I will try and explain as clear as I can

To get into my car park for work you have to turn right off a main road and straight into the opening for the car park. There is a path/cycle Lane either side of the opening.

For the second time this morning, the same cyclist has not stopped to see if the coast is clear to cycle across the turning, meaning I have had to slam my brakes on/he’s swerved to miss me. This means I’ve had to stop dead in the middle of the other side of the road to ensure I don’t hit him.

Am I right in thinking cars have the right of way turning in and cyclists should wait on the path until it’s clear?

Tempted not to bloody stop next time. Grrrrr

I’d say that the cyclist has right of way, same as a pedestrian would, under the revised Highway Code.

Mads123 · 23/02/2022 08:09

The highway code has changed, they now have the right of way.

wonderwoman26 · 23/02/2022 08:10

That is absolutely mental. I hate cyclists at the best of times but given he’s safer on the path then I am in the road, that decision baffles me

They have right of way and you should be checking before you start your turn so you're not forced stop across the oncoming lane.

wonderwoman26 · 23/02/2022 08:12

Can I also be clear - both times I have already initiated the turn before he’s got to the opening, so I have started to turn first before he attempts to cross. Yet he still chooses not to stop

EricScrantona · 23/02/2022 08:12

Why do you hate cyclists?

HollyGoLoudly1 · 23/02/2022 08:12

A diagram might help, I'm not sure I'm picturing this correctly. From what you've described, I would say the cyclist has right of way. Am I right in thinking you have to drive across a cycle lane to get to the car park? So the cyclist is in the cycle lane?

SugarAndCoffee · 23/02/2022 08:12

No you have to check the road you are turning into is clear. If there's a cyclist in the road don't run them over.

luxxlisbon · 23/02/2022 08:13

So you are turning into and through the cycle lane? And the cyclist is continuing straight on the road?

No cars don’t have right of way to cross over cyclists in that situation.
It isn’t a path, it’s a cycle LANE so they are free to continue on and it is on you to wait for a break in the traffic. The same as if you were in the right hand lane wanting to turn left, it wouldn’t be up to motorists in the inside lane to stop for you.

wonderwoman26 · 23/02/2022 08:13

No there is no cycle Lane to cross to get into the car park - the paths completely stop to open for the turning as it’s into an industrial park

Oh I see. Then he's a bit silly but you should still be going at a speed that you are able to stop.
FawnFrenchieMum · 23/02/2022 08:13

Cyclist now have the right of way so you should be waiting until it’s clear as you would for an on coming car.

SlipperyLizard · 23/02/2022 08:14

No cyclist is “safer” anywhere than someone in a car. The whole point of the new Highway Code is to protect more vulnerable road users.

You must either see him coming if he’s cycling towards you, or pass him before you get to the car park if he’s going in the same direction. Will it cost you that much to wait a few seconds for him to pass?

I drive more than I cycle these days, but the sheer entitlement of some drivers never ceases to amaze me.

countrygirl99 · 23/02/2022 08:14

If there is s cycle lane why are you assuming they stop to let you cross. Would you assume a car coming would stop?

ChiselandBits · 23/02/2022 08:14

The cyclist or pedestrian is continuing on their straight path whereas you are turning. They are far more vulnerable than you. Having said that, I agree that as a pedestrian I am not just going to stride out across a turning where someone is indicating to enter it because I'd rather wait a moment and guarantee my own safety than rely on someone with an attitude like yours seems to be.

Wiennetta · 23/02/2022 08:15

The cyclist has right of way. Drivers like you are dangerous - you’re anti cyclist and you don’t know how to drive.

Cyclists are still inside lane traffic, if you are turning off one road and onto another then you need to wait until there is a break in the traffic - cyclists included.
wonderwoman26 · 23/02/2022 08:15

This is my best diagram lol!

This. Even before the changes to the highway code, you as a driver, should be checking that the road/cycle lane is clear. The cyclist has right of way if you are turning from a main road into a side road or other entrance. Patience...
Hoardasurass · 23/02/2022 08:16

Doesn't matter the rules changed you do not have right of way

countrygirl99 · 23/02/2022 08:17

So you are crossing thecycle lane just as you would cross the opposite lane of cars. Why do you see a difference?

Trisolaris · 23/02/2022 08:17

Cyclist has right of way. You can see them coming and are driving into their path.

How is he safer on the bike path, when the owner of a fucking large piece of metal who “hates cyclists” and is “tempted not to bloody stop next time”, despite not knowing and breaking the highway code?

Just vile.

SugarAndCoffee · 23/02/2022 08:17

Oh. Then no the cyclist is fine you should be aware of the cyclist. Did you not see them?
