Should the monarchy end with this queen?

272 replies

ivykaty44 · 06/02/2022 08:30

YABU Charles will be the next king, we can’t pick and choose and the system should go on

YANBU the monarchy should end and we get to vote on a president in future

@GeneLovesJezebel

Can I have a ‘skip Charles as king’ option ?
Why?

What makes you think he'll be a bad king? And what makes you think William would be better?

Confused
Highfivemum · 06/02/2022 15:33

I am proud of the queen. She has served our country so loyally for 70 years. The issue I see is too many hanger ons. No way should the monarch go. The revenue they bring into the country never gets mentioned but why do people from abroad visit London. ??? For the Royals no doubt. Get rid of the dead wood and keep a few. Long live our lovely queen.

00100001 · 06/02/2022 15:33

@EishetChayil

they are basically our pr team

Which is brilliant when you remember that they're all either nonces or layabouts!

Really? They are all either a nonce OR a layabout. Nothing else?

Do grow up.

TheKeatingFive · 06/02/2022 15:36

That's claptrap in fairness 😂

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/02/2022 15:37

I think you'll find it gets mentioned all the time on here, usually with something about them "bringing in far more in tourist revenue than they cost"

Unfortunately this is based on nothing at all, as we see every time someone queries it and there's no answer

Poetrypatty · 06/02/2022 15:56

Grin London having absolutely nothing else to offer and being famous for seeing the Royals out and about

SprayedWithDettol · 06/02/2022 15:58

@GreenWhiteViolet

YANBU. It's outdated and ridiculous. I have some respect for the Queen and her sense of duty, but after she goes, that should be the end of it. All the history and palaces will still be there for the tourists and anyone else who is interested. The monarchy should be a part of our past, not our future.

The 'skip Charles' people are bizarre. That's not how a hereditary monarchy works. You get whoever is next in line, whether you like them or not.

I'm sure if we had a President there would sometimes be someone elected that I don't like or approve of. The difference? It's temporary, and it's democratic. President William? Sure. A million times better than King William. We can vote him out next time if he's terrible.

My thoughts exactly.
Poetrypatty · 06/02/2022 15:59

Obviously people want William to be King

Who wants this? I think there's quite a few who don't want it. Can you imagine him doing the Christmas Day speech for example? Would feel very odd wouldn't it, having a young monarch.

TurquoiseDragon · 06/02/2022 16:04

@Mumoblue

Yes. They should go. We can keep the palaces and tourists will still come. I find it absurd that we have a monarchy in this day and age. Not to mention, are they going to re-mint all the currency to update to Charles? And then again when HE dies? Waste of money.
No, there's a planned programme that replaces money in cycles anyway, they'll just insert Charles's head on the next run.
Daisydoor12 · 06/02/2022 16:05

I think Charles and William’s life have been “geared up” to be king and only right they get the opportunity when it arises. However things could be put in place now to end this out of date practice, George is young enough to have a life not geared towards being a king.

Well that’s been Charles’ plan for decades. So you’ll be a happy customer when he becomes King, at least. Smile
Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/02/2022 16:09

Why is there only conversation about this now. I always thought it was a done deal that once a king took the Throne his wife automatically became Queen.Confused

It was always going to be the case. Charles’ camp have been playing a PR game of “softly, softly catcher monkey” re Camilla for 25 years. They made such a bonkers undertaking about “Princess Consort” at the time of the wedding, to keep Diana fans sweet, that now they’ve judged it takes the Queen’s personal pronouncement to undo it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Meh, I don't feel sorry for William who won't be having to worry about how to pay for his heating. Prince Charles could have seen the writing on the wall when William and Harry were little. Harry has sensibly left.

derxa · 06/02/2022 16:20

@TheKeatingFive

As the future King of England he's a target. Many of the places that he goes to don't have direct flights.

Gosh the excuses just keep rolling in dont they. All the more reason for a lower profile head of state. Our Irish president has a much lower carbon footprint that Charles who's only an heir still.

I thought that he farms organically and uses sustainable/natural methods on his estates?

That may be, but what about the enormous, costly houses that he inhabits. He could run his farms without those.

I don't want a boring wee man like your president. It's as simple as that.
Havanananana · 06/02/2022 16:41

The UK needs a monarchy in order to bring in the tourists? Not really - very few people ever get to see any of the Royals. People still flock to France (over twice as many tourists as visit the UK) and 15 million a year actually get to visit a palace like Versailles and walk around inside - unlike the British royal palaces which are firmly out of bounds to the taxpayers who fund them.

As for a President - not all countries have an American-style political President who is the head of the government. Under many constitutions, the President is a ceremonial, non-political role. People probably know that Angela Merkel was Chancellor of Germany (the equivalent role of the British Prime Minister) for 16 years, but how many can name the current "Bundespräsident" who has been President since 2017, or even know that Chancellor and President are two different positions?

Having a monarch also has political implications for the legitimate governance of the UK. MPs have to swear an Oath of allegiance to the Crown before they are allowed to take their seats in Parliament - something which any MP elected on an Anti-Monarchy manifesto would be unable to do, and something that currently prevents the elected representatives of 7 UK constituencies from taking their seats.

FlasherMcGruff · 06/02/2022 18:04

While I hate all the servile ‘you’re naturally superior to us’ bowing while they sit on a throne bollocks, the hereditary monarch does give us a continuity and stability as a nation that I do think we’d miss if it went and someone like Boris was the ultimate authority. The Queen led by example with her husband’s funeral, unlike him. That kind of guidance does count, even if it doesn’t seem like much.

It’s the ostentatious wealth that I struggle with. Sitting on a gold throne when a mile away there’s probably a food bank. But this has discussed done many times - the royals attract a ton of tourism etc etc.

Jedsnewstar · 06/02/2022 18:12

And as for the - tourism defence.
The Crown Jewels, the palaces, the pomp and ceremony, the changing of the guard, the carriages, soldiers and everything else belong to the U.K. not to a bunch of overbred toffs

I agree. In fact can you image how much money they would bring in if people could pay to stay in Buckingham palace etc. The idea they bring in more that they cost is way over simplified.

DrivelandNonsense · 06/02/2022 18:34

@derxa boring!! 😂😂 If anyone is boring it’s the uneducated spoilt Charles who has achieved nothing with his life bar waiting around for mummy to pop her clogs and cutting some ribbons.

Anyone remember at the start of covid that video of Charles where he couldn’t even remember he wasn’t supposed to shake hands with people! Literally he had one job!!

Michael D? He's quite an interesting character, but we've had boring presidents too.

That's fine. Bringing children up to take their roles in the Royal family entertainment business, with perks and power to compensate? Not so fine. It's like when Harry left and half the UK seemed to feel he owed them more.

Why should some kid have to grow up to entertain you to keep the UK running smoothly?

(Not that Charles, William et al are exactly charisma factories, but why should they be. HMQ was considered deathly dull from the 1970s through to the 90s too anyway)

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 06/02/2022 18:38

Let old big ears have his turn. He’s waited patiently for long enough.

If it’s revolution you’re after I know a scruffy haired bozo that could do with being over thrown!

Pedallleur · 06/02/2022 18:48

Utter bill of about the RD generating money. Who has seen the Queen? I mean close up, had a chat, cup of tea etc. I could see the Pope if I went to Rome. He has a papal audience every week. The Queen lives on her estates or at a Palace. She is only visible if she wants to be. It's all on their terms. Tourists get to see Guards, a castle, some flags.

Pedallleur · 06/02/2022 18:49

Utter bllx I meant to say
