Waitrose delivery with no bags?!

239 replies

playaaa · 05/02/2022 21:32

Just got our first Waitrose delivery after defecting from ocado... Wtf, all the items come just in the crates rather than bags? It does seem more environmentally friendly tbf, but how do people put everything away?!
Do you put everything away properly and make the poor delivery person wait?
Or tip everything (massive shop to last us the whole week ahead) out onto the living room floor like DH did, in a huge mess, in an attempt to get the empty crates back to delivery person as quickly as possible?
WWBU to switch right back to ocado after this harrowing experience??

We wiped our shopping down at the start of the pandemic, when nobody knew much about transmission of the virus. In hindsight it now seems so ridiculous. Along with quarantining the post. Hmm

liveforsummer · 06/02/2022 09:38

@EddyF

What about for people who live in apartments/lifts/stairs etc?
Pop them in to some of the big shopper/bag for life bags that you'd use if carrying your shopping bought in the supermarket from the car or bus id assume? This is how I shop however with a bagless delivery I'd just pop it from crate to shopper at my door then carry up the stairs.

@JollyAndBright

Take crates into kitchen Unload onto kitchen counters Return crates to driver Wash and put away shopping.

This is on the Waitrose website-

How and where will my groceries be delivered?
Our drivers can now bring your groceries into your home or to a location of your choice. If you prefer, you can take crates into your home or unpack them into your own reusable bags on your doorstep. Please let your driver know when they arrive with your delivery and they’ll be happy to help you.

If you are self-isolating we’ll only be able to deliver to your doorstep, please let your driver know as soon as they arrive if this is the case.

We’re unable to deliver to garages, porches or sheds because we can’t leave an order unattended.

liveforsummer · 06/02/2022 09:42

If you saw the colour of the water in the bowl of hot soapy water after wiping down the weeks shopping you’d be doing it too,

I definitely wouldn't, I don't eat the packaging 😆. As a human race the vast majority have survived through the years not washing their shopping. We need a little grime for our immune systems to function

What's easy about washing your shopping?
RobinPenguins · 06/02/2022 09:47

Carry crates through to kitchen, empty all the stuff onto kitchen table or worktops, give crates back, put stuff away. Where’s the drama? I didn’t realise any of them were still delivering with bags tbh. For the love of god don’t make the driver wait while you put it away “properly”.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2022 09:49

It’s disgusting how filthy it is

Where on earth is your shopping coming from to be that dirty? I'd be having a word if that's the case.

We used anti bac wipes (so shoot me) and they never picked up any dirt at all.

megletthesecond · 06/02/2022 09:50

I take it all out in the porch then put it away.

Some people did so when it was though covid was surface transmissible. Most have accepted now they were being a bit daft and stopped ...
Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2022 09:56

Yes, I often think that in years to come our potential Grandchildren will be like 'Nan tell me again about how you had to wear a mask to go shopping and wash down your groceries back in 2020' a bit like my own Great Gran showing me her own ration books from WW2.

StickerPlace · 06/02/2022 10:05

I just unpack it all into the hallway then put away into kitchen from there.

Isn't rocket science and doesn't take long.

Rather put it away properly than ish because the driver is waiting. It's only in the hall for a couple of minutes.

stuntbubbles · 06/02/2022 10:11

I won’t even have shopping in the house, straight to the incinerator: you can’t be too careful

Blueuggboots · 06/02/2022 10:18

@JollyAndBright WASH? Wash what?

I just cut out the middle man and flush it straight down the loo.

Waitrose delivery driver here. We're happy to wait, bring it through to the kitchen for you and even unload it in your kitchen for you if you wish (putting it all away is a step too far, sorry!). Give us bags and we'll bag it for you (or help you bag it, teamwork makes the dream work). I restack crates so they're as high a possible to mean customers aren't scrabbling around on their hands and knees and will lift the crates if needed so the customer doesn't hurt their back. Time spent at each property is recorded and will effect the divery schedule in future because we know some customers need more time than others and they includes time spent chatting to people who may not see another person all week. In my opinion, if you have a dog, that's a huge bonus and you can take as long as you like unpacking your shopping as long as I can pet your pooch! The bag issue is a huge benefit to the planet, our bags used to be recycled but even that process has a carbon footprint. Much better for the planet to just not have the bags.

CourtRand · 06/02/2022 10:30

We grab old bags and put it in those to unpack from... it's not complicated.

iusedtohavechickens · 06/02/2022 10:30

I'm a delivery driver, if you have a bad back or disability you can ask us to bring shopping through to your kitchen, I always offer this to the elderly.
Some people take crates to their kitchen, some use shopping bags at the door and others use wash baskets or plastic boxes.

We get allocated 7 minutes delivery time per customer, sometimes more if it's a big order or in a block of flats.

SoupDragon · 06/02/2022 10:31

Haven't Waitrose done this for years? When I had them deliver ages ago, I lined up my usual shopping bags in the hall and unloaded the crates into them. Job done.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2022 10:34

There was a choice of bags or no bags up until recently at Waitrose. If you wanted bags there was a charge of 80p or something. This has now been stopped and having a collection or delivery bagged is not an option any more.

dizzydizzydizzy · 06/02/2022 10:36

I have a pile of bags at the front door and the driver helps me pack them.

No, there was a choice up until very recently.

(putting it all away is a step too far, sorry!)

Especially if it requires washing first Grin

Nooo everyone on mumsnet knows you must never put ANYTHING down the loo that isn't human waste
