discuss this. It's the biggest thing happening in the world at the moment.

Createakbit · 01/03/2022 15:29

@Cheekypeach,Yes I do,because they are utterly ridiculous.Whipping up hysteria.

I have lived through so many wars,was in the Army in the 1970’s,so used to horrific things happening around me.Have nursed bomb victims etc.etc.

Most of these threads are about Nuclear War.......it ain’t going to happen.Have yet to read anything remotely helpful yet on here.

I just hide the threads I don’t want to read,so this one is going right now.

Gowithme · 01/03/2022 15:32

Well having read on here about a husband who won't let his kids go to school because of it and two others where the husband is building a bomb shelter I think we can definitely put to bed the idea that it's women who are the hysterical catastrophisers. I agree with way too many threads going over the same things though.

gannett · 01/03/2022 15:35

So OP has an incredibly important need for light relief. I don't know why the fuck she thinks that's our problem, or why anyone should consider that a priority. Maybe she should compare her plight to that of the people fleeing missile strikes and the Russian army, and get some perspective.

Theluggage15 · 01/03/2022 15:36

The mental well being of others!!! When people are being killed and their country torn apart, people in the U.K. getting a bit upset reading a thread should be what we’re thinking about. Umm no. If it’s too much for you, don’t read it. Of course some people will be over the top but then they’ll be over the top about anything.

Personally I get sick of the ‘is it positive’ threads, pregnancy or covid.

EffOrfagain · 01/03/2022 15:37

At least the covid experts have diminished, they are all effing war experts now

gogohm · 01/03/2022 15:40

For many people, posting on here allows them the process thoughts on serious topics like the Ukraine situation. Thinking out loud basically.

I think it's important to discuss serious issues but I do understand it can cause anxiety so a separate topic (like In the News) does make sense, it worked mostly for covid.
