What the hell was Liz Truss thinking!!?

So yesterday in a few interviews Liz Truss said she would support people going to fight in Ukraine. I couldn't believe it when i was watching her saying it, knowing Putins threats. This morning i've heard that apparently Putin has said that her comments are the reason he put his nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. So now it feels like if he was to attack any other country it would be the UK as he would use her comments as an excuse by saying the UK is threatening his country and people by letting people go and fight against the Russian army. Honestly how could she be that stupid!!

It's fucking depressing that there are grown women on this thread saying Truss needs to apologise to Putin. Are you mad? Should Churchill have apologised to Hitler? Putin is mad - if he launches nuclear weapons it's on him not because some woman upset him. Show some fucking backbone and stop being so pathetic.

Threatening to use nuclear weapons in response was a tad disproportionate though, no?

No of course not. Obviously if Putin deployed his nukes, that would not be her' fault.

But it is equally obvious that this sort of ham-fisted, ill-thought out comment would be spun against her. Putin wants to sow discord among allies. (See also: Brexit.)

She is incompetent and appears to be incapable of thinking on her feet with any level of nuance or skill.

I don't think it's right to call those who think Truss was stupid to say what she did 'Putin supporters'.

There's a world of a difference between supporting what Putin is doing, and thinking that noone should be inflaming the situation further, by directly encouraging untrained people to input themselves into a war situation.

When asked that question, she could have simply responded along the lines of "We don't encourage any UK residents to enter either Russia or Ukraine at risk time".

I’m no fan of Liz Truss or the current government, but Putin’s administration is playing Britons for fools by saying this - surely we can see that? They know our government is in thin ice with voters already so they can chuck this kind of statement out and undermine us all even more.

Oh come on! Does anyone seriously believe that Putin is thinking, 'well, I wasn't going to use nuclear weapons but now that Liz Truss has said something a bit off, I will!'

He's using this as a way to evade responsibility for his own war-mongering choices. If you buy into it ' all being Liz's fault' you are entering into the mad inner psyche of Putin.

I'm pretty sure no one thinks that, i do however think her saying that has given Putin the excuse he possibly wanted to send more threats of a nuclear attack and possibly an excuse to make the UK a target country or at least scare us. Also to people saying about this being a woman thing or comparing it in some way to DV that's absolute rubbish. I don't care if a man or woman said it and who that man or woman is, i didn't want anyone to go on tv and say that! This morning when i watched the news it was very worrying, i just wanted others opinions on what she said. Just to reiterate for those who may not understand, I DO NOT think Putin is sat in Russia fuming at Liz Truss. I thought it wasn't a clever move for her going on tv saying she supported people from the UK going to fight in Russia if they so wish to. In MY opinion it's irresponsible to even suggest this is an acceptable thing for anyone to do.

When this all kicked off my first thought was he's either got a terminal disease or his girlfriend has chucked him. He's always been a tyrant, but this is the behaviour of someone who knows he is going down and wants to either create a legacy, reclaiming territory, or else take everyone down with him. He wouldn't give a monkeys about Liz Truss, who I accept is a right berk regardless.

According to Time he has terminal cancer and Parkinson's but I haven't seen proof. I guess he's not going to advertise it. If he starts showing signs of weakness, he's vulnerable to being picked off.

He really is grasping at straws if people believe it was a British woman’s comments that decided that he needed to reach for a nuke to protect himself.

She's not just any old British woman though is she. She's the fucking foreign secretary and she clearly can't think quickly enough to come up with a reasonable response when pushed by some journo. She is quite obviously not responsible for the actions of that madman but she could do us the courtesy of engaging her brain before she speaks when the stakes are so enormously bloody high.

Actually what his threat has done is make Russian oligarchs nervous. They're already suffering financially and statements like that are making him sound unhinged so they are now looking askance at him and many are calling for peace. It's also gee'ed up other countries to pile on more financial pressure. So everything is beginning to work against Putin. He's not sowing discontent, he's actually bringing the world together.

Exactly. As if she was the reason, that threat will have been there all along. People believing she is the reason are deluded.

If Putin really is terminally ill, I wish he’d just hurry up and die and stop ruining life for the rest of the world! Liz Truss is not to blame for his madness. If there’s a hell, I hope he’s going to the hottest circle of it.
