More of a WWYD than AIBU chicken in a vegan sandwich.

My lovely step mum is moving and the family have got together to move her today, my dad went to a local bakery to get everyone lunch, my husband is the only vegetarian and my dad got him a chickpea coronation sandwich after double checking with the assistant my dad spent over £50 in there, after a few mouthfuls my husband came across a large chunk of chicken looked in the sandwich and there was small bits of chicken in it, I contacted them through Facebook messenger they have read my message that says

My father came to you early this afternoon and bought lots of food for the family, the coronation chickpea sandwich however contained chicken after the vegetarian who was eating it found out it also contained no chickpeas.
We still have half left with the packaging, how would you like to move forward with this issue?
Regards

But obviously won't get a reply now until Monday at the earliest.
What else can I do?

Isn't it cakelover? Thanks for the info 😉 I'd actually posted too soon re rhe mayo, but am glad you've informed me. 👍

6demandingchildren · 26/02/2022 17:09

We all double checked the ingredients after he realised, just a shame he didn't get to eat as he was actually looking forward to it as it was his favourite.

Well I’d expect a grovelling apology and a refund and maybe the offer of a free sandwich. I think non vegetarians/ vegans don’t understand what a big deal this could be for many vegetarians/ vegans. What if it had been a sandwich given to someone with a severe allergy? That said I’d be checking exactly what they told your dad it was. Very embarrassing if he’s misheard and you go in all guns blazing.

LuckySantangelo35 · 26/02/2022 17:09

@Parpophone

Lol! Neither a vegetarian nor a vegan is gonna want chicken in their sandwich are they

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/02/2022 17:09

I see how the reaction to an adult eating chicken as a vegetarian is Meh , what ever

Whereas in School Dinner threads if a vegan/vegetarian child accidently eats meat/poultry the responses are
How could this happen. Totally unnaceptable , The child is vegetarian , how difficult is it for the school to understand

Hopefully at worst a gripey stomach .
If you wanted you could freeze the sandwhich till Monday . ?

MichelleScarn · 26/02/2022 17:10

But it is labelled Corination Chickenpox, not chickpea?

Frazzled50yrold · 26/02/2022 17:11

As a vegan myself I'd be really upset by this. We pay premium rates for sandwiches and this just shouldn't happen. You've flagged it up and all you can do is await their response. I'd also be warning others through trip advisor etc.

MichelleScarn · 26/02/2022 17:11

Coronation ChicKENpea that is, can't imagine anyone wanting chickenpox sandwiches!

To be honest I doubt if it’s worse than chickpea!
CristinaYangismySpiritAnimal · 26/02/2022 17:13

Yeah the label even says chicken 🤷🏻‍♀️

EeeICouldRipATissue · 26/02/2022 17:13

Coronation chickpea is definitely a thing!
Not the same as coronation chicken.
There's all sorts of different vegan alternative sandwiches around now, if I saw a coronation chickpea one I'd assume it was vegan (obviously I'd double check the ingredients with staff though if not sure)
which sounds like your Dad did.
See what the staff say on Monday, someone has misunderstood somewhere, either your Dad or them.
Pretty shit if them, they should know what's in them especially due to allergies.
It's not that long ago that poor girl (sorry, forget her name) died after a Pret sandwich.

Dobedodo · 26/02/2022 17:13

I’ve had this a few times before. They never do anything except apologise. I’ve never even had a refund just a replacement sandwich

tiredanddangerous · 26/02/2022 17:14

It says chicken on the label Confused

WimpoleHat · 26/02/2022 17:14

I’m not sure what you’re expecting them to do? Presumably they will offer an apology and a refund as a gesture of goodwill. And that’s it.

OnlyAFleshWound · 26/02/2022 17:14

Wow, how will ever get over the disappointment. Tragic. Get some perspective
BritWifeInUSA · 26/02/2022 17:15

So you want a refund of the 5 pence difference between the chicken sandwich and the chickpea sandwich?

I’m sure your husband will survive this trauma.

HotWaterAndLemon · 26/02/2022 17:17

YANBU. Although are you sure it’s chicken and not a different ingredient? I’d maybe wait for them to review the contents before taking any further action.

It’s possible someone put a sandwich in the wrong box. Agree that’s a serious error for many reasons, allergies etc.

6demandingchildren · 26/02/2022 17:18

My husband has had it before and he says it's lovely as he loves chickpeas, we checked the ingredients and it's still the vegan version.
The mistake must of been with the person who made and packaged the sandwich. As my daughter had the chicken version and their was chicken in it and NO chickpeas, the food my dad got wasn't made to order he just went in and choose what was already made up if that is relevant at all

This stuff is quite important because people with allergies can die if given the wrong food. Shops have to be really careful not to get it wrong.
Accidentally eating meat if you are vegetarian is upsetting

Mooster62 · 26/02/2022 17:18

It actually says "chickenpea' so I would assume it has chicken in it. They might apologise for any misunderstanding but will probably say that the description says chicken.

Associatepeggy · 26/02/2022 17:19

I get that this is a problem from the allergy side of things.

But why do you want something doing before Monday? What else do you expect to do of its not open?

EeeICouldRipATissue · 26/02/2022 17:19

Sorry, cross posted with your ingredient list!
Yeah, that is really shit if there was chicken in there.
It says coronation chickenpea, it even says vegan mayonnaise.
Is he sure it was definitely chicken?
Sometimes vegan alternatives can be very realistic, and I say this as a meat eater!
Also don't know why people are being such arseholes in the comments, must be a bored weekend for some or something.

MichelleScarn · 26/02/2022 17:20

Does your daughter's label say coronation chicken or chickenpea?

OnlyAFleshWound · 26/02/2022 17:20

Well, you've posted photos with the business name clearly visible, so well done. Presume that was your real aim in starting this pointless thread.

misspercy · 26/02/2022 17:20

In your shoes, I'd like a refund of how much you paid for the chicken/chickenpox/chickpea sandwich plus compensation to the value of a sandwich in cash - either the average cost of a sandwich there, or somewhere else, if higher. The logic being in your situation, the wrong sandwich wasn't wanted, and you might have bought a replacement vegan sandwich from somewhere pricey like Pret.

I'd also want an apology, and assurances that the labelling issue would be looked into, to avoid a repeat.
