To think there is an appalling lack of comprehension on these boards?

DijfunvKd · 11/02/2022 16:53

Honestly, the lack of basic comprehension skills from grown adults is mind blowing when you read the AIBU board.

OP 'I have £100 left until Monday. All my bills are paid, plenty of food in, AIBU to splash out on a new dress?'

Replies 'YABU to spend so flippantly when you can't feed your children'.

'£100 isn't very much, OP. Will you be able to afford your bills if you buy a new dress?'

Or

OP 'I am going to a wedding in June and staying in an Air b&b. I am single and don't have any children. My brother is also staying in the air b&b, along with his wife and two children. There is no one else staying with us. He wants to split the cost of the accommodation and food 50/50. I think I should pay less. AIBU?'

Responses - 'YABU. Presumably your husband and kids will be staying too'

'Who is staying in the house OP? YABU if you are also bringing your kids.'

'When you have children OP you will understand why your brother doesn't want to leave them at home just to go to a party.'

Why can't people read and understand what the OP is saying without having to make up and invent half the story, or alternatively ask things which are quite blatantly obviously written in the OP?

AIBU?

Yes, and the most worrying thing about this is that these posters could be called for jury service.

Zonder · 12/02/2022 07:01

@EishetChayil

Since the average reading age in the UK is 9, it's not surprising that a lot of posters have lower comprehension skills.
Not according to the Literacy Trust UK who say 15 % of adults are at or below 9-11 years.

In England, adult literacy is often referred to in terms of ‘levels’ – for example, a 2011 government survey of adult literacy skills found that 14.9% (or 1 in 7) of adults in England have literacy levels at or below Entry Level 3, which is equivalent to the literacy skills expected of a nine to 11-year-old.

@Whypaytherent

Shock

Let hope you never be accused of a crime then!

It’s also shocking that these people are allowed to vote. Confused

Linguini · 12/02/2022 07:07

I have two cats staying at my house, I luffs them bit I won't bring them to a wedding that would be ridiculous!

Leilala · 12/02/2022 07:07

*let hope to never be accused of a crime

…. Damn autocorrect (that never actually corrects)

Hopeisnotastrategy · 12/02/2022 07:12

@Yuckypretty

I think you should LTB and then bleach your skirting boards
I read, "....and then bleach your...", and mistakenly assumed I knew what was coming next!

🤣🤣🤣

ivykaty44 · 12/02/2022 07:13

It’s very windy out, best wear a coat to the wedding

MimiDaisy11 · 12/02/2022 07:16

I agree OP. I don’t have many of my own posts but when I do post I try to just ignore the people who didn’t read it properly. There’s no point trying to teach them reading comprehension.

I guess responses must have annoyed me a little as I remember them.

I posted about a baby name once asking for opinions. I knew it had a connection to a popular book series and stated that I was aware of it but not bothered by it and that since the books were popular I knew it wasn’t going away. Of course I received a few replies telling me I was crazy if I thought people wouldn’t make the connection or if I thought the book series wasn’t here to stay.

It’s not just responses though as lots of people put up original posts without seemingly having reread what they’ve written. They often suffer from the curse of knowledge, assuming we know details of their lives.

2X4B523P · 12/02/2022 07:18

OP, still waiting on the diagram you said you’ll post…

Gj63 · 12/02/2022 07:22

Cancel the cheque!

MrsPuddle · 12/02/2022 07:24

@dollymuchymuchness

Many people don't take Mumsnet too seriously. For me it's just a bit of a distraction and entertainment. I can't be arsed to spend too much time and effort reading every fucking word on here.

Might I suggest that not taking this forum too seriously might help @DijfunvKd?

And when posters undermine your relevant feelings and your post entirely. Really patronising.😜
PickledOnionSandwich · 12/02/2022 07:27

I compare it to Chinese whispers (or whatever the PC term is) By the time is gets to page 23, the story has often got so distorted that if some lazy fucker only reads the last few responses then they’re also going to put something irrelevant. And so it continues…😂

Oblomov22 · 12/02/2022 07:27

Some of the replies are really funny.
LTB and bleach the skirting boards.
Buy your brother the dress. Grin

Sometimes I skim read OP. Hardly a crime. Mostly a massive drip feed later on pisses me off. Shall I LTB? Posts later, he hit me. HmmFFS.

isthismylifenow · 12/02/2022 07:32

@Gj63

Cancel the cheque!
The updated version is...

There is no bride!

longwayoff · 12/02/2022 07:46

You may be right OP but nobody's going to receive a Certificate of Merit for fully digesting every post then answering with a measured and carefully considered response. I think you're missing the point of taking part in idle chat.

2X4B523P · 12/02/2022 07:49

@Gj63

Cancel the cheque!
OP stated she paid cash.
FantasticFebruary · 12/02/2022 07:49

Yep, it is dreadful!!

BarbaraofSeville · 12/02/2022 08:00

Oh I now need to read the new DS wedding dress thread because I didn't see that coming .

Sometimes the title and the OP don't quite match and I think a lot of people only read the title and answer the question directly as in 'what would they do' not what is best for the OP and don't look at the OP to see that they're actually looking for help with quite a complex issue.

So the title might say 'what would you do with £50k' and you'd get lots of posts where people talk about getting another BTL or giving it to their adult DCs for house deposits, but in the OP you'll see a time poor recently divorced mother of preschoolers trying to decide whether she should move areas so she could afford to buy, retrain or use the money to pay childcare until they get to primary school. Yet people pipe up with 'get another BTL' as if that's the thing she needs right now.

YANBU OP and this thread has clarified something for me, it's not just Mumsnet, it's more widespread than that. I have to arrange mostly online meetings with work clients and because 80% of the time I sit at a desk I have a lot more flexibility than them, who typically manage maintenance teams in factories and work shifts, often on the shop floor, have other meetings, sometimes I need to talk to 2 of them etc.

So I'll send them an email, saying we can do a Teams call any day next week except Tuesday and ask them to work out when they are free and send me a link for the call.

90% of the time, I'll get a Teams link FOR TUESDAY, the only day I said I couldn't do Confused.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/02/2022 08:15

I'd get in quick with the dress thread. I've just suggested to the OP to get the thread deleted as she is obviously not just fed up with the numpties replying now but it's upset her, and I'm fuming. Gratuitous nastiness is really uncalled for.

Hippopotas · 12/02/2022 08:20

I can feed 45 people with a chicken and still have enough leftover for 2 weeks of dinners.

EatYourVegetables · 12/02/2022 08:26

I didn’t read the full thread so don’t know if it’s been mentioned, but it’s also annoying when posters jump in and comment without having read the full thread.

Ciaram55 · 12/02/2022 08:30

It's all about the people who want to argue or often just want to be nasty.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/02/2022 08:31

@EatYourVegetables yes, because they invariably come up with a really obvious comment that only an idiot would think no-one else has already posted, and doesn't really need saying again for the 236th time, hence all the 'cancel the cheque' and now 'there is no bride' comments.

Hesma · 12/02/2022 08:47

LTB

RightOnTheEdge · 12/02/2022 09:06

YANBU! It drives me mad OP.
I guess they are the same people who only read the headlines on Facebook and start ranting nonsense in the comments without reading the actual articles.
