I’m not talking about those who English is a second language but words or phrases which are said by an OP, which may not be 100% clear, but by taking in the entire post, it’s clear what the OP means.

Some posters have to reply saying “xxx. What does xxx mean? I don’t understand”

When it’s cleared up, they have to return to say “oh. I only know it by it’s proper name yyy. I can’t bear people saying xxx”

I wasn't involved in the young woman/girl thing but OK. Say what you want, Bear, I honestly don't care enough for that.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 22/02/2022 14:39

Whenever I see someone on here willfully misunderstanding something I always think of Peter Kay and Garlic Bread.

"What on earth do you mean 'Garlic Bread'? In what way is the bread 'garlic'? Do you mean Garlic flavoured bread? Garlic infused bread? Garlic filled bread? Without a full and proper explanation I can't possibly say if you can serve this as a side for your spaghetti bolognaise...which is what I am assuming you mean by 'spagbol'? Though neither I nor my social circle would ever refer to it as such, I did once hear it called this by some lower class person on the television."

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 22/02/2022 14:42

And as seen on here every November/December time.

"Christmas pyjamas? In what way are they Christmas pyjamas? Surely anything you wear around the festive season or given as a gift at Christmas are considered Christmas pyjamas? Of course, I would never wear something so tacky and joyful. I prefer my nightgowns plain and modest!"

Oh yes, the annual Christmas Eve box stuff.

"I have never understood the concept of Christmas Eve boxes..." It's not difficult. If it's beyond your wit, may I suggest that you don't go anywhere near the hot oven on Christmas Day or handle anything sharper than a spoon.

Nippy woo woo, that's quite enough internet for me today, thankyou.

It sounds like the name of a pantomime dame, oh yes it does!

I thought about making it my username after the ridiculous exchange we had about it last night, but I think it's worth keeping this one for the number of people who think I'm trying to pass myself off as a real doctor.
Thoosa · 22/02/2022 16:34

Did I mind being called a girl? Did I bollocks?! I didn't care a jot, because I am not a petty, pedantic, nitpicker who gets offended at FUCK-ALL.

You do sound excessively angry, though.

Some people think terminology matters in society. You don’t. No need to get quite so aerated about a difference of opinion.

OnlyAFleshWound · 22/02/2022 16:35

@Bearofeasttown I had never heard of it either until this thread, and i hope I don't again.

The poster who shared it said that her female colleague had said it instead of saying 'cystitis' and was surprised that the male manager didn't understand.

As this thread shows, 99% of women don't understand either.

But others do.

And it really is a shibboleth word on MN. Always better to stick to the more standard usage of girl for a child and woman fornan aduit (with a bit of cross-over up to about age 21). Then you offend no one

thetombliboo · 22/02/2022 17:29

Am I in the minority as I don't know anybody in real life that's openly had an issue with girl/baby? Girls night out, having dinner with the girls?
My DH sometimes uses the term 'baby' in bed, (another thread 😅) I have never once thought he's referring to me as an actual baby.

I have posted years and years ago when feeling vulnerable and some posters with their harsh, pedantic approach can really make you doubt yourself.

CailleachGranda · 22/02/2022 17:37
@PleasantBirthday

I didn't, I just explained why I think it's important for young women that adult women use the correct terminology. I didn't say that everyone has to do what I say.

Educate yourself. Grin A young woman can be called a GIRL.

www.bing.com/search?q=define+girl

And as I said further back, there are MANY occasions of men being called boys - in songs and TV and film etc... I don't hear anyone moaning about that though.

And I agree with a pp that it's not up to you or anyone else to police how other people speak and what phrases/words they use.

A man (aged roughly 85-90,) was in front of me in Aldi today, and said to the checkout operator 'this girl can go in front of me, she only as one item...' I am in my fifties!

Did I mind being called a girl? Did I bollocks?! I didn't care a jot, because I am not a petty, pedantic, nitpicker who gets offended at FUCK-ALL. I thanked him politely, and went in front of him. In addition he said 'I like your cat mask my lovely.' OH NO! Shock He called me 'my lovely!' What a horrible sexist git! Hmm Errr, not actually, what a lovely, friendly, polite gentleman he was!

Seriously I swear fucking feminism has done more harm than good sometimes. With so many wimmin getting so offended at fuck-all. Some men are afraid to speak these days! Even my own DH says he has to think for a minute before he speaks to the women at work, lest he offends them with a totally innocuous comment!
Are you sure you're not a pedantic nitpicker, etc?

You seem awfully offended about something

Who knows?

All we do know is that some people really, really don't like it.

So why use language that you know will be divisive? Is your aim to piss off a sector of your intended readership?

It's one thing amongst your like-minded circle of friends. It's quite another on an open Internet forum

There is of course an important point about avoiding the infantilisation of women underlying thus. And that's laudable

Well I think so. No need for posters to develop raised blood pressure, though.

LakieLady · 22/02/2022 18:11

@Aderyn21

Yes, there's wilful misunderstanding on some threads. Correcting someone's spelling or grammar on a thread where the OP is clearly in distress and snd asking for help is proper arsehole behaviour
I agree.

I'm a pedant and struggle to restrain myself sometimes, but I do, because I don't want to be a pedant AND an arsehole.

LucieLemon · 22/02/2022 21:54

But most of the time it's posters who are asking questions on completely unrelated matters. They are often in in a degree of distress and a fair few are vulnerable. Instead of being offered advice or comfort, their grammar and vocabulary are picked apart. I really don't think they have given much thought to their "intended readership" as they were too preoccupied by their real problem.

NippyWoowoo · 23/02/2022 11:47

I think 3 posters on this thread have said they don't like 'girl' used to me woman. Hardly 'divisive'
