I’m not talking about those who English is a second language but words or phrases which are said by an OP, which may not be 100% clear, but by taking in the entire post, it’s clear what the OP means.

Some posters have to reply saying “xxx. What does xxx mean? I don’t understand”

When it’s cleared up, they have to return to say “oh. I only know it by it’s proper name yyy. I can’t bear people saying xxx”

Actually probably sounds rude. Blush It isn’t. Smile

Stravaig · 21/02/2022 19:39

Well I'm not clear on woowoo, didn't see the original context. But nippy has connotations of sharp, stinging, stabby. Hence nippy weather (icy air) & nippy sweetie (sharp-tongued lass). If woowoo was vulva, then stinging from cystitis; if woowoo was period, then sharp stabbing cramps. Either way, very evocative! My language is better than your language.

Woowoo though, wtf.

AllOfUsAreDead · 21/02/2022 19:40

@DrSbaitso

Don't worry about it, it's nothing important. Smile

bellac11 · 21/02/2022 19:42

I wouldnt have known what a Tangie is either

I dont think girl only refers to children. Im a 'girl' and Im very middle aged

I think that its clear sometimes when someone makes a typo and sometimes you can work out whats being said but I think its a shame that over the last few years its seen as something negative to share information about how to use language effectively and usefully in written communication. Even teachers these days dont seem to correct grammar and spelling properly or even understand it

As I get older however I find I look back at something Ive written and Ive either spelt it phonetically for some unknown reason or muddled up their, they're and there or of and off or than and that and I have no idea why seeing as I know the difference.

So there are all sorts of reasons why people use various words, its a mistake or they dont know how to spell or they use abbreviations that no one else knows about.

@Thoosa

I’m just trying to think what my regionalisms would be. So hard to know because we all take slang for granted.

If I said I was going to tosh up something or give it a tosh would everyone know what I meant?

Urban dictionary would have me believe you were going to give a rimjob.... I'm guessing that's not right Grin

No clue. But I’d probably Google it, same way I did when I first read “chapped the door” and thought, eh? A lot of the I don’t understand posters seem to have a broken Google.

Tangies, though. That needed saying. And no way would I ever Google “nippy woowoo” for fear of the internet popo.

MissMaple82 · 21/02/2022 19:51

Literally no clue what you're talking about. Talking in riddles lol

Bromse · 21/02/2022 19:53

Not quite sure what you mean in your opening post, Soubriquet...would you repeat it and be a bit clearer, please?

Thoosa · 21/02/2022 19:55

It seems Google doesn’t work well for finding the meaning of “tosh up”, nor “nippy woowoo”. I’m scared to even try “tangies” TBH. Smile

Classica · 21/02/2022 19:56

I like when someone mentions their tea, as in evening meal, and then several people will do a Confused face and say 'I don't understand, tea is a drink'.

stuntbubbles · 21/02/2022 19:58

Prime example of the trend in this thread, which I remember opening thinking “I bet the question doesn’t get answered because it’ll be full of ‘what do you mean?’ faux questioning the title”:

Oh nippy sweetie where I'm from is a polite way of saying she's an irritating cunt (so probably fits the nippy woowoo idea Grin)

bellac11 · 21/02/2022 20:01

I forgot to add that Im new to this site and often havent a clue what all the letters stand for. I managed to find a list of acronyms but still get flummoxed. I was reading a thread earlier about a poor woman and her mental inlaws and she kept using LC and NC. Those letters are not on the acronym list so I have no idea and the context didnt help. Not coping?

I also say tea for my evening meal.

stuntbubbles · 21/02/2022 20:02

@bellac11 Low contact and no contact.

Millionairenow · 21/02/2022 20:04

I wouldn't Google half those expressions up thread either, I'd ask on the thread in question as would be too worried what the answer might be.

Tangie is a bit rubbish though, I'd assume an Australian slang for something as they knock half the letters off pretty much everything!

Stravaig · 21/02/2022 20:07

What's the word for a people who colonise other countries, can't be arsed to learn their languages, so try to eradicate those languages entirely?

Oh, that's right: English.

Bit racist.

We're not all the same y'know.

Stravaig · 21/02/2022 20:11

@JenniferWooley It's tricky applied to women, expressive aye, but often misogynistic as fuck! Period/cystitis though, perfection.

BearOfEasttown · 21/02/2022 20:13

@hangrylady

Yes, a lot of Petty Betties on here. I imagine correcting others makes them feel superior when in reality they just sound like dicks.
100% this. ^

I see TEA for my evening meal too.

What point? You were or weren't insulting those of us who don't know what "nippy" means in relation to a woowoo? You've got several of us thinking you might have been, so either you're right and we're mega thick, or you weren't being quite as crystal clear and unambiguous as you think.

Why am I even discussing a nippy woowoo???

Are you being serious?
Who is 'several of us' and why are any of you confused as to what the PP was referring to? Did you miss the whole long definition of 'girl'?

Are you an actual doctor?

JenniferWooley · 21/02/2022 20:18

@Stravaig to be fair where I'm from the c word is mostly used as a term of endearment so no one really takes offence but I have an English friend who doesn't get it & got very upset when I used it but then she uses cow in the same way & where I'm from that's fighting talk calling a woman a cow so it's swings & roundabouts I suppose

BearOfEasttown · 21/02/2022 20:23

Nippy means cold for me too.

DrSbaitso · 21/02/2022 20:23

Because the conversation turned to nippy woowoo and then the ambiguous comment appeared. It seemed to be using the dictionary exchange as an example of why we're all thick. Several of us were unclear. There isn't only one conversation running in the thread. It wasn't clear in the context if we nippy woowooers were also being chided. Although it's pretty clear we are now.

And if it helps, I think we're all sorry we asked!

And no, of course I'm not a doctor. My name isn't Sbaitso either. You were complaining about people not Googling unfamiliar references? Just look it up, before I get a nippy woowoo-induced parity error.
