To think there is an appalling lack of comprehension on these boards?

Honestly, the lack of basic comprehension skills from grown adults is mind blowing when you read the AIBU board.

OP 'I have £100 left until Monday. All my bills are paid, plenty of food in, AIBU to splash out on a new dress?'

Replies 'YABU to spend so flippantly when you can't feed your children'.

'£100 isn't very much, OP. Will you be able to afford your bills if you buy a new dress?'

Or

OP 'I am going to a wedding in June and staying in an Air b&b. I am single and don't have any children. My brother is also staying in the air b&b, along with his wife and two children. There is no one else staying with us. He wants to split the cost of the accommodation and food 50/50. I think I should pay less. AIBU?'

Responses - 'YABU. Presumably your husband and kids will be staying too'

'Who is staying in the house OP? YABU if you are also bringing your kids.'

'When you have children OP you will understand why your brother doesn't want to leave them at home just to go to a party.'

Why can't people read and understand what the OP is saying without having to make up and invent half the story, or alternatively ask things which are quite blatantly obviously written in the OP?

Have you cancelled the cheque OP?

midsomermurderess · 12/02/2022 10:54

@Whypaytherent

Yes, and the most worrying thing about this is that these posters could be called for jury service.
And are probably also raising children. God help them.
2X4B523P · 12/02/2022 11:00

@Bordois

Have you cancelled the cheque OP?
Have they actually admitted to feeding your cat though?
RachelGreeneGreep · 12/02/2022 11:56

So you begrudge your brother the 100 quid for the dress? YABU. Grin When you have children yourself, you will understand...

And yes you absolutely should split the cost since you are bringing along your DH and your children.

Next!
Wink

@RightOnTheEdge

YANBU! It drives me mad OP. I guess they are the same people who only read the headlines on Facebook and start ranting nonsense in the comments without reading the actual articles.
Yes. And another on Facebook, can someone recommend say a plumber, for example. If John Smith Ltd is already recommended why not either agree with the post, or say nothing.

Instead you have
John Smith Ltd
John Smith Ltd
John Smith Ltd
John Smith Ltd
John Smith Ltd

And then another numpty weeks later will resurrect the post to say
John Smith Ltd

Maybe a spa day would help?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/02/2022 14:58

“Does anyone like the name Eric (for example) for a boy?” And there’s nine pages of “my son is called something entirely different to that”

I love it how OP will ask "Your thoughts on Harry? It's our favourite so far, but just wondered if it's a bit overused right now." Some will say "Great, solid traditional name - go for it; " others will say "Lovely, but I'd put Henry or Harold on the birth certificate to give him more options when he's older;" you'll also have "I do know so many boys called Harry - how about Harvey or Larry?" - and then the inevitable "Have you considered Philip instead?" Grin

If it's your last £100.
I'd save it.

Maybe a reading comprehension test could be part of the signing up criteria? Name, email address, and read-this-text-and-correctly-answer-some-questions-to-show-you-have-a-fucking-brain.

BTW, OP, you are very VERY much not unreasonable.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 12/02/2022 20:35

I mean, really. It's been pissing me off for months and is a hill I will die on, especially as I was "still shaking my head"ed at yesterday for apparently saying something which I categorically did not.

StickyToffeePuddingAndIceCream · 12/02/2022 20:37

Maybe if they didn't drip feed over 35 posts and hide some basic information in their original post it'd save people having to read 3000 posts and save the op getting annoyed when people respond having not read all 3000 drip drip posts. Just saying 😉. Have you decided if you have kids or not yet 😆?

Have you read the full thread? Or even the OPs posts? 😂
StickyToffeePuddingAndIceCream · 12/02/2022 20:44

@babahotel... nope 😆 I was referencing ops post yesterday that they got all ranty about people not reading her 35 posts of her being obtuse.

I see this all the time on this board and it pisses me off. I nearly made a thread on it once. Mumsnet is not really the same; newcomers have been a bit iffy LOL.

The title of the thread could give ALL the information and the first reply will ask some shit that’s already in the title. It’s maddening.

Noisyneighneigh · 12/02/2022 20:54

@WomblingWilma

This drives me mad! MN needs to introduce a reading comprehension and grammar test before allowing registration. With perhaps a 100 word test post? If prospective users don’t post in paragraphs, they should also fail!

I also hate it on threads, especially on AIBU, where someone responds with a nasty post after reasonable replies which opens the floodgates for similar horrible posters to have the confidence to crawl out from under their stones and pile on too.

Your post is kind and inclusive.
Noisyneighneigh · 12/02/2022 20:59

@Hippopotas

I can feed 45 people with a chicken and still have enough leftover for 2 weeks of dinners.
We spend £50 on food a week for 4 kids 2 adults and a dog and cat. We eat exceedingly well and that £50 includes 2 bottles of wine for the weekend.
Seymour5 · 12/02/2022 21:00

@DijfunvKd thankyou for this thread. It’s just so true! And some of the comments really made me laugh.

BuddhaForMary · 12/02/2022 21:04

I've seen this on at least 5 threads in the last few minutes. OP gives as much detail as possible, and then gets asked things that's clearly in the OP! I haven't had my own thread on MN for a while and I've decided I'm gonna just answer with 'if you'd read my post properly you'd know' Grin

TheMullerLightOwl · 12/02/2022 21:05

YABU for making a tiny grammatical error that has no bearing on my understanding of your OP - PS you sound very young! Confused

Lovemydoggie · 12/02/2022 21:05

Yep . Have just changed my user name because I am so fucking irritated !

AutomaticMoon · 12/02/2022 21:17

@TheMullerLightOwl

I posted about the Little Matchstick Girl (potentially) causing my lifelong depression (it probably didn’t, I realised after some lovely replies) and one poster said ‘I always thought it was Little Match Girl’ Hmm 😃

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/02/2022 21:19

Another incredibly irritating one - somebody posts something which is clearly sensitive, or that any foold can see they might not want linked to anything else they've posted. Obvious inference is they've namechanged.

IrksomePoster Interesting first post or Welcome to MN, OP Hmm
