My lovely step mum is moving and the family have got together to move her today, my dad went to a local bakery to get everyone lunch, my husband is the only vegetarian and my dad got him a chickpea coronation sandwich after double checking with the assistant my dad spent over £50 in there, after a few mouthfuls my husband came across a large chunk of chicken looked in the sandwich and there was small bits of chicken in it, I contacted them through Facebook messenger they have read my message that says

My father came to you early this afternoon and bought lots of food for the family, the coronation chickpea sandwich however contained chicken after the vegetarian who was eating it found out it also contained no chickpeas.
We still have half left with the packaging, how would you like to move forward with this issue?
Regards

But obviously won't get a reply now until Monday at the earliest.
What else can I do?

That's so bad!

MangoBiscuit · 28/02/2022 16:42

They did what?!? Omg that's bad! Sheer dumb luck that they haven't made some really ill.

EeeICouldRipATissue · 28/02/2022 16:42

Ok after this message I posted on here I contacted them again to let them know and I'm gobsmacked. Apparently the had no coronation chickenpea so they made a coronation chicken and placed the vegan label on it !!!

Ok, if true that's disgusting and they need reporting, somebody with an allergy could be seriously ill or worse next time.

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2022 17:02

That is awful = they should just have said they didnt have any

Definitely complain and take further

Ye Gods, that's appalling.

If it is normal practice for them to do that sort of thing with their fillings, then they could include an allergen in an allergen-free product and potentially kill someone.

Yes. After their pathetic excuse please do report to Trading Standards. Screen shot and include their excuse. And it may be worth putting reviews down on online sites like TripAdvisor, with the same screen shot.

@CrocodilesCry

Are you sure he didn’t misunderstand the ingredients? Coronation chicken sounds much more likely than coronation chickpea.

Nothing you can do either way if they’re closed until Monday.

OP said her dad made a point of checking.

That's really hard to believe.

Do they think that the "Coronation Chickenpea" has chicken & chickpeas in??!!

Somebodylikeyew · 28/02/2022 17:37

That is awful!

KatherineJaneway · 28/02/2022 18:05

I'd think it would. It says the work chicken in the title.

SparklyLeprechaun · 28/02/2022 18:06

I'm not sure what's more shocking, that they were stupid enough to do this, or that they were stupid enough to admit it.

BlanketsBanned · 28/02/2022 18:10

If the staff are that ignorant about food safety, dietary requirements and allergies I wonder what the standards of hygiene and food storage are and would never shop there again. If it was my decision there would be a fine and the staff responsible should be sacked.

I just can't see why it would be called chicken anything tbh!
BlanketsBanned · 28/02/2022 18:19

Maybe they should just serve hummus

Given that a vegan sandwich was specifically requested and double checked I’d hope it wouldn’t.

So this is a sandwich she has made to order, and then printed off the wrong label?
She was asked to make a vegan sandwich, didn’t and then printed off a random label.

MissMaple82 · 28/02/2022 21:55

For a vegan, or vegetarian this is a really horrible situation to be put in. They absolutely need to be informed of this so as not to make the same mistake again. And yes an apology and some form of monetary compensation, maybe in the dorm of a voucher for the emotional distress caused. If you're not a vegan or veggie you can't possibly understand the distress this could cause to some.

MissMaple82 · 28/02/2022 21:59

Wow, just wow.. I'd be informing trading standards or whatever the food equivalent of thus massive faux pas

Persephonegoddess · 28/02/2022 22:02

Sarah's law means this business have made a massive error, Report to EHO.

Persephonegoddess · 28/02/2022 22:05

Sorry I meant Natasha's law, brain is muddled this evening

6demandingchildren · 28/02/2022 22:06

In fairness they did offer a refund and food vouchers, but we are not local to this shop even though we will be in the area tomorrow but doubt we will have time to go in, we are not interested in a refund and we don't want vouchers as I doubt we will ever use them again as we can't trust what they are selling to us.

EeeICouldRipATissue · 28/02/2022 22:14

You can't just let it lie, as an allergy sufferer this kind of thing scares me and could be so dangerous.
Just because your Dad wasn't bothered /got lucky and wasn't allergic, doesn't mean the next person won't be.

WildImaginings · 28/02/2022 22:33

That's appalling.

Take the chicken out of the equation for the moment. Someone with an egg allergy could have ordered that sandwich as they know it would have vegan (and therefore egg free) Mayo in it. Instead, the shop hands them a mislabelled sandwich with non vegan Mayo in, which contains eggs.

That shop does not give a shit. They are not giving sufficient training to their staff and you absolutely should report this.

I'd be curious to know what they mean when they say 'she mentioned that she told your father that they were labelled incorrectly as we do not have chickpeas in the shop.' Is she claiming that they informed your father that the sandwich was not as labelled? It doesn't make it right because they should have never knowingly put an incorrect label on something, but are they trying fox make excuses and say that your father knew?
