Waitrose delivery with no bags?!

239 replies

playaaa · 05/02/2022 21:32

Just got our first Waitrose delivery after defecting from ocado... Wtf, all the items come just in the crates rather than bags? It does seem more environmentally friendly tbf, but how do people put everything away?!
Do you put everything away properly and make the poor delivery person wait?
Or tip everything (massive shop to last us the whole week ahead) out onto the living room floor like DH did, in a huge mess, in an attempt to get the empty crates back to delivery person as quickly as possible?
WWBU to switch right back to ocado after this harrowing experience??

@Davros

I hate it. My recycling is full of packaging that comes from shops and supermarkets but I can't be trusted with a few bags to put said recycling in
That's a good point. It's fine that my shopping isn't bagged, but don't go all eco about it - getting manufacturers to package their food using less packaging and using more materials that can actually be recycled would make more of a difference.

There has been a huge increase in plastic which cannot be recycled, a decrease in the option to buy loose produce, or that the loose products work out more expensive e.g. 6 pink lady apples.

@Travis1

Take crate to kitchen. Empty crate onto worktop. Hand crate back. Take next crate. Repeat until all crates empty. Check items and place in their appropriate homes once driver gone.

It is not difficult. YABU. Save a turtle.

This. For years now.

@Vinorosso74

We get a Sainsburys delivery without bags and just unload the items from the crates into our bags. Doesn't take very long.
Same. I take massive bags to the front door and empty the crates into them.
Perfectlystill · 05/02/2022 23:41

Please tell us why you are washing your shopping @JollyAndBright

Bumply · 05/02/2022 23:43

It's one of the reasons I prefer Amazon/Morrisons as they deliver in paper bags you can recycle.
Odd occasion I use Tesco I dump the larger items in the laundry basket and it doesn't take long

oknowimscared · 05/02/2022 23:51

I love Morrisons for still using bags. They charge 10p per bag, but when next week rolls round you give them last week’s bags bag for 10p reduction per bag. So it costs nothing, essentially, and makes doorstep delivery easy and stress free.

Ijustreallywantacat · 05/02/2022 23:51

Yeah it's all very well being environmentally friendly, until its slightly inconvenient for you then fuck it. YABVU

I cancelled my Waitrose delivery because of this. I am disabled and can just about cope with bringing in and unpacking my Ocado shop one bag at a time. Some of it has to wait until the next day.

There's no way I could unpack the crates into something else and I need to minimise contact with the delivery person as I'm immunocompromised.

It doesn't even help the environment as if I don't have any plastic carrier bags I have to buy some similar sized plastic bags to put our rubbish down the chute.

mycatisannoying · 06/02/2022 00:08

Tesco: take in the crates, give driver the crates from last time (which have been stored in my cellar). No rush and no pressure. The drivers have always been perfectly happy with this arrangement.

MummyGummy · 06/02/2022 00:37

Get some bags for life and unload straight from the crates into the bags at the front door.

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/02/2022 00:46

You just bung it all on the kitchen table/counters, and sort it from there. It takes a minute or two, tops.

Eightiesfan · 06/02/2022 00:49

@JollyAndBright

Take crates into kitchen Unload onto kitchen counters Return crates to driver Wash and put away shopping.

Easy.

This is what we do, much better than having dozens of bags hanging around to send back with the next delivery.
PainterMummy · 06/02/2022 00:54

I just bring my own bags to the door, the driver and I put the items from the crates into my bags and off he goes. I then carry the bags through to my kitchen. Simples

RedCandyApple · 06/02/2022 00:55

Tesco’s haven’t done bags for years, yes they did it during the pandemic for a short period but they haven’t used them for a long time now. I really do hate it and I do find it takes much longer,
My hallway is small so I can’t really tip all the crates as it doesn’t fit and I order about £150/£200 worth of shopping so I also hate standing here having to pick up shopping one at a time, as it does take much longer, and I do find that must drivers seem impatient.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 06/02/2022 00:56

There has never been any such thing as a single use carrier bag in my house. They all got reused - some several times, and most as bin liners.

Now I have to buy SINGLE USE bin liners. How is that better?

I'm also disabled and find it difficult to decant my shopping from the crates. For some of us, it IS a "big deal". It's a fucking pain in the arse.

RedCandyApple · 06/02/2022 00:58

Iceland’s still do bags but I struggle to do a weekly shop there so don’t order from there often but I appreciate the bags as it’s so much quicker! Driver just brings them all to the door then knocks and leaves you to bring them in so no awkward hanging around whilst you unload it

OldieWordly · 06/02/2022 01:11

Like @JollyAndBright I wipe down all my shopping. Why are some people so affronted by this. I want to do it, it makes me feel better doing it, so why do you care?

endlesscraziness · 06/02/2022 01:15

Possibly most middle class post ever! I thought this had been standard for the last 2 years

StarlightLady · 06/02/2022 01:27

I unload onto kitchen worktops. Unless you are disabled, l don’t understand why it takes any longer to unpack a crate than a bag.

In France they have gone one step further and banned all fruit and veg is plastic packaging unless it is pre-prepared.

playaaa · 06/02/2022 07:02

The difference is about whether the delivery driver has to wait for me to unpack- with a bag they just drop off all the bags and leave

See I really welcome this! Have campaigned for this for years

Wash?
BABAHOTEL · 06/02/2022 07:10

@Marmm

Why are you washing your shopping?

Do you not wash your fruit and veg?

Depends if I'm going to peel it!
BABAHOTEL · 06/02/2022 07:11

@Marmm

Found it hilarious that there are still people washing their shopping though. Get a grip. 😂 no you get a grip. If it says on it to wash it I'm going to wash it.
What shopping says please wash me?
Muststopeating · 06/02/2022 07:19

I can't believe any shops are still using bags. Thats ridiculously outdated.

I absolutely hated it during COVID when everything was in bags again (for 'hygiene') and I ended up with a gazillion bags.

If I think back the years since deliveries in a bag were a thing then I suppose it was a bit awkward fhe first time but you get used to it very quickly. Quite often I am left unpacking the first few crates while the driver goes back to get the next few so only have the hovering for the last few bits.

If this has surprised you then your current tolerance of plastic use is way way way too high.
