To think there is an appalling lack of comprehension on these boards?

Honestly, the lack of basic comprehension skills from grown adults is mind blowing when you read the AIBU board.

OP 'I have £100 left until Monday. All my bills are paid, plenty of food in, AIBU to splash out on a new dress?'

Replies 'YABU to spend so flippantly when you can't feed your children'.

'£100 isn't very much, OP. Will you be able to afford your bills if you buy a new dress?'

Or

OP 'I am going to a wedding in June and staying in an Air b&b. I am single and don't have any children. My brother is also staying in the air b&b, along with his wife and two children. There is no one else staying with us. He wants to split the cost of the accommodation and food 50/50. I think I should pay less. AIBU?'

Responses - 'YABU. Presumably your husband and kids will be staying too'

'Who is staying in the house OP? YABU if you are also bringing your kids.'

'When you have children OP you will understand why your brother doesn't want to leave them at home just to go to a party.'

Why can't people read and understand what the OP is saying without having to make up and invent half the story, or alternatively ask things which are quite blatantly obviously written in the OP?

AIBU?

OP posts:
DropYourSword · 12/02/2022 00:35

Yeah I see it a lot. It's not as if people have even missed information that the OP has written in later updates - it's stuff right there in the OP!!

Also, people tend to really misinterpret what someone has actually written. I've just seen a spat in another thread because someone said "If I (my emphasis) was in that situation I'd do x" and someone else got very flouncy because she "not everyone is in the position to do that. I can't believe you expect everyone to do that", despite there being no expectation of the sort!

SwissCheeseRentedChildren · 12/02/2022 00:39

I think you only have two options here:

  1. Zoflora;

b) a mumsnet chicken, with steamed vag.

Clarinet1 · 12/02/2022 00:46

This thread has had me screaming in the Sistine Chapel!

Changechangychange · 12/02/2022 01:08

@thepeopleversuswork

YANBU but I’m with *@Marchingredsoldiers*

I find it worse when someone picks up on some irrelevant tangent in the post.

eg: OP: “My husband beat me because I spent £10 on a Gregg’s sausage roll. Should I LTB?”

Poster: “You should be able to get five Greggs sausage rolls for a tenner”.

Can’t See The Wood For The Trees syndrome. It’s so irritating.

Oh god this! And then a massive derail while people argue about whether Greggs sausage rolls cost £2 or £2.25. Maybe it’s both! Maybe you all go to different Greggs branches and their prices are different!
Echobelly · 12/02/2022 01:12

Yeah, I have even sometimes started threads and then put an explicit statement in my first post to say 'I am not saying and don't in any way mean to imply I believe X and Y'

Of course, every time I do that, I know full well that several people will reply 'Oh, so you're saying you think X and Y!'

chompp · 12/02/2022 01:23

Buy the dress OP!

Wingedharpy · 12/02/2022 01:28

You need to see a Doctor about the steamed vag , @SwissCheeseRentedChildren.
Deffo not right.

I'm only here for the typosWink

AutomaticMoon · 12/02/2022 01:40

You’re going to look like a slattern in that dress, OP.

AutomaticMoon · 12/02/2022 01:46

Oh no, I must be doing this wrong because mine says it’s a premium feature to see all posts from OP.

Feedingthebirds1 · 12/02/2022 02:08

OP - I've been married to DH for five years. Six months ago he admitted that he already has two children from a previous relationship. It was the first I knew of them. Now he spends all his time with them and never wants to do anything with me or our DC. AIBU?

98% of posters - you knew he had kids when you married him.

BadNomad · 12/02/2022 02:56

OP, when you have children you will understand why you can't just spent £1000 on a dress. In fact you should pay the full B&B cost and offer to babysit for your sister so she can have a break. It's hard being a mother.

AutomaticMoon · 12/02/2022 02:59

Could it be baby brain? I read that babies will suck the cholesterol from the mother’s brain or I’m not actually sure what they’re meant to be sucking out but apparently they do. The cleverness and nutrition or something.

And anyway, that’s what you get for having children with this vile man.

Rudeppl · 12/02/2022 03:02

YESSS! The amount of MN users claiming to be middle class and can barely string a sentence together.

AutomaticMoon · 12/02/2022 03:03

£1000000 is nothing to spend on a dress, not if you want lasting quality, that is.
Topseyt · 12/02/2022 03:52

I agree, OP

Basic comprehension skills often seem very poor. I end up feeling that it just makes people seem extremely thick.

Chilesstanton · 12/02/2022 04:18

YWBVU to buy the dress

PhryneFisher · 12/02/2022 04:20

It’s the sort of thing that drives me mad too, but I think it’s just a sign of society and social media today.
Like when you get someone on a local board who says “Can anyone recommend a Chinese restaurant?” And 50 people say “It’s not Chinese but I like such and such a place…”
That wasn’t the question.

Or “Does anyone like the name Eric (for example) for a boy?” And there’s nine pages of “my son is called something entirely different to that” or worse “I don’t have a son, but my daughter is this…”
So what, no-one asked that.

I think it’s basically information overload and people don’t have time to take everything in.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 12/02/2022 04:30

Yep.

Some punters on here can't read or spell.

isthismylifenow · 12/02/2022 05:41

@OnaBegonia

My favourite is the current post about mother of the groom(gay wedding:2 men) and god knows how many said 'you'll upstage the bride' ffs 🙄
🤣

I think she should ask her son 😉

FireMeetGasoline · 12/02/2022 06:15

I think you have 2 options here OP. Buy the dress and wear it at the wedding, but post a pic on here first so everyone can say how hideous it is, even though you love it, or save the £100 to pay your share for the Air bnb.

This post made me really laugh. Thanks.

user1498572889 · 12/02/2022 06:29

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea
😂 this made me laugh.

GingerScallop · 12/02/2022 06:33

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

It's precisely because of the appalling lack of comprehensives that too many parents feel pressured into paying for private school if their children can't get into the local grammar.
all the puns!!! 🤣🤣🤣
FiftyshadesofSueGray · 12/02/2022 06:34

I think you should have a quiet word with the Mother of the Bride OP. You need to be careful not to upstage her either.

Leilala · 12/02/2022 06:44

Yes, and I actually find it quite sad. However I am here for entertainment so it’s part of it.

I sadly think it reflects the whole population.

Scouting DM (again for the comments section)

Article about QC being removed from BA flight after arguing with staff when his nanny could not be seated in business despite booking her a business class ticket.

Top comment:

“ Only one thing left out of this article dm and the single most important: did they pay for business for the nanny? If not then I'm glad he was thrown off.”

It’s there…. If you read (and comprehend) the text!

Hmm
dapsnotplimsolls · 12/02/2022 06:46

You need a penguin bollard.
