To think he should ask for scraps?,

DH called into our local chippy after work tonight, kindly bought me a bag of chips... yet no scraps (batter!).

He NEVER asks for scraps or claims they never have any...i mean is it even worth having chips without scraps on the top??

Aibu to LTB?

So as not to dripfeed... DH does not have scraps, salt nor vinegar on his chips...

I'm in East Anglia and they're normal here. I've had them in Kent and East Sussex as well. Definitely not just northern.

andysgirl22 · 23/02/2022 21:43

Definitely definitely definately give the chipie owner a photo and a note this is legitimately both the most necessary and best idea I've ever heard OP

ThePennyJustDropped · 23/02/2022 21:45

No scraps, no salt, no vinegar = no point having chips!

Can manage without the scraps if I must but good lord no salt or vinegar either is purgatory

I've never seen or heard of this either. Do they specifically fry bits of batter for you to buy or are they just left over bits floating about in the oil all night? Sounds grim.

MajesticallyAwkward · 23/02/2022 21:48

LTB immediately 😁

Who doesn't have scraps?! (Southerners aside, they don't know how to chippy
As an aside, I found a chippy near me that does battered crab sticks and I have never been so excited. Haven't seen them in about 15 years, I fee chips, scraps and battered crab sticks coming

Leftover batter bits taken out of the oil... stored in a little section in the warmer bit..,

I made scraps deliberately in my deep fat fryer yesterday. No chippie required Grin

Feelingsadtonight · 23/02/2022 21:53

Another Southerner here… didn’t know what we’ve been missing out on, want to try them

My mam used to make scallops for tea... like a pattie of corned beef sandwiched between sliced potato, battered then shallow fried... ive just rang her and asked her to make them next time i go for tea! Theres usually scraps involved too!

I am also a Northerner and love scraps with chips if I am not already having fish.

But when I was a teenager my friend and I went to a chippie near my friends house and she asked for chips, scraps and "pea wet" I had to ask her what the hell is pea wet? It is the juice the peas sit in, she couldn't afford peas so pea wet was the next best thing and free.

Turns out loads of her friends in her area all knew and had pea wet. Not being a fan of peas I never had it. Like a poor man's gravy I suppose.

MajesticallyAwkward · 23/02/2022 21:57

@Mammyloveswine they are amazing. A crab stick is alright, tasty enough. But batter and deep fried those bad boys will change your life!

Euiren · 23/02/2022 21:58

I thought it’s was about asking for leftovers lol

Ebananascroogey · 23/02/2022 21:59

Need to wade in here with the fact that I like a northern fishcake with my salt & vinegar soaked scraps. Since I moved up North I don't know how anyone can enjoy manky minced up fish in breadcrumbs! Grin

Riseholme · 23/02/2022 21:59

Battered cod roe, that’s what I miss.

spudjulia · 23/02/2022 22:01

Fishy scraps?? Have they fallen off the battered fish??

Scollops I used to have but it was only potato. Like a big disc of chip. And they were 10p for a massive scallop.

Scraps are called gribbles here

Nobody here understands gravy Sad

DaphneSprucesPippasClack · 23/02/2022 22:03

Omg I've never had scraps!? And I'm northern

Lougle · 23/02/2022 22:04

I actually made haggis fritters. But I had some left over batter, so it was drizzled into the fat and scraps were had.

RealRaymondReddington · 23/02/2022 22:04

I used to make these on request when I was a teen and worked in a fish and chip shop (SW). We used to call them batter bits not scraps though. Also, who doesn't like salt and vinegar on chips?!
