Who’s in the right?!

I will try and explain as clear as I can

To get into my car park for work you have to turn right off a main road and straight into the opening for the car park. There is a path/cycle Lane either side of the opening.

For the second time this morning, the same cyclist has not stopped to see if the coast is clear to cycle across the turning, meaning I have had to slam my brakes on/he’s swerved to miss me. This means I’ve had to stop dead in the middle of the other side of the road to ensure I don’t hit him.

Am I right in thinking cars have the right of way turning in and cyclists should wait on the path until it’s clear?

Tempted not to bloody stop next time. Grrrrr

So funny isn’t it, within 10 minutes of the post being up asking a question as to who’s in the wrong, I’ve been told I’m entitled, a dangerous driver and that people hate me.
With zero prior knowledge of anything about me - the internets a funny place.
I’m sorry the worlds so horrid to you that you feel the need to insult complete strangers online. I hope the day gets better for you trolls xx

You said you hate cyclists. I can’t see any difference between that comment and the responses you don’t like.

RedRobyn2021 · 23/02/2022 08:29

You are in the wrong

Also you had cyclists? Why???

RedRobyn2021 · 23/02/2022 08:29

Hate*

That all came after you announced your hated of cyclists.
SeasonFinale · 23/02/2022 08:31

You say you wait until the coast is clear but you aren't because the cyclist is obviously cycling along as you turn. You are just misjudging their speed. They don't appear out of nowhere.

I am concerned that these ridiculous new rules are going to cause some serious accidents

I don't understand your logic. The new rules are there to make drivers of motorised vehicles be more careful and pay more attention to vulnerable road users. If followed properly, they will prevent accidents.

wonderwoman26 · 23/02/2022 08:32

To be clear - I’m not wound up! I was genuinely curious as to who had right of way.

My personal opinion on cyclists is mine, and I’m allowed to be frustrated at cyclists should I wish. Same as you allowed to be frustrated at drivers should you wish. Difference being how we all go about it.

Ps - I’d be surprised if a parent and a pushchair was coming down the path at lightening speed. But I’ll be on the lookout for speedy prams

Just consider the cycle lane another lane of traffic. You wouldn't cross two lanes of cars until both were clear. Its the same thing.

OwlinaTree · 23/02/2022 08:34

So is the cyclist cycling on the pavement? From the diagram it looks like the cyclist is on the wrong side of the road to be in a cycle path.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 23/02/2022 08:34

@wonderwoman26 if only there had been talk about the new rules in the news and social media over the last few weeks...

Don’t have social media - and avoid the news like the plague as to not be depressed by current world affairs so this one slipped my radar

Not frustrated at drivers. Frustrated at drivers like you. There is a difference.

Aprilx · 23/02/2022 08:35

@wonderwoman26

That is absolutely mental. I hate cyclists at the best of times but given he’s safer on the path then I am in the road, that decision baffles me
A lot of cyclists annoy me too, but you are absolutely in the wrong here. Of course the cyclist has right of way in that scenario, and they did before recent changes to the law. Very rare for anybody turning right to have right of way unless there are right turn traffic lights.
EnjoyingTheSilence · 23/02/2022 08:35

@wonderwoman26 yeah ok 😆😆😆

SugarAndCoffee · 23/02/2022 08:35

I do think some cycle lanes need speed limits tbh

CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/02/2022 08:35

You're in the wrong, not the cyclist.

Yes on the pavement - I say there’s a cycle Lane I’m now debating whether there actually is or whether a it’s just a standard path

As a driver it's your responsibility to be up to date on changes to laws and the highway code. Ignorance would not be a defence in court!

I get that cyclists can be annoying, but your attitude does stink. All the 'maybe I won't stop next time' - it's not funny to contemplate knocking cyclists down. You can be done for murder or manslaughter for that or at least death by dangerous driving. Long prison sentence.

I drive and cycle, I can tell you I encounter way more arsehole drivers when I'm on a bike than arsehole cyclists when I'm driving. People throwing things, yelling things, turning right in front of me without indicating. Car doors opening suddenly. When you drive, you risk denting your car but when you cycle you risk having your body crushed. That's why drivers are required to take a bit more care.

Why don't you try riding a bike, OP? It might give you a better understanding.

Heytheredemons · 23/02/2022 08:36

You are crossing his path, so therefore, you have to give way. So what if it's a cyclist you are annoyed with? Would you just drive into an oncoming car who continued along their right of way just because you felt they should give way to you??

Some people really have no business being in charge of a motor vehicle

bert3400 · 23/02/2022 08:37

@wonderwoman26

And you hate all cyclists and would be happy not to stop if one crossed your path ......and you think we are deranged Confused

Fizio · 23/02/2022 08:37

Wow. Are you OK OP? You’re in the wrong here and your attitude is appalling. But at least tomorrow morning you will have the benefit of knowing the rules of the road, so you will have no reason to get annoyed.

wonderwoman26 · 23/02/2022 08:38

Your all giving me a right chuckle this morning. Thank you all for informing me of my evil, murderous ways.
Forgot how serious mumsnet is on everything. God forbid a sense of humour was to creep into your lives somewhere

It might not be a speedy pram but it could be a child on a scooter, or just a child running. The point is that you should make every effort not to harm other road users.
Bullandbush · 23/02/2022 08:41

It doesn't matter if the cyclist is technically correct.
If they're stupid enough to cycle in front of a turning car because it's their right they'll soon be knocked off.

There's being right and there's being stupid.
