Waitrose delivery with no bags?!

playaaa · 05/02/2022 21:32

Just got our first Waitrose delivery after defecting from ocado... Wtf, all the items come just in the crates rather than bags? It does seem more environmentally friendly tbf, but how do people put everything away?!
Do you put everything away properly and make the poor delivery person wait?
Or tip everything (massive shop to last us the whole week ahead) out onto the living room floor like DH did, in a huge mess, in an attempt to get the empty crates back to delivery person as quickly as possible?
WWBU to switch right back to ocado after this harrowing experience??

I'm not a boomer I'm just too poor to live on a actual house where anything at all is Herat the front door 😆

SartresSoul · 06/02/2022 12:56

I thought all supermarkets had ditched bags now, I know Tesco and sainsburys haven’t used bags for a few years now. I have big ikea bags so load it into those.

Graphista · 06/02/2022 13:21

This has been happening with the other major supermarkets for ages now.

I have my own collapsible crates that I decent stuff into but yes it's a pita and as I'm west coast Scotland most of the year it's windy and rainy and stuff arrives wet!

It's stupid! At the very least they would be properly enclosed crates they use

I used to feel guilty about keeping the drivers waiting but now I don't, their decision to do this nonsense they can bloody well suck up the extra time deliveries take! (And yes I've checked with drivers and they're fine with this in terms of they don't blame the customers! They are pissed off at the bosses who made this decision who obviously have never done deliveries themselves!)

My flat between small rooms and lack of counter space I need to use my own crates it's a ball ache!

Why would you unload them in the living room? Just take the crates into the kitchen and then unload and return. It takes a few minutes max.

Not everyone has the room/counter space in the kitchen! I don't

There are alternatives to single use plastic bags just this country is WAY behind in getting/using them like over 20 years behind!

I'm also disabled and this makes delivery day a whole "thing" tor me

And yes as per pps the only difference is now I need to buy bin bags whereas previously I'd use the carrier bags for that purpose

Cellulose bags are imo the way to go

You just bung it all on the kitchen table/counters, and sort it from there. It takes a minute or two, tops.

Again not everyone has a spacious kitchen with a table and counter space!

For some of us, it IS a "big deal". It's a fucking pain in the arse.

Yep!

that you'd use if carrying your shopping bought in the supermarket from the car or bus id assume?

Many of us that get deliveries do so because we are disabled and aren't able to do this anyway

I think people are saying space is an issue in the kitchen. No room on worktops and no table? Groceries need to go straight into cupboards/fridge.

Exactly

We can't all lift full crates.

This too! They weigh a ton! This is also partly why I get deliveries I'm on 3rd floor and no way I could carry a weekly shop up myself especially drinks and tinned stuff.

Greyhare · 06/02/2022 22:48

@summertimerolls

I'm so confused by people unloading crates at the door, packing them into bags and then unpacking them again in the kitchen.

Just take the crates straight to the kitchen and unload them onto the table or worktop. You're making even more work for yourselves otherwise!

I have dogs and a house cat, so it's easier to fill bags on the driveway and for the driver to leave, rather than trying to battle to get in the door without letting the dogs out carrying an awkward crate. Takes less than 2 minutes rather than fart arsing about going back and forth with crates.

I get deliveries from all the major supermarkets and they all bring the crates into the kitchen for me and wait while I empty them. Some of them even unload them for me.

GoodbyeKat · 08/02/2022 17:54

Welcome to the world of online groceries. Bloody annoying it did all you can do

Redglitter · 08/02/2022 18:29

@BABAHOTEL

Morrison still use bags.
Not everywhere they don't. Haven't had bags for a long time now with Morrisons

They won’t even bring it to my front door (2nd floor and huge parking by the door) and had a couple of drivers get shirty about it. Only Waitrose still bring it to my door.
Knackeredmommy · 08/02/2022 18:54

I bag shopping at the door. The driver passes me a crate, I bag it all up then carry to kitchen and put away

UpDownRound · 08/02/2022 18:57

@Travis1

Take crate to kitchen. Empty crate onto worktop. Hand crate back. Take next crate. Repeat until all crates empty. Check items and place in their appropriate homes once driver gone.

It is not difficult. YABU. Save a turtle.

Exactly this. I thought all supermarket deliveries were like this. I'd hate to have a load of unnecessary bags to also have to put away.
purplesequins · 08/02/2022 19:20

here (not uk) deliveries are brought in collapsible crates. 4€ deposit for these.
you can return them to the driver when you receive the next delivery. or you hand them back at customer service of any supermarket.

Not unreasonable depending on how easy it is for you to unload at the door or bring crates in to unload. They should have informed you when you signed up. I did consider using Waitrose delivery but their drivers are the most dangerous and discourteous drivers on the road. Among the grocery delivery services, Ocado still uses recyclable bags and takes them back for recycling even in 2025. I never switched to Waitrose.

ObtuseMoose · 03/11/2025 09:53

Wash and put away shopping
I don't understand this step, what are you washing?

pontiouspilates · 04/11/2025 08:17

I have a few of those large blue Ikea bags, I pop everything in those, at the door, take them through to the kitchen and unpack. I've never given it a second thought!
