More of a WWYD than AIBU chicken in a vegan sandwich.

My lovely step mum is moving and the family have got together to move her today, my dad went to a local bakery to get everyone lunch, my husband is the only vegetarian and my dad got him a chickpea coronation sandwich after double checking with the assistant my dad spent over £50 in there, after a few mouthfuls my husband came across a large chunk of chicken looked in the sandwich and there was small bits of chicken in it, I contacted them through Facebook messenger they have read my message that says

My father came to you early this afternoon and bought lots of food for the family, the coronation chickpea sandwich however contained chicken after the vegetarian who was eating it found out it also contained no chickpeas.
We still have half left with the packaging, how would you like to move forward with this issue?
Regards

But obviously won't get a reply now until Monday at the earliest.
What else can I do?

Are you sure he didn’t misunderstand the ingredients? Coronation chicken sounds much more likely than coronation chickpea.

Nothing you can do either way if they’re closed until Monday.

Pumperthepumper · 26/02/2022 16:53

What else do you want to do? What outcome do you want? I’m not being sarcastic, it’s ridiculous they’re not more tightly controlled but I don’t know what they can do if he was eating it before he noticed.

tiredanddangerous · 26/02/2022 16:53

What exactly are you hoping to gain? An apology? I'm not sure why you can't wait until Monday for that tbh - it's hardly a life or death situation.

fluffiphlox · 26/02/2022 16:53

Sounds like someone misheard something somewhere. Chalk it up to experience.

whateveryousay · 26/02/2022 16:54

Coronation Chickpea is most definitely ‘a thing’.
I’d wait to see how they respond before deciding what to do next.

Hugasauras · 26/02/2022 16:55

Well it's not really time sensitive now, is it? So you'll just have to wait till Monday for a response and see if there was a misunderstanding or what happened.

NuffSaidSam · 26/02/2022 16:56

Wait until Monday, see what they say.

Assuming the mistake is theirs they should apologise and offer a refund. There's not much else they can do.

BlanketsBanned · 26/02/2022 16:56

I have never seen coronation chickpea, someone has got mixed up. What does it say on the packaging. I expect they will offer you a refund for that, do they have a phone number.

RichardsGear · 26/02/2022 16:57

"How would you move forward with this issue?" Bit OTT surely!

Presumably they'll offer an apology and a refund and your DH will get over the fact he unfortunately and inadvertently ate a bit of chicken. Shit happens.

mrsm43s · 26/02/2022 16:58

I would assume your Dad mixed up Coronation Chicken and Coronation Chickpea - honestly I've never heard of a Coronation Chickpea sandwich (and it's pretty unlikely that it would be vegan anyway as there's dairy in the sauce).

I would think, however that its likely the bakery will refund the cost of the offending sandwich as a goodwill gesture. This would be more than adequate in this circumstance.

Personally, I probably wouldn't have bothered to contact them about this, as it does seem more likely that its a simple misunderstanding/mis-hearing issue rather than deliberately missold item.

Chocomelon · 26/02/2022 16:58

What are you expecting?

FlipFlops4Me · 26/02/2022 16:59

As a vegan I'd be very upset to find I'd eaten chicken, given the sandwich was meant to be coronation chickpea. I'd complain but wouldn't expect a reply (not in this day and age). A large order, a flustered sales assistant - mistakes happen.

I'd know that I'd not chosen to eat flesh; it had been an innocent mistake so I'd not let it worry me. And mistakes happen to everyone including shop assistants.

milkysmum · 26/02/2022 16:59

I'm vegetarian. I once got chicken in a veggie wrap in a cafe. I told the cafe staff, they apologised, refunded, end of the matter.

@fluffiphlox Why should she? Why should she just accept such shit service/product quality? It’s hardly difficult to make a sandwich. I mean what if it had a case of allergies, etc? It’s just sloppy.

I think Op should receive an apology and be refunded/compensated a significant amount of the overall total paid to the shop.

DiddyHeck · 26/02/2022 17:00

But obviously won't get a reply now until Monday at the earliest.
What else can I do?

Spend between now and Monday dressed as a chicken, walking up and down outside the shop, making clucking noises?

Other than that, I can't think what else you can do.

Lockheart · 26/02/2022 17:00

Get your best compo face on for your local rag, OP.

Cakelover17 · 26/02/2022 17:00

Nothing else you can do, or need to do. Wait for hopefully a grovelling apology and hopefully refund for the sandwich. It’s clearly a mistake, horrible as it is for your husband, I’m not sure what else you are wanting to achieve.

BritWifeInUSA · 26/02/2022 17:02

What would you like them to do? The sandwich can’t be uneaten. They can’t rewind time. About all they can do is refund the cost of the sandwich. What are you keeping the rest for? Eat it or bin it - it’s a sandwich that possibly had chicken in (could it have maybe been Quorn pieces?), not evidence of a crime.

Stop being so dramatic over a sandwich and either a misunderstanding or a human error. No one died.

MichelleScarn · 26/02/2022 17:03

Is he vegan or vegetarian? In your dad's double checking did he say 'is this vegan?'

Could your dad have made a mistake and is covering himself?

MichelleScarn · 26/02/2022 17:03

Just if its vegan it would have to be the egg free mayo in the mix too.

6demandingchildren · 26/02/2022 17:03

My point being that this find of mistake can mil people who have severe allergies.
And their is a 5p difference between a coronation chicken sandwich and a chickpea coronation sandwich.
And time sensitive if they want the half of the sandwich back to maybe to see if we actually purchased it from them.

How is this relevant? Chicken isn’t vegetarian OR vegan!
Thesearmsofmine · 26/02/2022 17:04

It sounds like a simple mistake either from your dad or the person making the sandwich. If you have the packaging, what does it say? Or the receipt?
I would expect you’ll get a refund for that sandwich and a sorry.

Parpophone · 26/02/2022 17:05

Is your husband vegan or vegetarian?

Maybe your Dad was as unclear as you are?

nancy75 · 26/02/2022 17:06

Places that sell food are meant to be quite rigorous with their knowledge of ingredients due to allergies, I know it’s unlikely the ops husband is allergic to chicken but they should let her know they will be going over training with staff to ensure people are sold/given the right items to avoid someone buying something & having a serious allergic reaction.
Op I would be happy with an apology & assurance that all staff will be fully trained.
