To think there is an appalling lack of comprehension on these boards?

DijfunvKd · 11/02/2022 16:53

Honestly, the lack of basic comprehension skills from grown adults is mind blowing when you read the AIBU board.

OP 'I have £100 left until Monday. All my bills are paid, plenty of food in, AIBU to splash out on a new dress?'

Replies 'YABU to spend so flippantly when you can't feed your children'.

'£100 isn't very much, OP. Will you be able to afford your bills if you buy a new dress?'

Or

OP 'I am going to a wedding in June and staying in an Air b&b. I am single and don't have any children. My brother is also staying in the air b&b, along with his wife and two children. There is no one else staying with us. He wants to split the cost of the accommodation and food 50/50. I think I should pay less. AIBU?'

Responses - 'YABU. Presumably your husband and kids will be staying too'

'Who is staying in the house OP? YABU if you are also bringing your kids.'

'When you have children OP you will understand why your brother doesn't want to leave them at home just to go to a party.'

Why can't people read and understand what the OP is saying without having to make up and invent half the story, or alternatively ask things which are quite blatantly obviously written in the OP?

AIBU?

OP posts:
TheLoupGarou · 11/02/2022 19:06

Why don't people discuss these things before they have children??

Useranon1 · 11/02/2022 19:08

I almost started this exact thread yesterday! Drafted it in my head multiple times. It did seem especially bad in the last few days and its really fecking irritating!

It's one thing not to read the thread, but at least read the OP! If you've got time to comment you've got time to read.

ValBiro · 11/02/2022 19:09

@DoctorSnortles

I agree with *@AllOfUsAreDead*

It's not fashionable to say so, but lots of people are stupid.

This gave me a wry smile, thank you @DoctorSnortles! You live up to your username.
dollymuchymuchness · 11/02/2022 19:10

I'd get some naice ham next time, far better than the cheap stuff.

BuddhaForMary · 11/02/2022 19:14

Often pretty flabbergasted at the comprehension on this site. I'm one of those annoying posters who says 'did you even bother to read OPs post/update???' until someone gets sick of me Grin

OhFuckBloodyHell · 11/02/2022 19:15

Hmm Hmm I've read your previous threads OP, where you CLEARLY ask for DC friendly cheap days out. So you've obviously got quintuplets. You should be paying your DB to stay with you, frankly.

JudgeJ · 11/02/2022 19:22

@EishetChayil

Since the average reading age in the UK is 9, it's not surprising that a lot of posters have lower comprehension skills.
The initial writing skills are often the problem, long rambling posts with little or no punctuation, paragraphs etc etc., very difficult to read. I realise that some people are under stress when writing and that apparently using a phone is difficult but a little proof reading would be useful.
hugr · 11/02/2022 19:22

@NightmareSlashDelightful

To be fair we were taught the reading age thing in GCSE English

Grida · 11/02/2022 19:25

I think my comprehension skills are brilliant but then 80% of people think their intelligence is above average.

Leftbutcameback · 11/02/2022 19:26

Part of the problem is not being able to edit posts - I do the same all the time on FB but can go back and correct!

dollymuchymuchness · 11/02/2022 19:27

Many people don't take Mumsnet too seriously. For me it's just a bit of a distraction and entertainment. I can't be arsed to spend too much time and effort reading every fucking word on here.

Might I suggest that not taking this forum too seriously might help @DijfunvKd?

Well we did have an Education Secretary who wanted every child to do better than average.

That and endless impatient scrolling.

@isthismylifenow

I quite liked the first dress.
But it will upstage the bride!!

A great asset to any teacher of Statistics though!

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 11/02/2022 19:34

@BlackberrySky

Another one today. OP clearly stated her DS was 3 and she was thinking ahead to when he starts school. It was a question about unauthorised absence when he reaches the qualify age. Cue loads of responses about how she can't be fined as DS is only 3 etc etc. Read the post people!
I was going to mention that thread and one of the replies was from an education welfare officer who clearly didn't understand the meaning of a hypothetical situation.
fenellastripe · 11/02/2022 19:35

YANBU. People project their own life experiences onto the subject. If it's a controversial topic people will have entrenched/strong views and these will override a close reading of the original posting. We all do it to different degrees but it's incredibly frustrating when people don't read the OP properly.

Phenomenology · 11/02/2022 19:43

On a thread recently by the time I had read the whole thread I had misremembered the age of the child Blush As soon as I posted I realised my mistake and wrote a quick post correcting myself.
The funny thing was that so many posts after mine referred to the child being the incorrect age that I had first put. Oops!

DogDaysNeverEnd · 11/02/2022 19:46

I don't know what you mean

tentative3 · 11/02/2022 19:48

What saddens me most is it has brought me to the point where I honestly can't tell if two of the posts on here are genuine or not. I really hope they're not but I fear the worst.

I think that’s something only someone who has give birth could know OP

WingingItEveryDay7 · 11/02/2022 19:57

I have just stumbled across this thread having just responded to your other one.... Completely understand your frustration!! I see it on so many threads, I get frustrated on the OPs behalf everytime 🙈 x

SookieHouseboat · 11/02/2022 19:57

I have a basket of flip flops.
