As it's calm where I am at the moment I refuse to believe it's not the same everywhere else. Or that it might change later. Bloody media! (Is there a sarcasm face?)

KevinTheKoala · 18/02/2022 08:51

We are in a red zone, my partners out driving the lorries today and I'm worried about him (he doesn't believe the storm will happen at all). So far its just a bit blustery but it is definitely picking up. Wind speed around 74mph at the moment.

Marylou62 · 18/02/2022 08:51

I can now hear my roof rumbling and getting louder by the minute.. Near Newquay on the north coast . OOh as we speak a huge gust...

MsDastardley · 18/02/2022 08:51

@Cstring

Just thinking the same thing. I’m in the North and cancelled a day out in Manchester due to warnings not to travel and train cancellations. It’s still calm with birds tweeting and cooing outside my window.
You made the right choice. It’s starting to get quite bad here now. I’m stopping in!
Hugasauras · 18/02/2022 08:51

Some of you do realise that it doesn't hit everywhere at once, right? Look at a weather app and it'll show you when the peak is forecast for your area. A lot of places aren't due to peak until late morning/midday so it being calm now is utterly irrelevant Confused Maybe we are just more used to severe weather warnings where I am in north in Scotland but this thread is quite baffling in places!

DingleyDel · 18/02/2022 08:52

Somerset here too. Sunny slightly blustery morning. I’ve cancelled a medical appt because it was a short drive away and will have to wait another month for it. Feel stupid now. Unless it picks up considerably it will have been absolutely ridiculous to close schools here. I know there’s time for things to turn though.

Marylou62 · 18/02/2022 08:52

I'm about 300 feet from the cliffs...

StScholastica · 18/02/2022 08:52

@Onairjunkie

I’m waiting too. Right on the south coast. I’ve left all my large animals (farm) outside as I think they’ll be safer than in the barn as it’s not brick built, but I’ve got the chickens inside for their safety. Their pets, though, so I’d have them on the sofa watching tv in a blanket if I could but their indiscriminate pooing means I’m not allowed. I’ve got a tree surgeon on standby and I’ve cleared the yard of all machinery and things. It was a horrible job so a slightly distorted part of me is hoping the winds come.
Surely your chickens should be inside anyway? DEFRA rules, due to bird flu?
raspberryjamchicken · 18/02/2022 08:52

I'm in the East so right over the other side of the country from where the storm is supposed to start. When I woke up an hour ago there didn't seem to be any wind at all but now it's already noticeably more blustery. It's not supposed to reach here properly until around midday.

AlternativePerspective · 18/02/2022 08:54

I imagine the met office are feeling slightly sheepish today given it’s not even 9:00 yet and most red warnings don’t come into effect until about 9/10 AM I imagine it’s a bit premature to make such statements.

Besides which what do people expect them to say? “No need to worry, just carry on with your day as normal,”? When there could be threats to life and property? They can’t win either way. IF nothing was predicted and we had a storm there would be outcry.

Surely rather than berating the met office for predicting the storm people should be glad if it turns out to not be as bad as they said, rather than if they’d just said nothing and things turned out worse?

lupinlass · 18/02/2022 08:54

Not much happening in Oxfordshire Confused

Marylou62 · 18/02/2022 08:54

some loud bangs in the garden but we battened down yesterday..hope its not the guttering.

etopp · 18/02/2022 08:55

@GirlInACountrySong

Typical media over hyping things

And a storm warning is just that, a warning. But people seem to be enjoying the drama and more reasons to stay at home

This.
Marylou62 · 18/02/2022 08:55

10 am forecast

Where is this storm then?
alloalloallo · 18/02/2022 08:56

I’m on the south coast.

It was super calm here until about an hour ago when the wind has really picked up.

We’ve got a red weather warning from 10am - 3pm and we’re expecting the worst of it about 12 so plenty of time for things to change

Clawdy · 18/02/2022 08:56

Sun and slightly breezy in Manchester.

Marylou62 · 18/02/2022 08:56

Try again

Where is this storm then?
raspberryjamchicken · 18/02/2022 08:58

Just seen that the red warning has been extended to parts of the South East for later today. It was only amber yesterday.

glassn · 18/02/2022 08:59

Well, we're south east and one of the large trees in our garden has already come down...

itsgettingweird · 18/02/2022 08:59

Hampshire coast here.

As calm and eerie as anything at 4am.

Wind started picking up about an hour or so ago but nothing beyond very windy yet.

We are expecting the worst about 10am and onwards.

Our council has closed all schools so I'm thinking it's actually going to be pretty bad. They don't do that and out a red warning out unless there is real concern.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 18/02/2022 08:59

Daffodils are down. Repeat. Daffodils are down.

OhWhyNot · 18/02/2022 08:59

I think many people enjoy the drama of a red weather alert and are a bit disappointed it was more dramatic

Adds a bit of excitement into life which is quite boring at the moment

clairethewitch70 · 18/02/2022 08:59

I live in South Wales, in the red zone. In woods with huge oaks very close. It’s windy but seen way worse.

StrongSunglasses · 18/02/2022 08:59

You can move this map to U.K./your area and zoom in and see the wind in real time (apologies if this has already been shared upthread)

TurkeyRoastvBubbleandSqueek · 18/02/2022 09:00

I'm in the North East, but inland. It has been blustery all night, and is still blustery. As far as I know we haven't had a red warning, so I am hopeful that it won't get worse - but I'm staying in, just in case. My thoughts are with all of you who may get the really bad weather, please try to stay safe, by being sensible!
