… if you are married 20+ years do you still do valentines?

Just curious if it is something that people still do having been together a long time? On one level I understand it’s a marketing ploy. However, I do also take it as a reminder for me to be thankful for my kind and wonderful partner. Maybe that’s just me, because aware I’m not always the most thoughtful a lot of the time …

Just a takeaway and a card, my husband likes to do it. X

2pinkginsplease · 11/02/2022 22:55

Been together 26 years and married nearly 22 and haven’t done valentines for many many years.

We don’t need one day to tell each other I love you!

I see it more for teenagers and people who are in new relationships.

MuffinStrops · 11/02/2022 22:55

No. It’s a pointless marketing exercise. We used to before we got married but not anymore.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 11/02/2022 22:55

We will have been married nearly 30 years this year.

Mo1911 · 11/02/2022 22:56

We haven't even done wedding anniversaries in goodness knows how many years so valentines doesn't even register I'm afraid. 😄

sadpapercourtesan · 11/02/2022 22:56

We do, because DH is a soppy bastard Grin

Valentine's Day is also his birthday, so we sort of compete over who makes the most fuss. The result is far too many presents, daft Valentine's cards and flowers and shit everywhere, and lots of "no, YOU ought to choose what movie we watch/dinner we have, because it's Valentine's Day/your birthday"

I suspect we are very annoying to others. We have a macho teenager who tends to hang around long enough to hoover up his share of the birthday breakfast and hand over his present before disappearing for the day and leaving us to our nonsense.

Chely · 11/02/2022 22:57

I got dh some chocolates, protein shakes/bars and a card. I didn't want to bother but he said he'd done something for me, been together almost 18 years.

QueenofLouisiana · 11/02/2022 22:57

Yes we are going out for dinner on Saturday. DH recently got a new job so we can’t go on Monday (I’ve got a posh meal deal ordered Grin ). We’ve been together 25 years, married for 23.

MerryPoppings · 11/02/2022 22:57

I don't really like the whole thing but we will be using it as an excuse to eat nice food and have a bottle of wine on a Monday night Smile

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/02/2022 22:57

No but we never did. We like each other every day.

5foot5 · 11/02/2022 22:58

We do.

We got married on Valentines Day in 1987 so rhs year will be our 35th anniversary. We always send each other a Valentines card and anniversary card.

Mind you we long since gave up on the idea of going out for a nice meal for our anniversary. Impossible to get a table!

Peanutgurgle · 11/02/2022 22:58

Nope. We do nothing.

Cornishclio · 11/02/2022 22:58

No, not for many years thank goodness. Married 40 years.

Holothane · 11/02/2022 22:58

I don’t care this year he’s brought me treats trying to make up for last month but I’m not doing cards this year he’s got appointments so I’ll say just didn’t get around to it. I simply don’t want one this year.

Highfivemum · 11/02/2022 22:59

35 years and yes of course. We don’t do the market ploy stuff but we do treat each other. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

PussInBin20 · 11/02/2022 22:59

We will have an M&S dine in for two.

San141 · 11/02/2022 22:59

We bought the exact same card for our first valentine day together (I love you type thing) so decided that was it!! We had both gone round 15 shops and still chose identical cards

SolemnlySwear2010 · 11/02/2022 22:59

We have only been married for 10 years - but never 'do' valentines eg cards, gifts etc. We do always get a meal deal from M&S / Morrisons etc and have a lovely dinner with wine - but just because its a good deal Grin

Mybumlooksbig · 11/02/2022 23:01

Nope...

saleorbouy · 11/02/2022 23:01

Never done valentines it's just become Americanised and another commercial excuse between Christmas and Easter.
We acknowledge our love and affection in other ways during the year with small gestures, gifts or treats as and when we see and feel them.
You can guarantee that a Valentines meal out will be rushed and with poor service.

Faevern · 11/02/2022 23:02

Yes every year for over 30 years.

HeadNorth · 11/02/2022 23:02

Together 30 years, married 28. Of course I get flowers, chocs and a card on valentines. I bake him a cake. Last year we bought each other practically the same card. We love each other.

Bloodybridget · 11/02/2022 23:05

Yes, always give each other some kind of card, although not usually one sold as SVD. Sometimes home made; I can be quite inventive! Not presents, but I try to make a nice supper. We're in our 22nd year.

BTYU · 11/02/2022 23:05

No

AugustRose · 11/02/2022 23:05

Together 30 years, married 10 and I don't think we every have done Valentine's - maybe when were were first together and I was still a late teen.

But, my mum and stepdad still do cards and they've been together 21 years.
