More of a WWYD than AIBU chicken in a vegan sandwich.

My lovely step mum is moving and the family have got together to move her today, my dad went to a local bakery to get everyone lunch, my husband is the only vegetarian and my dad got him a chickpea coronation sandwich after double checking with the assistant my dad spent over £50 in there, after a few mouthfuls my husband came across a large chunk of chicken looked in the sandwich and there was small bits of chicken in it, I contacted them through Facebook messenger they have read my message that says

My father came to you early this afternoon and bought lots of food for the family, the coronation chickpea sandwich however contained chicken after the vegetarian who was eating it found out it also contained no chickpeas.
We still have half left with the packaging, how would you like to move forward with this issue?
Regards

But obviously won't get a reply now until Monday at the earliest.
What else can I do?

Yanbu to be annoyed and the company needs to review its processes as chicken is not on the list of ingredients so they need to make sure things are getting the right labels in case someone dies from an allergy! And coronation chickpea is definitely A Thing as a vegan sandwich filling. I wouldn’t expect anything before Monday but I would want an apology and a promise to review quality control processes.

Legoisthebest · 26/02/2022 17:56

I can't believe the casual-ness of some of the responses here. Imagine this was an allergy issue not a food choice issue. Someone could quite easily be dead as has happened in the past with poorly labelled food.
OP I would contact the bakery and say you are not interested in a refund but you would like a investigation of what happened. If they don't respond or take you seriously then I would report to the food health and safety/trading standards. Infact I would do that anyway.
After that teenage girl died from an allergic reaction in Pret a Manager I thought food standards and labelling were meant to be much much stricter.

Yeahbutnotreally · 26/02/2022 17:56

@Lockheart you will never have heard anyone mention for you to ask pts if they have a chicken allergy on your annual imms update.

ToiletGambles · 26/02/2022 17:58

It's clearly a case of them putting the wrong label on the packaging. I'm not vegetarian nor have any dietary requirements but I would have been peeved off by this as well, quite a bad error to make if it was a case of someone having an allergy. I'm sure they will be mortified by their mistake and refund you, hopefully it teaches them to take a little more care!

KittenKong · 26/02/2022 17:58

I’m veggie as I’d be majorly pissed off - but to be honest I’d be far more worried that orders are being mixed up (it’s not like I have a fatal allergy). So I’d flag it with them as a potential heath hazard.

I’d want a refund though.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 26/02/2022 17:59

@ImprobablePuffin

If you all checked the label how did every single one of miss where it says chicken?
I think the "chickenpea" is an attempt at wordplay.

The actual ingredients don't mention chicken and the small print says "vegan mayonnaise" too.

ImprobablePuffin · 26/02/2022 18:00

@6demandingchildren

If you all checked the label how did every single one of miss where it says chicken?

But it's doesn't say chicken in the ingredients

I mean that's impossible for us to know as all the ingredients aren't visible in the pictures. But if the name of the sandwich contains the word 'chicken' it would be pretty obvious that there's a possibility it's not veggie.

@DiddyHeck

Spend between now and Monday dressed as a chicken, walking up and down outside the shop, making clucking noises?

Other than that, I can't think what else you can do.

Get on to the daily mail with your sad face
Quartz2208 · 26/02/2022 18:02

Looking at the packaging it is clear it was suppose to be vegan and it got mixed up with a chicken one.

THe fact it is called chickenpea is a play on words it is suppose to be vegan!

I agree that it there are too many its fine responses - if this had been an allergy issue that kind of mistake could have terrible consequences.

DD would have been really upset as a veggie as well if it had happened

It says chicken pea on that label not chickpea

That's why my dad asked the lady behind the counter if he had the right vegetarian/vegan one as that was the one he wanted.

It does get confusing when they name vegetarian food after animals like the no bull burgers and pulled pork things, it doesn't contain pork so why liken it to pork. As my poor dad does get very confused by it all.

I think you're getting me mixed up with the other poster, I agree with you.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 26/02/2022 18:04

A possibility, yes, but lots of vegetarian and vegan foods have meat-related words in the name.

Also why would a non-vegan (chicken) sandwich use vegan mayonnaise (as stated on the label)?

They were reassured by the server that it was vegan and it contained chicken. That's a pretty bad mistake to make. Some people order vegan food because they're allergic to things like egg or dairy. They should be able to order food safe in the knowledge that they're not going to get sick or even die.

deadlanguage · 26/02/2022 18:05

@ragged

Actually... the "chickenpea" thing (= mixed ingredients) makes a lot of sense! the full ingredient list isn't in OP's pictures.
Yes it is, but it goes over two photos - one ends with vegan mayo and the next one starts with rapeseed oil which is the mayo ingredients. It’s not that a chicken sandwich was bought by mistake, the sandwich was wrongly labelled.

Meanwhile in the Ukraine.

Legoisthebest · 26/02/2022 18:06

ImprobablePuffin this says 'chicken' on it but doesn't have any chicken in it. I'm sorry but whoever made the sandwich needs to better training or even be fired.

Meanwhile in the Ukraine.
Hmm

What's going on in Ukraine isn't relevant to this situation.

The mistake made here could easily kill someone. Is that serious enough for you?

Legoisthebest · 26/02/2022 18:06

have better training...

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 26/02/2022 18:06

Yes, they are.

MasterBeth · 26/02/2022 18:09

@WhatsitWiggle

Looks like someone has mispackaged the sandwiches, so that might not be the only rogue chicken sandwich! I am aware of that chain of bakeries but I don't know if sandwiches are prepped on site or delivered each morning from a central point.

Nothing more you can do now, I expect they'll refund the cost of the sandwich and maybe offer a small voucher (£5) as a gesture of goodwill.

Yes, I would expect a refund and probably some goodwill apology payment/voucher. A fiver is fine. What else can they do?

No it couldn’t. Chicken isn’t a killer.

No not it's got fake chicken in it, perhaps the sandwich did too
Sisisimone · 26/02/2022 18:11

I dont know why you asked them how youre going to move forward with this. What on earth do you expect? You'll get an apology and a refund and they'll look into the mis-labelling. No-one died. No-one is going to die from eating a bit of chicken.

As an aside I cannot fathom for a single second how anyone could eat a coronation chickpea sandwich. Sounds truly vile 🤑

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 26/02/2022 18:12

@MasterBeth

No it couldn’t. Chicken isn’t a killer.

Yes, I know that @MasterBeth.

But the café wasn't to know they asked for vegan because of a dietary preference. Many people order vegan food because they have egg allergies and those ARE fatal.

I suspect that's still not serious enough for you though Hmm

EeeICouldRipATissue · 26/02/2022 18:13

No it couldn’t. Chicken isn’t a killer
If they were mixing ingredients up though, it could be deadly, why aren't people getting that?
People have died from such mistakes before
