Flying to Europe - is it safe?

This may be the stupidest question but I'm going to ask it anyway because I would really welcome opinions (not on how stupid I am thanks!).

Do you think it is wise to fly to Europe on holiday in light if the current situation in Ukraine? Genuine question as I am not very clued up on the ins and outs of the invasion (apart from the big headlines) and was just wondering how safe it is likely to be albeit at the end of June. I started thinking about it due to a comment made on another thread about the fact that a passenger flight could be shot down even if accidentally.

Do we need to reconsider flying to Europe or are we safe enough?

Obviously nobody can see into the future and maybe this is a non-question but I thought it might be a question worth asking. Thanks

I had been thinking of going to Poland this year - plans to visit over past two years have come to nothing due to Covid - but not now. But it’s a close neighbour of Ukraine’s.

Other, more distant parts of Europe - likely to be fine unless situation escalates significantly. Currently, nothing is flying over Ukraine.

Wingingthis · 25/02/2022 10:45

I don’t think commercial planes are flying over Russian air space so I assume it would be fine

countdowntonap · 25/02/2022 10:47

Are we talking Georgia or Portugal?

Parky04 · 25/02/2022 10:48

Just landed in Spain!

DirectionToPerfection · 25/02/2022 10:48

Why wouldn't it be safe?

I doubt you'd be going anywhere near Ukraine on your holiday? There won't be Russian forces in Spain or France shooting down commercial planes...

amylou8 · 25/02/2022 10:50

I'm sat on a plane waiting to take off from Istanbul. Definitely higher security at the airport but otherwise fine. Uranian air space is closed.

Truegreen · 25/02/2022 10:54

I’ve just cancelled my med cruise for this reason.

Every family member also cancelled their holidays yesterday for same reason.

Holidays are supposed to be fun and relaxing. The worries ruined it for us.

StressyMcStressFace · 25/02/2022 10:58

It's only Spain! I'm aware it is nowhere near Ukraine! Like I said I know it may be a stupid question but maybe I just need some reassurance thanks.
Enjoy your holiday parky04

That's a bit of an overreaction.
DameHelena · 25/02/2022 11:08

Oddly enough, I'd been vaguely thinking of going somewhere in the Baltics this summer. Probably not now though Sad

Seeingadistance · 25/02/2022 11:16

To be fair to pp who cancelled Med cruise, there are already NATO aircraft carriers in the Med and the military presence in that area is only going to increase, so not likely to make for a relaxing holiday!

SpikeySmooth · 25/02/2022 11:16

No experience, but I think Spain is fine, OP.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/02/2022 11:21

It's really pointless worrying about what will be happening at the end of June. Nobody knows. If this escalates then your holiday will be cancelled anyway. If it doesn't, then crack on. That's it.

Mumblechum0 · 25/02/2022 11:25

We're supposed to be going to a wedding in Romania this summer and I'm not booking flights or hotel till much nearer the time as it borders Ukraine

catscatscatseverywhere · 25/02/2022 11:25

Of course. Why wouldn't it? I am going to Poland in March.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/02/2022 11:34

Well I'm obviously not going to get my Chernobyl tour, in which I have a professional interest, in any time soon.

But as to whether you'll be able to safely travel to Spain in three months time, who knows? Nobody can say where we'll be then and you can't say never about anything, because passenger planes have been accidentally shot down or otherwise sabotaged before, but statistically, it's extremely unlikely, even though it can't be considered 100% safe (nothing can, people die falling out of bed or down the stairs at home).

Truegreen · 25/02/2022 11:35

Not really an over reaction to cancel our cruise. We got a full refund, if we waited we wouldn’t, insurance doesn’t cover war afaik

We’re not the only ones to do so. Took ages to get through to travel agent and in their words they processed huge volumes of refunds yesterday.

Did you mean Russia when you said Poland is a "close neighbour of Ukraine"?

The whole of Russia lies between Poland and Ukraine.

@VickyEadieofThigh I think I must be really stupid, can you explain what you mean by this?

Eh? Poland has an eastern border with Ukraine, doesn't it?

I don't know either, and I'm Polish. When I lived there in 2014, Ukraine was our neighbour :D Maybe they changed maps since then?
thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 25/02/2022 11:50

What do people think about Cyprus ? Meant to be going in may

Lanawashington · 25/02/2022 11:50

@catscatscatseverywhere that's what confused me, Poland has a massive border with Ukraine doesn't it? Or have I imagined it

Nisse1 · 25/02/2022 11:51

Poland and Ukraine share a land border of approximately 300 miles.

We both imagined it then :-)
