To be surprised at the number of grown men into lego

A couple of years ago I was moaning that I had no idea what to buy DH (40) for Christmas. Three men who sit near me immediately suggested a Lego millennium Falcon. I asked DH if he would like this (it’s expensive!) and his eyes lit up. Since then for most birthdays and Christmas I have bought more Lego kits for him (including a home alone one this year!)

Since WFH due to COVID I see into everyone’s home study in zoom calls; and loads of the men in their 30s and 40s have loads of Lego on display; particularly of the Star Wars variety!

Aibi to be so surprised at the number of men Who are so into Lego?

YABU lol, my 15 year old DS is into the Lego Architecture and Star Wars models, he and his Dad spend time together putting them together. He displays them on floating shelves in his room where his 6 year old brother and sister cant reach them, they enjoy lego too, overall Lego is one of the best toys ever for kids and big kidsWink

Lego I understand, more surprising is the number of adult men who are into My Little Pony:

The boxes give an age range up to 99. Lego is brilliant. DH finds it therapeutic. I got him the bonsai tree for Christmas and it's beautiful.

Rewis · 02/03/2022 10:02

Isn't legal basically the same thing as a puzzle?

user1497207191 · 02/03/2022 12:35

Many lego sets are aimed specifically at adults, i.e. with a 18+ age shown on the box.

It's no different to any other "adult" creative hobby, such as model railways, model boats, model cars, robotics, electronics kits, etc.

Are you also surprised at the number of women who do creative things like needlecraft, painting, etc??

Tiredmum100 · 02/03/2022 12:38

It's not just grown men that arw in to lego. I'm 38 and buy lego for myself/ receive as presents from dh. I bought the tree house last year and plan to do it when mu house is finished. I would love the home alone house!! I find it very therapeutic and switch off when building lego. I have a good collection! I also have a friend who's very much in to it as well!
@Imdonna I’m thinking it’s just the sheer number of men that have Lego on display that’s a surprise! When people come over with their kids DH is always taking them a tour of the Lego
I love lego, and my husband loves it even more, but I draw the line at filling the house up with displays of it. It gets built, admired for a couple of days, and then dismantled for next time.

@CHIRIBAYA

Being an adult means endless demands and responsibility. We should play whenever and however we can. I imagine it also helps enter flow state, which is great for healthy brain functioning and restoring inner calm.
Yes I totally agree, lego has been great for my brain, as long as I have all the pieces organized. I am a geek and proud Grin
DontWiltMySpinachPlease · 04/03/2022 18:10

We have an entire console table dedicated to star wars Lego 🙈

CheapFoodShits · 04/03/2022 18:31

Another Lego fan here! I'm very proud of my Friends sets on display in my living room 😂

ImInStealthMode · 04/03/2022 18:33

YABU (lightheartedly). I covet the Home Alone set after having seen it in the Lego shop at Christmas.

I wish there wasn't such a trend for making them and keeping them as ornament pieces though; if the big sets came up second hand more often I'd be all over them.

ISpyCobraKai · 04/03/2022 20:42

I saw the Home Alone set a couple of days ago, it is great, I loved the Friends Coffee shop-Central Perk too.
Dd wants the Millenium Falcon, its £699.
Ouch!

FloBot7 · 04/03/2022 20:46

My DH was jealous because his colleague bought his partner a Lego set of Monica and Rachel's apartment in FRIENDS. I laughed but now I have Lego banked in my birthday presents for April. He's impossible to buy for but for some reason despite never buying it for himself, Lego is amazing.

LondonQueen · 04/03/2022 20:49

It's not just men. I run a lego after school club (my class plus the rest of KS1) and it's the most fun I have all week!

MaitlandGirl · 05/03/2022 05:10

DD2 (21) has just finished Titanic. It’s HUGE! We had to source a sideboard to fit it on.

Ozgirl75 · 05/03/2022 05:16

We all love Lego in our family - kids and adults, my husband and I. In fact I’m always dropping hints that I want sets.

That’s brilliant!
cookiemonster2468 · 05/03/2022 05:26
@BearOfEasttown I’m very sorry that I’ve upset you.

I am genuinely surprised though about how popular it is. The amount of colleagues (always been male colleagues) who have Lego in the background is just very surprising to me. I hadn’t realised it was such a mainstream thing that sooo many men do it (if it was just one or two I wouldn’t have thought much of it)
Why do you find it so surprising?

Lego is a very mainstream, popular toy/ hobby. I don't understand why you are surprised. It's like saying you're surprised people have a games console or something.

OmgIThinkILikeYou · 05/03/2022 05:30

I never had legs as a kid, but I really want a kit now! I think it looks like a really relaxing and fun hobby. I am going to ask for a kit at Christmas I think.

PotBelliesGiveGoodLoving · 05/03/2022 07:12

We have the Falcon. At the time it was £550, but it was assembled over several months so you got your moneys worth in a way. Really fascinating watching it evolve over time. Nice touches with the packaging as well. Ours is now lit with small leds under coloured bricks. Hours spent soldering and hiding circuits under hull plates :-)

Umm, I'm thinking you meant 'Lego' rather than 'legs'. However if not a typo congratulations on getting legs as an adult. Either way you deserve tons of Lego.
WhatdoImean · 05/03/2022 08:06

If you want to get an understanding of just how much fun Lego CAN be and what some people can do with it, try watching Lego Masters Australia... especially Season 2. GREAT fun entertainment, very funny and something the entire family can watch. I would very much recommend the AUZ version - the UK one was not nearly so much fun

MaitlandGirl · 05/03/2022 08:38

@WhatdoImean Jackson and Alex had some incredible builds. CRABLANTIS!!!!

Namenic · 05/03/2022 08:43

Watch Lego masters on tv catch-up - I think channel 4?
