Starting to get blustery in Herefordshire: one plant pot over. I fear for my spindlly eucalyptus.

littledrummergirl · 18/02/2022 08:07

Gloucestershire here. A little bit blustery here. I drove ds2 to work earlier as he's still on L plates rather than have him drive as usual but if I hadn't been told we were expecting a storm I wouldn't have known.

merrymouse · 18/02/2022 08:08

People aren’t just advised to stay at home because it’s likely that a tree will fall on them, but because it’s pretty certain that trees will fall down somewhere and block transport. Some people will always have to be on the roads, and inessential traffic just gets in the way.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 18/02/2022 08:08

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

As we haven't yet learned to teleport, the Met Office (not the media) has no choice but to put out storm warnings and point out that if you set off in the morning when it's still fairly normal weather you might find yourself in difficulties later when it looks as it won't be.

They can't win, of course. If the storm they forecast doesn't materialise they will be accused of scaremongering. If there is a storm and they hadn't issued warnings. they'd be blamed for that too. I still remember the great storm of 1987 and Michael Fish on the BBC a few hours before it hit saying nothing to worry about. He never lived it down.

Exactly.

Very windy here on the London/Kent border. I was WFH anyway today, but just looked at the trains into central London out of interest and most of them are cancelled.

swampytiggaa · 18/02/2022 08:08

North Devon here. It’s sounding worse now than it did an hour ago when I woke up…

20viona · 18/02/2022 08:08

I'm In Staffordshire and there's nothing at all yet.

Gregsprinkles · 18/02/2022 08:08

Wind is really picking up here now. Dorset, but right on the coast.

Wagsandclaws · 18/02/2022 08:08

North Somerset, the actual high high winds are on the spur then flank of the storm
Which is still Just off the coast of Cornwall.

High winds expected fir my area from around mid morning then sustained for a good couple of hours and that, is where you may see the real damage.

Don't write it off just yet.

toomuchlaundry · 18/02/2022 08:09

It’s picking up here too

Wagsandclaws · 18/02/2022 08:09

Sorry that was supposed to say the southern flank of the storm.

Goawayangryman · 18/02/2022 08:10

Really worried about my roof... It's knackered anyway, 120 year-old slate. Been putting off getting it done as want a loft conversion. DUH!

Wagsandclaws · 18/02/2022 08:11

Here you go, ( taken from netweather )

Where is this storm then?
Sallycinnamum · 18/02/2022 08:11

I'm involved in crisis comms and our weather advisors were really quite worried yesterday, which was a bit sobering as it's very unusual.

Generally they tend to be a bit cautious but there was lots of 'this could be the worst storm in 30 years' type mutterings.

I hope to god it doesn't pan out as expected but I'm in London and it's very blustery at the moment.

ClearButtons · 18/02/2022 08:11

I'm in south wales and it's definitely getting very windy!! I wouldn't like to be outside. Shame really as the sun is out so would be quite nice otherwise 😬

GirlInACountrySong · 18/02/2022 08:13

@Summerofcontent

Yep!!! But it's the MEDIA hyping it all up....as I said

AlternativePerspective · 18/02/2022 08:13

London/Kent border here, woke up at 6 thinking “wow it’s quiet. Then the wind started picking up about 15 minutes later. It’s not what I’d call high wind here yet but it’s chucking down with rain.

Virtually all the trains out of here into London are cancelled, and thing is, while things will settle later there will likely be trees on the lines and so on so disruption to travel is likely to last longer than the storm.

My DP isn’t local to here and he’s unlikely to be able to get here this weekend.

marqueses · 18/02/2022 08:14

@seperatedmum

nothing in East Herts, I read 3am to 7am? I can hear a slight breeze but also cars on the road. I too have canceled going into London with children
I've also cancelled a half term trip to London, my dcs won't listen to me next time if it turns out we would have been fine to go

Only a slight breeze here, it was much worseat this time yesterday

sanityisamyth · 18/02/2022 08:14

It's starting to pick up in Cardiff but nothing really major 🙈

Summerofcontent · 18/02/2022 08:15

That's their job

The story is irrelevant

cheerypip · 18/02/2022 08:15

We're further west than you and it's really picking up now!

justustwoandmoo · 18/02/2022 08:16

I'm in Liverpool and it's still calm here atm. We were due to travel home today but delayed because of the storm
⛈ x

kungfupannda · 18/02/2022 08:16

South west here and not even a hint of a breeze so far.

Livebythecoast · 18/02/2022 08:18

I'm on the Kent coast and it's definitely picking up here - have turned my bistro table upside down just incase 😬.
Stay safe everyone.

randomchap · 18/02/2022 08:18

It's not hit yet

earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-3.92,52.48,4226 shows live wind speed

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/02/2022 08:18

Mildly windy in East London. So far I wouldn't have noticed anything unusual if not for all the warnings.

The bin men have left bins everywhere as usual, and they aren't even shaking.
