I’m not talking about those who English is a second language but words or phrases which are said by an OP, which may not be 100% clear, but by taking in the entire post, it’s clear what the OP means.

Some posters have to reply saying “xxx. What does xxx mean? I don’t understand”

When it’s cleared up, they have to return to say “oh. I only know it by it’s proper name yyy. I can’t bear people saying xxx”

OP posts:
AllOfUsAreDead · 21/02/2022 19:03

See? I was right, people are just stupid. There's posters on here having to show other people dictionary definitions of simple words. Not obtuse, stupid.

CailleachGranda · 21/02/2022 19:03

@SalmonEile

Or someone will say hubby and the first 400 replies are “Yabu for saying hubby” and no other advice or comment on the OPs dilemma
That's fair, though.
EdithRea · 21/02/2022 19:04

The fucking devil's advocate posts.

"My husband shot a man just to watch him die, AIBU?"

"YABU, you need to see things from his point of view, he's probably emotionally repressed and needs you to talk to him and show him attention, ignore these other posters."

I hope you aren’t referring to “nippy woo woo” Grin

I've just looked up "nippy" (I hadn't heard "woowoo" either, but I could guess that one from the context), and I still don't know what that person was saying. None of the definitions make any sense in the context. Unless she meant she'd grown dentata.
Dixiechickonhols · 21/02/2022 19:09

AuntieStella but it was blindingly obvious from post what op was talking about - he’s off to meet another girl. You get meaning from whole post. Seizing on one technically incorrect word didn’t help op in any way.

AllOfUsAreDead · 21/02/2022 19:10

No one has put up a dictionary definition of nippy or woo woo.. Oh my god.. 😂

Well, your post said that people were stupid and mentioned the definitions as if they were merely an example of us all being thick. Do you mean to say that you weren't including those of us who were confused by "nippy woowoo"?

Why am I on the internet on a Monday evening asking questions about "nippy woowoo" and my intelligence in relation to it?

Thoosa · 21/02/2022 19:16

Nippy can mean cold.

Some kind of chilly genitals? Do people phone in sick for that?Confused

AllOfUsAreDead · 21/02/2022 19:17

@DrSbaitso

You're really just proving my point right now..

No one has mentioned or given a dictionary definition of nippy or woo woo. So I must be meaning a different word.

Take a look through the thread, specifically the last page or so, and you should hopefully spot the moment someone gives a dictionary definition of a DIFFERENT word.

RoseAndRose · 21/02/2022 19:19

A nippy was a waitress in a Lyons coffee house

CailleachGranda · 21/02/2022 19:21

I'm an arsehole

I didn't comment on the tangie but I thought it was sweets of some description

I have commented on those who use "pissed" incorrectly. It doesn't make me feel superior. I don't really give a fuck for anyone's opinion though

Theunamedcat · 21/02/2022 19:21

Nippy woowoo is either a cold vulva or an STD

Thoosa · 21/02/2022 19:21

Even more confusing. Smile
CarrieMoonbeams · 21/02/2022 19:23

@Thoosa and @DrSbaitso,

Sorry for the confusion, where I'm from, "nippy" is a very useful word.

It can indeed mean cold. It's also used for lots of other things including this one, where it means that something is stinging. So her poor woowoo was nippy because she had cystitis!

What point? You were or weren't insulting those of us who don't know what "nippy" means in relation to a woowoo? You've got several of us thinking you might have been, so either you're right and we're mega thick, or you weren't being quite as crystal clear and unambiguous as you think.

Why am I even discussing a nippy woowoo???

Ah, thank you!

I've never heard it used to mean anything except cold or a bit bitey.

Oh don't confuse the issue, there's already one person who won't confirm whether I'm thick or not but insists I'm proving the point I had no idea I was arguing about.

Nippy woowoo.

CarrieMoonbeams · 21/02/2022 19:26

Sorry again Blush.

Don't be. There's no such thing as useless information.

I think next time I get unwittingly dragged into some combative internet situation, being thick and proving points I didn't know we were discussing, I'll just say "nippy woowoo" and leave it at that.

Erm, I think you mean WHOSE English OP, not who.

Or should that be DOP? This is Mumsnet after all.

😁

Thoosa · 21/02/2022 19:33

Ouch.

Yes, I think regionalisms explain a lot of the confusion that crops up online.

Thoosa · 21/02/2022 19:34

@CarrieMoonbeams

Sorry again Blush.
Don’t apologise. We just learnt something.
SleepOhHowIMissYou · 21/02/2022 19:35

Warning for swearing but this is pretty spot on.

Thoosa · 21/02/2022 19:36

I’m just trying to think what my regionalisms would be. So hard to know because we all take slang for granted.

If I said I was going to tosh up something or give it a tosh would everyone know what I meant?
