My lovely step mum is moving and the family have got together to move her today, my dad went to a local bakery to get everyone lunch, my husband is the only vegetarian and my dad got him a chickpea coronation sandwich after double checking with the assistant my dad spent over £50 in there, after a few mouthfuls my husband came across a large chunk of chicken looked in the sandwich and there was small bits of chicken in it, I contacted them through Facebook messenger they have read my message that says

My father came to you early this afternoon and bought lots of food for the family, the coronation chickpea sandwich however contained chicken after the vegetarian who was eating it found out it also contained no chickpeas.
We still have half left with the packaging, how would you like to move forward with this issue?
Regards

But obviously won't get a reply now until Monday at the earliest.
What else can I do?

It could have been a tragic result, yes, if someone had allergies. However, it doesn't sound like that in this case, so it's been an inconvenience and unpleasant for the DH in that he ate meat. The shop has been made aware so what else is there to do really?

6demandingchildren · 26/02/2022 17:37

Yes we are in Sussex.
@Lockheart yes rare but still exist and we can't take that chance when vaccinating. So while unlikely someone with this allergy would get this dodgy sandwich, it's not impossible that this could have had horrendous consequences.
I really think you should double check what you need to ask people, it’s people with EGG allergies that can’t have all flu jabs because eggs are used in making some vaccines. Rare chicken allergies do exist but it’s not relevant to the flu jab as chicken isn’t used to make them.

tinyt137 · 26/02/2022 17:38

Unless it's a dietary requirement then it's a harmless mistake.

HotWaterAndLemon · 26/02/2022 17:39

@Prinnny

Wow contact the Daily Mail for maximum exposure, or create a twitter hashtag and maybe a crowd funding page to help deal with his disappointment?

Can’t imagine anything worse than this has happened today, oh wait..

It’s really unnecessary and unpleasant to post a comment like this.

It’s quite upsetting for a vegetarian or vegan to eat meat and can make them unwell.

If you have nothing constructive to add, maybe just move onto the next thread.

Daily Mail sad face

EeeICouldRipATissue · 26/02/2022 17:41

It's not harmless though.
Maybe this time, but mixing up ingredients can be life threatening for someone else.
They were just bloody lucky this time.

butterpuffed · 26/02/2022 17:42

I think they were trying to be clever calling it Chickenpea, mixing together chicken and chickpea . Rather silly of them though, as there are so many vegans and vegetarians.

ragged · 26/02/2022 17:44

It's not really your responsibility to "fix" this.
You let them know, hopefully they will try harder next time.

If it happens again then you know to boycott them in future.
That's all you can do.

ps: I definitely don't eat take-away much. Not only have I never heard of coronation chickpea, I can't imagine having a 'favourite' premade sarnie from a local bakery... oh, and what a lot of E-numbers on that ingredient list.

Cognoscenti · 26/02/2022 17:44

It's pretty obvious you want some sort of compensation (which won't happen). An apology and a refund is what they'll do, and that's all that's needed.
Btw OP, have you decided to contact them independently, since your husband was the one affected and your dad paid? Do they want to take it further?

6demandingchildren · 26/02/2022 17:44

Daily mail would get no sad face as it's a bloody sandwich.
It's the mix up that's the problem as like I said what is it was an allergy reaction.

It wasn't until DH became a vegetarian that I realised how much did and drink had animal products in it including some red wine and cheese as I didn't know what rennet was!

ragged · 26/02/2022 17:44

Actually... the "chickenpea" thing (= mixed ingredients) makes a lot of sense! the full ingredient list isn't in OP's pictures.

LuckySantangelo35 · 26/02/2022 17:45

@mumofEandE

I don't understand why we are expected to put up with crappy service in shops etc So yes the shop assistant/ sandwich maker could have been flustered/ having a bad day BUT making mistakes like this can have terrible consequences Obviously not in this situation - I have, a few times over the years, found meat in a vegetarian meal / sandwich - I spit it out, tell the restaurant/ shop, get a replacement and go on with my day - no drama - maybe I get a refund maybe not. But I am not allergic to meat - it is my choice. If I had a medical condition then I wouldn't be so relaxed over it!
@mumofEandE I know! There seems to be this weird thing on mumsnet where you can’t complain about service if it’s really crap! Don’t get it! Could anyone explain?
godmum56 · 26/02/2022 17:46

@6demandingchildren

My point being that this find of mistake can mil people who have severe allergies. And their is a 5p difference between a coronation chicken sandwich and a chickpea coronation sandwich. And time sensitive if they want the half of the sandwich back to maybe to see if we actually purchased it from them.
stick the sarnie in the freezer
fairylightsandwaxmelts · 26/02/2022 17:49

@tinyt137

Unless it's a dietary requirement then it's a harmless mistake.
But the point is, the café didn't know it was a dietary requirement, fussiness, an allergy or an intolerance. So they should act as though someone is ordering in a certain way by necessity.

If someone orders a vegan or vegetarian sandwich, that's what they should get.

Would you say it's a "harmless mistake" if someone with an allergy asked for an egg-free item and it came with egg? Of course not.

This shouldn't be treated any differently. I'm quite surprised by the attitude of some of the responses here, tbh. Making mistakes with food ingredients can kill people.

NeverChange · 26/02/2022 17:50

The label says Coronation Chickenpea not Chickpea!

Confused, it says chicken and it included chicken.

Hoppinggreen · 26/02/2022 17:51

So your DH got the wrong sandwich (probably due to a mistake at the shop). He ate a bit which was unpleasant but not dangerous
No idea why this needs any further action

EeeICouldRipATissue · 26/02/2022 17:51

Exactiy
I often order vegan dishes because I'm allergic to eggs and I know vegan food is free from them.

ImprobablePuffin · 26/02/2022 17:52

If you all checked the label how did every single one of miss where it says chicken?

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 26/02/2022 17:53

@Hoppinggreen

Because the café weren't to know it was "just a dietary preference."

If someone orders a vegetarian sandwich, that's what they should get.

Making mistakes with food ingredients like this can have life-changing or lethal consequences for people. It's not just a mistake that should be ignored.

I'm surprised how many people are so blasé - would you feel the same if your child or partner had an allergy and was given a meal that gave them a reaction?

PeacefulPrune · 26/02/2022 17:53

Take some pictures of it. They are not going to want the sandwich back. Just hope for a partial or full refund on Monday.

6demandingchildren · 26/02/2022 17:53

My dad wanted to go back but he is like a bull in a China shop and gets irate quickly, my husband said to inform them straight away incase they had any others pre made that had chicken in them. I tried to call but got no answer and couldn't find an email but they were on Facebook so sent them a private message instead of posting to their wall, I sent 3 messages in total within seconds of each other, I'm not very articulate especially when multitasking, they had send a automated message straight away then the next 2 messages came up as read.
Is everyone on this compensation culture? It would cost me more in fuel to collect the £3.60p, not everything in life needs monetary gain as my brain didn't go there.
But step mum is happy as we found a stash of money she forgot she hid but that was a pleasant gain.

OP posts:
alwayswrighty · 26/02/2022 17:54

The labels do not mention chicken as an ingredient. Therefore I understand why the OP and her husband are peed off it contained chicken. OPs DH is a vegetarian. It is his life choice. Not unreasonable to be upset by a mistake like this.

gunnersgold · 26/02/2022 17:54

It says chicken pea on that label not chickpea .

6demandingchildren · 26/02/2022 17:56

But it's doesn't say chicken in the ingredients
