To think he should ask for scraps?,

DH called into our local chippy after work tonight, kindly bought me a bag of chips... yet no scraps (batter!).

He NEVER asks for scraps or claims they never have any...i mean is it even worth having chips without scraps on the top??

Aibu to LTB?

So as not to dripfeed... DH does not have scraps, salt nor vinegar on his chips...

To be honest most things are improved by being battered and deep fried.

Goldrill · 23/02/2022 22:08

But.. but ... if the chippy doesn't do scraps, what do they do with the... scraps??? Why would you bin them if someone would eat them (me, definitely).

Or do chippies have to deliberately make them?

I am going to spend the rest of the night stewing on this.

Oooh I luuuurrrvvee scraps!

Is it really true that Southern chippies don't do gravy or curry Shock

Midlander88 · 23/02/2022 22:10

He's quite simply LYING! My bf used to be too embarrassed to ask for scraps if he ordered, and yet always complained if I never asked for them!

If he isn't lying, I think you need to go to a more old school (rougher) chippie. If your chips come in a cardboard box with fake newsprint...you gotta move!

HoldenCaulfieldismyhomeboy · 23/02/2022 22:10

Omg yes, ltb!! Scraps on chips are heavenly.

Mammyloveswine · 23/02/2022 22:11

@RealRaymondReddington

I used to make these on request when I was a teen and worked in a fish and chip shop (SW). We used to call them batter bits not scraps though. Also, who doesn't like salt and vinegar on chips?!
I once had an ex who got us a chippy, we drove to a beauty spot to eat..he had failed to put salt and vinegar on... i was LIVID

It's a sin in our house to have chips and no scraps.
Although I'm with him re no vinegar.

RantyAunty · 23/02/2022 22:12

You call into them next time and ask for a shovel full of scraps.

mrsbyers · 23/02/2022 22:12

Always say no to salt and vinegar and put it on fresh when we get home , reduces the sogginess risk

oakleaffy · 23/02/2022 22:13

I thought you were referring to a Carpenter and scraps for firewood!
Never heard of “Scraps”
What are they?!

userxx · 23/02/2022 22:14

@PukkaP

I've never had scraps

I've not either. I'm clearly missing out.

HopeSpringsInfernal · 23/02/2022 22:14

mmm scraps...heaven

Thedishonthecoffeetable · 23/02/2022 22:14

I grew up in the south of England and when we were kids, think I was10 or 11, we used to go to the local chip shop and get scraps but they called them batter bits, think we paid 2d for them, that's old money, not 2p Grin (depending who was serving, sometimes they were free)

Soggy fish batter is the worst... i only get fish and chips at the coast, open so no chance of a soggy batter...got to be a deep golden bubbly batter too nothing like the disappointment of a pale, flat batter

Im not at all fussy

I get there’s a real passion for them, but to this foreigner they look vaguely revolting, like deep-fried battered fish dandruff.

harriethoyle · 23/02/2022 22:17

Scraps are fabulous. Can also recommend lashings of marmite on your fish batter. Melts in beautifully. Food of champions!

oakleaffy · 23/02/2022 22:17

@Mammyloveswine

Chips and scraps!
Truly never seen those! Do you think they are really a Northern thing? A trip to the fish and chip shop as a kid was always a treat- Rock and chips! Happy days, but not seen scraps!
Theforest · 23/02/2022 22:19

I'm from the south. As kids we often got a bag of scraps for 5p 😆

ParisNext · 23/02/2022 22:19

Live overseas now but W Yorkshire to my core and this thread has reduced me to my most homesick! Bits! They were always bits when I was growing up and I now make my own fish, chips and bits order here to recreate that 1980s authentic experience.
And a ‘Cake’ or fish cake is a disc of potato with a disc of fish battered. Truly the best. Sigh.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 23/02/2022 22:19

I miss scraps so much…it was always chips and scraps for me when I lived in Lincolnshire, I’m in Birmingham now and haven’t been to a chippy that offers them.

CheesePlantMurderer · 23/02/2022 22:20

OMG scraps are godly!! If I make fish and chips at home I make extra batter for scraps. Have even made just scraps 🤣

Sodullincomparison · 23/02/2022 22:21

I hate scraps!!!! I am northern but not from a part where scraps are common place.

DH on the other hand loves them! From 30 miles away.

M&S now do little pots of scraps.

Not for me thank you.

Bellie710 · 23/02/2022 22:21

Scraps sound grim! Never even heard of that, chips with lots of salt and vinegar yes but why add anything to that!

JasmineTeacup · 23/02/2022 22:21

They used to be called scrantions up in our bit of NE England. Not had any for year and years though Sad
