More of a WWYD than AIBU chicken in a vegan sandwich.

My lovely step mum is moving and the family have got together to move her today, my dad went to a local bakery to get everyone lunch, my husband is the only vegetarian and my dad got him a chickpea coronation sandwich after double checking with the assistant my dad spent over £50 in there, after a few mouthfuls my husband came across a large chunk of chicken looked in the sandwich and there was small bits of chicken in it, I contacted them through Facebook messenger they have read my message that says

My father came to you early this afternoon and bought lots of food for the family, the coronation chickpea sandwich however contained chicken after the vegetarian who was eating it found out it also contained no chickpeas.
We still have half left with the packaging, how would you like to move forward with this issue?
Regards

But obviously won't get a reply now until Monday at the earliest.
What else can I do?

WTF is chickenpea?

As a vegetarian I'd be seriously questioning that before going anywhere near eating it!

As for the people saying 'he'll get over it' and the like. Sniffy doesn't matter comments. After a couple of days of throwing up, I really wouldn't agree with it being 'no big deal'

🙄🙄🙄

Parpophone · 26/02/2022 17:22
@Parpophone

Lol! Neither a vegetarian nor a vegan is gonna want chicken in their sandwich are they
Well of course not!!

Just pointing out the discrepancy.......

I'll go and find something more productive to do Grin

Tee20x · 26/02/2022 17:22

I agree with others that the "how would you like to move forward with this issue" comment is a bit dramatic - obviously they will apologise and offer a refund and maybe a goodwill gesture.

Like you've said, it is an error on the part of whoever packaged up the sandwiches - maybe they will double check their control measures or something.

Obviously it's shit due to the reasons you've mentioned re allergies etc. Luckily in your situation, it doesn't relate to that but at the end of the day mistakes do happen due to human error sometimes.

We all double checked the ingredients after he realised, just a shame he didn't get to eat as he was actually looking forward to it as it was his favourite.

Wow, how will ever get over the disappointment. Tragic. Get some perspective

I said it was a shame not a fucking travesty, if my sandwich had of been messed up I would of eaten something else, but he didn't have that option because of what he chooses to eat, but he had only been lugging boxes and furniture for a few hours, as you can tell I have had a lack of sleep and having to organise a hangry man, they saying moving house is stressful and it's not even our house!

Can’t imagine anything worse than this has happened today, oh wait..

ElBandito · 26/02/2022 17:23

Ok, now I've seen the packaging I do think this is more of a problem. It doesn't include chicken in the ingredients. It looks like they've packed it in the wrong packaging.
It isn't the end of the world this time but as someone with a child with allergies this type of thing could cause massive problems. If those fuckers Pret put a sandwich with sesame in the bread into the wrong packaging for example and someone with a sesame allergy bought it...

oakleaffy · 26/02/2022 17:23

@fluffiphlox

Sounds like someone misheard something somewhere. Chalk it up to experience.
This. No one died, it’s no biggie in the scheme of things.
FantasticFebruary · 26/02/2022 17:23

Just thought, there are a LOT of vegetarian products made with pea protein, so maybe that's what it is!

BlanketsBanned · 26/02/2022 17:24

It says chickenpea whatever that is, does the list of ingredients on the back say chicken. If not then its a label error from the manufacturer or bakery, are they made on the premises.

6demandingchildren · 26/02/2022 17:24

MichelleScarn

Does your daughter's label say coronation chicken or chickenpea?

Hers says coronation chicken

As a vegetarian I would be pissed off if there was undeclared meat in my food. That said, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. I would just assume the sellers are arseholes and it go back.

hashbrownsandwich · 26/02/2022 17:26

Oooh this is the bakery in my area, are you in Sussex?

WhatsitWiggle · 26/02/2022 17:26

Looks like someone has mispackaged the sandwiches, so that might not be the only rogue chicken sandwich! I am aware of that chain of bakeries but I don't know if sandwiches are prepped on site or delivered each morning from a central point.

Nothing more you can do now, I expect they'll refund the cost of the sandwich and maybe offer a small voucher (£5) as a gesture of goodwill.

This time!
Mixing up ingredients in sandwiches could be fatal next time.

Chloemol · 26/02/2022 17:26

Nothing you have to wait until Monday. Wrap the sandwich in foil and put 8n the fridge if you want it as evidencr

hashbrownsandwich · 26/02/2022 17:27

People have genuine allergies to chicken, it's one of the things we have to ask people when we give them a flu jab. So they're bloody lucky if your dad doesn't!

You're getting mixed up with chicken egg allergies. www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/flu-influenza-vaccine/#:~:text=You%20may%20be%20at%20risk,before%20having%20the%20flu%20vaccine.

Allergies to poultry meat are extremely rare in humans.

mumofEandE · 26/02/2022 17:32

I don't understand why we are expected to put up with crappy service in shops etc
So yes the shop assistant/ sandwich maker could have been flustered/ having a bad day BUT making mistakes like this can have terrible consequences
Obviously not in this situation - I have, a few times over the years, found meat in a vegetarian meal / sandwich - I spit it out, tell the restaurant/ shop, get a replacement and go on with my day - no drama - maybe I get a refund maybe not.
But I am not allergic to meat - it is my choice.
If I had a medical condition then I wouldn't be so relaxed over it!

WhatsitWiggle · 26/02/2022 17:32

Actually, I'd also want their reassurance that they've identified the source of the error and rectified it. Whilst this is a veggie taking a few bites of chicken (and as a veggie for 30 years, I'd be pissed off about that), it could have been someone with a dairy or egg allergy and potentially a lot more serious.

6demandingchildren · 26/02/2022 17:33

The sandwiches are made on site, not sure about the rest of the bakery items,
You can get sandwiches that they pre-packed earlier or her then to make them to your specifications.

We really don't care for another sandwich or a refund, it would just be nice to know if we buy from them again this won't happen as what about cross contamination as if the person thought they were using the chickpea version they would of made it on the part of the kitchen used for vegetarian/vegan prep.

@Lockheart yes rare but still exist and we can't take that chance when vaccinating. So while unlikely someone with this allergy would get this dodgy sandwich, it's not impossible that this could have had horrendous consequences.

Thanks I will do that once we get home as we are back that way on Tuesday incase they want the sandwich back to check it.

An allergy to chicken does not mean the flu vaccine is contraindicated. An allergy to egg does, because egg is used in the production of the vaccine. This is not true of chicken meat.

Georgeskitchen · 26/02/2022 17:36

Unless your father has a life threatening allergy to chicken, in which case he needs to go straight to A&E, you will have to wait until Monday. I'm sure they will apologise profusely and give you a refund, don't know what else you expect them to do really!!
