If you have not done today's Wordle 9/2/22 Read no further you have been warned!!!

*Semi lighthearted.

What do you think am I being unreasonable for thinking the 5 letter word choice for today is controversial. The creator of the game is apparently English and it has a co.uk address.

@Bintymcbintface

UK based should use UK spellings I agree, I got it but it irked me greatly
As it's a global phenomenon, it would be best to steer away from words which are spelled differently in US and British English.

There are plenty of 5 letter words around.

SpaceDetective · 09/02/2022 07:47

4/6 - after my first 3 guesses I was struggling to come up with any word at all that would fit with previous guesses. The US spelling was the only word I could go with really

OnlyTheTitosaurusOfTheIceberg · 09/02/2022 07:47

@RosesAndHellebores

Got it in 4 but it was hard. Have none of you ever run Mucrosoft spell checker?
Have you? 😂
MrsMop1964 · 09/02/2022 07:47

Thanks, the thread title gave me a clue. I remember the furor/furore on Twitter last time this happened!

Shiningpath · 09/02/2022 07:51

I was more irritated when it insisted Tudor was not a word.

anotherbrewplease · 09/02/2022 07:53

Thank you kind hearted people - no way I would have got that one without even more faffing.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 09/02/2022 07:54

@cookiemonster2468

Wordle has used American spellings before.

As long as you know them it's fine. The creator lives in the US.

This.

I did today's wordle having seen just the title of this thread and was expecting it to be swear word or insult. I was very confused to find it was just a bog standard normal word so came here to find out what the controversy is.

anotherbrewplease · 09/02/2022 07:55

@BestKnitterInScotland

Grin Grin

He can do what the heck he wants - it's his invention. We are just along for the ride and have to suck it up.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/02/2022 07:55

I got it in two but only because I got caught out the last time they went for US spelling and was ready for it.

DaggerIsle · 09/02/2022 07:59

When I saw the thread title I started with woman... Grin

Ended up getting it in 3

Peridot1 · 09/02/2022 07:59

@flindorama @Rshard - the Wordle app is different. Was around before Josh Wardle set up his game as far as I know. So it’s confusing. The Wordle puzzle in question here isn’t an app. It’s a website “power language.co.uk”.

ThatPosterIsSoRight · 09/02/2022 08:02

Got it in 2. I knew it was American spellings, fair enough.

ThatPosterIsSoRight · 09/02/2022 08:03

I’m overjoyed actually as my mum definitely won’t beat me today

BlueBeeSpots · 09/02/2022 08:05

I had to Google the word after to check the spelling! Took me ages today, 6 attempts

Whiskyinajar · 09/02/2022 08:06

I got it in four but was lucky with the first word I used which gave me the last two letters. I always thought it was an American based game so guessed it was going to be a word with an American spelling.

LosingTheWill2022 · 09/02/2022 08:07

The settings use American spelling so it shouldn't be a surprise that the game does.

DwangelaForever · 09/02/2022 08:08

I guessed it in 2 cause of people complaining about it being an American spelling on twitter. Second time this has happened since I've played.

WhatsitWiggle · 09/02/2022 08:08

Took me 4 goes, I hadn't realised there were US spellings so once I'd worked out the placement of the vowels and last letter I was mentally filling in the remaining letters. When the penny dropped, I was frustrated.

I agree with whoever said any word that can be spelt differently US/UK English is probably best avoided.

KitKat1985 · 09/02/2022 08:08

This is the greatest controversy since Watergate. I was not amused this morning. Completely ruined my winning streak.

CanofCant · 09/02/2022 08:11

Argh yes OP! I felt the same fury on 12th January when the word was 'favor'.

JuicySatsuma85 · 09/02/2022 08:11

@Donatella

Wordle 235 3/6

⬜⬜🟨🟨⬜
⬜⬜🟨🟨🟩
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

He might be English (hadn't heard that though) but as far as I know he lives in America and created the game for his partner, who may be American. Not sure about the domain name but maybe they have different ones for the different languages? Either way, I can't get worked out about it, I'm sure there are far more users of American English than British English worldwide.

You hugely underestimate how much colonialism Britain was involved in.
DrSbaitso · 09/02/2022 08:12

Anyone who didn’t know Wordle uses American spellings can't have been playing that long.

CPGyellowwallpaper · 09/02/2022 08:13

Definitely unfair to use American spellings

H1Drangea · 09/02/2022 08:14

I was cross , even though I got it 2nd word , It’s an American spelling that I tried because I couldn’t think of any other word that would fit

LadyCatStark · 09/02/2022 08:15

Got it in 3 as I got lucky and got the 2nd and last letter in guesses 1 and 2 so it couldn’t really be anything else. I remembered the American spellings from doing some of the archived ones so I guess it was recently in my mind.
