To think there is an appalling lack of comprehension on these boards?

DijfunvKd · 11/02/2022 16:53

Honestly, the lack of basic comprehension skills from grown adults is mind blowing when you read the AIBU board.

OP 'I have £100 left until Monday. All my bills are paid, plenty of food in, AIBU to splash out on a new dress?'

Replies 'YABU to spend so flippantly when you can't feed your children'.

'£100 isn't very much, OP. Will you be able to afford your bills if you buy a new dress?'

Or

OP 'I am going to a wedding in June and staying in an Air b&b. I am single and don't have any children. My brother is also staying in the air b&b, along with his wife and two children. There is no one else staying with us. He wants to split the cost of the accommodation and food 50/50. I think I should pay less. AIBU?'

Responses - 'YABU. Presumably your husband and kids will be staying too'

'Who is staying in the house OP? YABU if you are also bringing your kids.'

'When you have children OP you will understand why your brother doesn't want to leave them at home just to go to a party.'

Why can't people read and understand what the OP is saying without having to make up and invent half the story, or alternatively ask things which are quite blatantly obviously written in the OP?

@BrightYellowDaffodil

Maybe a reading comprehension test could be part of the signing up criteria? Name, email address, and read-this-text-and-correctly-answer-some-questions-to-show-you-have-a-fucking-brain.

BTW, OP, you are very VERY much not unreasonable.

Yes! Read this short passage and answer the following questions
  1. Should the OP LTB?
  2. Should the OP buy the dress in blue or green? And will the colour suit her brother?
  3. Should the OP cancel the cheque?

@EmmaH2022

Glad you started this thread

Yesterday every thread I was on, I was like "read the OP posts". I don't get it.

In that situation you should just snap and fart.
saraclara · 12/02/2022 23:58

@GiantHaystacks2021

Yep.

Some punters on here can't read or spell.

It's not spelling or reading to know what words say that's the issue. Some people on here have dyxlexia, but can make perfectly sensible posts. Over on OP's other thread, there are many, many people posting in well structured and perfectly spelled replies, but where they've missed the point entirely or simply haven't been arsed to read the OP's posts before making up a load of old tosh.

I don't want people with literacy issues being driven off here by grammar and spelling pedants, but I do want people to take the trouble to understand OPs posts properly and actually answer sensibly.

@Forgotthebins

Isn’t it awful when people don’t agree with you OP. They must be very stupid.
Thank you for agreeing with me so wholeheartedly.

I do think you’re a bit unreasonable for thinking that everyone on this this thread is very stupid though. Also, if you had kids, you’d know that not everyone has time to read posts, therefore YABVU.

'See all' which enables posters to read all of the OP's posts is actually one of the most useful things MN have introduced in quite some time, imo.

It doesn't solve the issue of posters answering questions that the OP didn't ask, of course, or taking their own twist on something and berating the OP.

TootsAtOwls · 13/02/2022 09:13

People are just lazy readers (and I'm including myself in that). I've learnt that when texting friends to meet up, I should never say "I'm free any day except Tuesday" as they will inevitably reply "great, I can do Tuesday too". It's really tedious!

Parpophone · 13/02/2022 09:15

@RachelGreeneGreep

It also doesn't solve the problem of posters who name change after their initial post and then nobody can easily see any updates by them (clicking "see all" will say that there are no more posts).

Whitefire · 13/02/2022 09:55

There is one now. Irrelevant comment, then "I haven't time to read the thread." Just don't comment then.

lljkk · 13/02/2022 10:17

I am guilty of being outright wrong & not reading carefully. So naturally I can forgive those things.

It's just the irrelevant projection that drives me batty.

OP: "My husband is hiding his phone and won't let me see it ! Where is it? Why is he hiding it?"

Poster1: "He's having an affair for sure."

Poster2: "Agreed. My husband was having an affair (long story, DV). Men are all misogynist predators. LTB."

OP: "He can't be having an affair - "

Poster3: "Oh darling, poor you in such denial. It's the fate of women to be downtrodden saints. Blame the patriarchy."

OP: "DH has TBI from a terrible accident, he uses the phone to play games. I think he might have tucked it down his nappy."

Poster3: "Not on OP! You left out key details."

Poster1: "But he could be having an affair, an EA, with someone else who has TBI and wears nappies. Maybe he's just faking the TBI. The ultimate cocklodger!"

Poster2: "I told you men are all evil predators."

I agree 'see all' is great. I don't know if people are unaware of it or simply ignore it.

There's a thread in Active at the moment where the OP updated three years on. There's still lots of posters replying to her original post...

saraclara · 13/02/2022 10:30

I wish that MN could make the 'see all' button more prominent. Larger print, a different colour, highlighting...any or all of those might make it more noticeable to those who seem unaware of it.

Jedsnewstar · 13/02/2022 10:36

LTB

SecretSpAD · 13/02/2022 10:48

@BadNomad

OP, when you have children you will understand why you can't just spent £1000 on a dress. In fact you should pay the full B&B cost and offer to babysit for your sister so she can have a break. It's hard being a mother.
And I hope you realise that breastfed babies can't be parted from their mother for, like, 18 years.
BuddhaForMary · 13/02/2022 11:37

Just yesterday..

OP writes post including the words "she has her own lovely home but she stays with us every weekend."

Next 12 posters: Is it every weekend OP? Does she have her own home?

Me: Jesus wept READ THE OP

CarlaH · 13/02/2022 11:38

Most people want to talk not listen. You see it all the time in real life with people whose eyes glaze over as you speak because they want you to shut up so they can carry on talking.

They aren't interested in RTFT or even the OP's posts because all they want is to make their own point whether it is relevant or not.

Yep. That sums MN up, really.

Yes!

I wish it practically popped out of the screen as soon as a thread is opened.

Migrainesbythedozen · 13/02/2022 13:21

On a thread about a woman being unhappy her partner tried anal when she was half asleep and against her consent, a poster kept saying 'maybe it wasn't anal, it's just that he approached from behind', DESPITE the OP saying not once but twice that he admitted he pushed into her anus. Posters simply do not read the OP's posts AT ALL.

Notjustanymum · 13/02/2022 17:37

It is odd also, that the number of threads demonstrating a general lack of basic comprehension skills is almost equal to the number of threads complaining/judging about what other people post in reply to these. 😂😂😂

If only that were true.
