To think he should ask for scraps?,

DH called into our local chippy after work tonight, kindly bought me a bag of chips... yet no scraps (batter!).

He NEVER asks for scraps or claims they never have any...i mean is it even worth having chips without scraps on the top??

Aibu to LTB?

So as not to dripfeed... DH does not have scraps, salt nor vinegar on his chips...

@Riseholme

While we’re talking chippys what exactly is a saveloy?

Southern sausage.

Lemonsandlemonade · 23/02/2022 22:41

I won’t have vintages it makes the chips cold.

Great with curry sauce in a separate container.

Mumofsend · 23/02/2022 22:41

Love curry sauce but gravy with chips?! The southerner in me just died a little...

Jadecarrot · 23/02/2022 22:43

We call them scrunch down here

Riseholme · 23/02/2022 22:43

@Mammyloveswine
So its a red skinned pork sausage..served on a stottie (geordie type of bread bun) with stuffing, peasepudding and gravy... mmm

Thanks
Not sure if I’ll like that but possibly try it next time.

Chips without gravy is like a kiss without love. Empty nothingness.

Bakewelltart987 · 23/02/2022 22:47

I've never been in a chippy and they ask if you want batter if they did I would be like erm no I asked for chips 😂

Whatkatyforgottodo · 23/02/2022 22:48

Grew up in the midlands and a fish and chips van used to go round the local villages. We called them batter bits and the only thing nicer was a pineapple fritter! I’m craving fish and chips with batter bits and a pineapple fritter now!

SpiceRat · 23/02/2022 22:49

Your chips can’t be hot enough or you’re putting an entire bottle of vinegar on if it makes them go cold!

Scratchings or Scraps are amazing and I always bloody forget to ask for them and then wail when I get home 🙈

Northerner living in the Midlands. Bloody miss a Saveloy Dip too, visiting my parents at the moment and I’ve had 3 in 2 days Blush

nadiamumoftwo · 23/02/2022 22:49

Never heard of them! Sound very oily 😃

JudgeJ · 23/02/2022 22:49

@GreenFingersWouldBeHandy

Russia is about to cause WW3, but you don’t have scrappy bits of leftover batter?
Do lecture us on what we can do to stop Putin's ambitions, in the mean time we can do something about scraps if you go to a proper chippy.
TeaAndBrie · 23/02/2022 22:51

I’m in Suffolk and have always had scraps!

JudgeJ · 23/02/2022 22:51

@Goldenbear

We don't have scraps at our local fish and chip shop but in the south again..We don't have gravy but do have have battered halloumi!
Battered halloumi, sounds like the South's answer to the battered Mars bar.
TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 23/02/2022 22:53

Ok I could just about deal with the whole "no scraps" thing.

But no salt and vinegar??? Lordy what on earth have you married??

100% LTB!

Zonder · 23/02/2022 22:54

@EssexLioness

Northerner moved down to the south many years ago. My biggest regret is that they don’t do scraps down here. Bloody love scraps!
I was about to say the same thing. Miss scraps.
tintodeverano2 · 23/02/2022 22:55

@JayAlfredPrufrock

This is why I feel sorry for Southerners.
Southerner here. My parents used to talk about scraps when they were younger, but I've never seen them in any chippy apart from up in Whitby.

But, the chippy van that comes to our village give scraps with the chips. They are amazing.

Wineat5isfine · 23/02/2022 23:00

South east here - scraps are widely available and welcomed with lots of salt and vinegar!

spongedog · 23/02/2022 23:00

No gravy needed with chips - just mayonnaise (according to my teenager).

Now I only need salt and mega amounts of vinegar. Love the sound of these scraps - but please clarify - are they fishy bits or left over chippy bits?

ineedsun · 23/02/2022 23:01

When DH and I got together he asked for scraps, I had no idea what he was on about.

We had a lengthy debate about what they do with scraps down south ‘err…..put them in the bin!’

I’ve been up here for nearly 30 years and still haven’t eaten them.

Wineat5isfine · 23/02/2022 23:01

I will say that neither curry sauce or gravy belong with chips!!! (Sorry!) 🤮

Imnoteatingthat · 23/02/2022 23:05

I’m in coastal East Anglia. Chips and scraps here! They aren’t a menu option though, you have to ask.

Scraps, whilst delicious, are no match for a potato scallop covered in bubbly batter... That’s tomorrow’s dinner sorted!

TrashyPanda · 23/02/2022 23:07

@Wineat5isfine

Agree

It’s salt and sauce around here. Proper chip shop sauce, which is HP and vinegar. Amazing. It’s an Edinburgh tradition.

BiscoffAnythingIsTheWayForward · 23/02/2022 23:09

Yorkshire …scraps or bits. Those crispy little bits of batter that come away from the fish/fish cake/sausage when battered. Divine! As a kid we used to ask for a bag of scraps and sprinkle them on our food so they stayed crispy 😆 slathered in salt and vinegar 🤤

EatSleepReplete · 23/02/2022 23:11

Northerner here - scraps are a wonderful thing, & although our local chippy does excellent GF fish & chips, they don't do GF scraps. DH has just suggested I ask them to make some for me next time we go... I will blame him though! Grin
