Is the UK in danger from Russia?

Keep receiving conflicting information. I am sick to my stomach and quite simply hate the unknown. So a simple question - is it likely that the UK will be in danger from Russia? And if so what does that look like? Cyber attacks, bombs being dropped?

Yes, what he really meant with his putting detergent nuclear plans in... was, watch your backs West, we COULD nuke you

He's an utter despot

DoctorSnortles · 27/02/2022 14:01

I am frightened

Youngatheart00 · 27/02/2022 14:04

The nuclear word today has terrified me

Itsnotover · 27/02/2022 14:04

I would not be surprised if those closest to Putin have changed to codes on the nukes.

GrandRapids · 27/02/2022 14:06

This is so frightening

marieantoinehairnet · 27/02/2022 14:06

I just can't see how we stop this man, it feels like he's hell bent on war with anyone

Jasmine5552 · 27/02/2022 14:06

I am sorry I can't answer that question as I don't know.

Itsnotover · 27/02/2022 14:06

How old are you though? There was a time where India and Pakistan were threatening each other with nuclear war. Back in the day, a significant number of people were genuinely concerned about George W Bush, his hawkish administration and the possibility that he might press the red button.
marieantoinehairnet · 27/02/2022 14:07

I also want Liz Truss and go to keep their powder dry as alot has been said over the last days which sets us as a nation out as a front runner.

Jasmine5552 · 27/02/2022 14:07

Also I tend not to worry about things I can't control.

Itsnotover · 27/02/2022 14:08

Some people on here really need to get a grip.

marieantoinehairnet · 27/02/2022 14:08

Well that's great for you... I in the other hand do worry, and have friends in Ukraine

MushroomCat · 27/02/2022 14:09

No, if they nuke us. We will nuke them we have submarines going around in the waters with nukes on so even if they nuke us, we can continue to nuke them etc.

It would be the end of the world basically. Putin knows that. He's not stupid.

marieantoinehairnet · 27/02/2022 14:09

I'd like to see you get a grip with the circumstances my friends are being forced into, then we Ethan's you'd change your stance
Itsnotover · 27/02/2022 14:09

It’s normal to worry. Nobody wants any war. Nobody normal anyway. It’s not normal to fan the flames every time there is a crisis and act like ghouls.

Itsnotover · 27/02/2022 14:10

@marieantoinehairnet I think it’s perfectly clear I am not talking about people in Ukraine. So please do stop being so disingenuous.

HelpMeHiveMind · 27/02/2022 14:12

Are the threats of putting nuclear deterrents on high alert aimed at us- would he actually nuke the UK?

Misuse of a word there, worry is worry and some people need an outlet, you do t need one, you can go away

Itsnotover · 27/02/2022 14:14

@HelpMeHiveMind

No. This thing called mutually assured destruction is why it hasn’t happened for all the years that countries have had nuclear capability.

And no @marieantoinehairnet I will not ‘go away’. There are certain posters on MN alone who enjoy whipping up hysteria.

marieantoinehairnet · 27/02/2022 14:16

Sorry @Itsnotover I didn't realise you owned Mumsnet

To which audience is he performing and for what reason?

He is trying to make out that Russia is at risk of western aggression to a Russian audience

He is trying to intimate and scare western audiences to get their public to pressure their governments to backdown to stop the threat of aggression.

None of this means he will use them or that he has any intention of using them. He may be seriously considering it. I doubt thats what Russian want either though. He has to have a country left to be a President of...

Remember he is currently losing the propaganda war badly and needs to change the narrative back in Russias favour.

I've been wondering today, in the still highly unlikely event that Putin threw caution to the winds and went to set off nuclear weapons, would a member of his inner circle actually turn and assassinate him? After all, they'll be fully aware that it's the end for everybody won't they?
RedToothBrush · 27/02/2022 14:54

@Itsnotover

How do that help? Actually make an effort to explain calmly then.

There are lots of possibilities and lots of things we realistically should be being cautious and prepared / protect ourselves against.

It is a possibility he would nuke an non nato or a similar nato country believing we wouldn't have the balls or stomach to hit back... As we'd be avoiding mutually assured destruction. That'd be one hell of a gamble though...

ClaudineClare · 27/02/2022 14:55

I understand why people are scared, especially younger people. Remember though that there have been times in the past where the world has been far closer to nuclear war than now, from the Cuban Missile Crisis onwards. It is so very unlikely to happen that it is not worth wasting energy worrying about it.

The only people in danger from Putin right now are the Ukrainian people and the young Russian soldiers he is sending to war for no good reason.

croquetas · 27/02/2022 15:00

The threat has always been there. Putin and his generals have nursed this "great ambition" to restore the Russian Empire. Past (western) leaders have lacked the political Will to confront him and have instead sought re- assurance in NATO alliance.
Luckily, whilst the UK, Germany, etc have cut back on defence spending, the US has continued to invest more.

In the event of a nuclear attack, hopefully with advance missile defence capabilities across NATO, we can neutralise / minimise damage and hopefully retaliate with devastating force.

The threat from Russia will always be there, even when Putin is long gone, until it becomes fully democratic, more transparent and progressive.
