AIBU to think that the universities should be the ones to make the admission decisions, and that this will do what the article says: restrict access to those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

I felt so sad when I read this. Society feels so bloody regressive right now Sad

@Darbs76

I got a D in maths GCSE and tried it twice. I went on to get B&C at A level (had a child by then and a job too) and a 2:1 at Uni. I have a well paying job I think (50k plus) so I think it wasn’t a wrong decision I went to Uni. Rather hilariously I did 2yrs of AAT (accountancy) as part of a job and once was the budget manager of a very large public service budget. Never any problem as I had excel and other databases as my friend!!
And you would still be able to go under the new proposal too as you have more than 2 x E at A level.

And indeed mature students will.be exceptions.

I think it's a good thing. They aren't setting the bar high, anybody remotely academic will still be able to access the university system, but they are filtering out the completely unsuitable candidates who were getting funneled through bs degrees that taught no useful skills and prodived no employment advantage just so that they could be milked for tuition fees, with the full knowledge that it was astronomically unlikely that they'd ever suceed enough to pay anything back.

Well maybe. But we don’t know how many do degrees without English and Maths at grade 4. So we don’t know what difference it will make. We also don’t know if the absence of one of these GCSEs really stops progression to a decent job for grads without them. It seems quite possible to get some jobs without maths GCSEs. Do all gifted mathematicians have English gcse? I don’t know but if we want poor performing degrees removed, we need to convert them to HNDs and be honest about what A levels are needed for degrees. In my view, CCC minimum.
