To be surprised at the number of grown men into lego

A couple of years ago I was moaning that I had no idea what to buy DH (40) for Christmas. Three men who sit near me immediately suggested a Lego millennium Falcon. I asked DH if he would like this (it’s expensive!) and his eyes lit up. Since then for most birthdays and Christmas I have bought more Lego kits for him (including a home alone one this year!)

Since WFH due to COVID I see into everyone’s home study in zoom calls; and loads of the men in their 30s and 40s have loads of Lego on display; particularly of the Star Wars variety!

Aibi to be so surprised at the number of men Who are so into Lego?

I never had legs as a kid

Sorry to hear that. Maybe you could make yourself some out of lego?

Seriously tho OP, lego is for EVERYONE. People of both sexes.

It's ace

Brefugee · 05/03/2022 08:47

what about women who like lego? what are we? chopped liver?

AFOL (Adult Fans Of Lego) is a thing and it's a harmless and fun hobby. And some of the rare kits sell for big bucks a few years down the line. Some of the kits are 18+ for a reason

VelvetChairGirl · 05/03/2022 08:49

I am 40+ woman and I love Lego.

I have my Iron man sets on display with my RDJ DVD collection etc

and we buy a set to do together for christmas when they have a good one, mummy son projects. we got a VW campervan, Caterham 7, Mini, Ferrari.

Nidan2Sandan · 05/03/2022 09:00

I'm just waiting for all my kids to move out so I can turn their bedrooms into lego display rooms!

I love lego, but never buy myself any as no where to put it. I cry when the kids build the amazing and expensive kits I buy them and then it all ends up in one big box. Or worse, they only partially build the set (I'm looking at you DD9 and your much begged for lego water dragon)

@MaitlandGirl

Crablantis was great... but I think HeroShot (with the shark!!!) was better :-)

Overall though - really really good fun TV

I’ve never bought Lego for myself until this week when I ordered the Home Alone house as a treat for the autumn evenings.
Dd14 has nearly all the Lego Elves sets and some of the dragons are really quite beautiful.
I told DS 28 what I’d ordered and he thought it was rather cool, he still has the original H Potter sets.
Dd had a couple of the Christmas sets ( Gingerbread house / santas workshop) and it’s me that rebuilds them each Christmas so the HA house will be used a decoration alongside them.
DH has now suggested I buy him a Technic set for Christmas 🙄. I think it’s catching !!

Brefugee · 29/05/2022 11:57

There's a Nautilus (Jules Verne) set on the Creator website, pls all vote for it because i really want one Grin

Still hankering after the typewriter...

Halloweenadoodle · 29/05/2022 11:59

Im actually sitting here right now doing the colloseum. Its stress reducing.

CounsellorTroi · 29/05/2022 12:01

A friend of DH gave us a Lego castle and a bottle of brandy as a wedding present. Many a happy evening spent building the castle while drinking the brandy.

DinosaursEatMan · 29/05/2022 12:05

I got a Lego kit from dh for Christmas, I had asked for that specific one in advance, and we both aspire to the Millennium Falcon when funds allow. Ironically our kids have no interest in Lego!

darisdet · 29/05/2022 12:20

A good female friend of mine has a couple of, eye-wateringly expensive, sets! They look great.

I've seen some I like, but I wouldn't have the patience to build them.

balalake · 29/05/2022 12:22

Isn't it lovely that there are adults who love Lego? Spending time with it instead of on their phones or a computer.

Dominuse · 29/05/2022 12:24

Err it’s not men per se my children are obsessed - eldest is 15. Ask her what she wants and it will be Star Wars Lego / it’s like mindfulness just sit and fiddle for hours but with something to show at the end!

OneTC · 29/05/2022 12:26

I am not "into Lego" but I got a small set for my birthday recently and really enjoyed building it and it's quite a cool little model.

I doubt I'll buy any but if someone gave me a little set for a present again I'd be happy

PlantsAndSpaniels · 29/05/2022 12:42

My other half is currently building the lego I bought him for his 33rd birthday. There are 6 other sets built and displayed in the house at the moment the biggest being My hogarth castle.

Chikapu · 29/05/2022 12:49

I'm really hoping the Polaroid camera becomes a set! ideas.lego.com/projects/200dd32e-8ec8-44aa-8f7d-e4dcc6f74e5c

Infantilization. Same with Marvel. I find it pathetic.
I bought some old toys from the charity shop a short while back which I enjoyed. I ended up giving them to my daughter. Spending "real money" on toys for grown ups?

Sorry, not sorry, it's pathetic.

Really? One hobby doesn’t define a person, you know. I may build Lego today, and have a whale of a time doing so, but tomorrow I will be back in my very responsible and grown up job. You, on the other hand, are acting like a miserable so and so today, and I suspect you still will be tomorrow.

Can you provide a list of approved adult hobbies, just so I don’t accidentally and pathetically infantilise myself?

What's the story behind this change of heart? Did you buy Marvel toys?

What are your hobbies? Apart from being judgemental?

tttigress · 29/05/2022 13:14

I guess it is wholesome but I think it shows a dumbing down of society.

You are meant to use the Lego as a training tool as an inspiration to build real things.

darisdet · 29/05/2022 13:19

I don't know. Some of those models, aimed at adults, look very complicated. They might not be for all I know!

No more pathetic than being an arsehole on the Internet. Do you dislike harmless fun in general or do you just enjoy sucking the fun out of things other people like?

VanillaIce1 · 29/05/2022 13:45

There's nothing wrong with it. Some people like chasing a ball around a field like a dog and screaming goal when it goes in.

Other people like concentrating and building something to create something they'd like to look at or what not.
Don't think it's childish at all.
