Waitrose delivery with no bags?!

playaaa · 05/02/2022 21:32

Just got our first Waitrose delivery after defecting from ocado... Wtf, all the items come just in the crates rather than bags? It does seem more environmentally friendly tbf, but how do people put everything away?!
Do you put everything away properly and make the poor delivery person wait?
Or tip everything (massive shop to last us the whole week ahead) out onto the living room floor like DH did, in a huge mess, in an attempt to get the empty crates back to delivery person as quickly as possible?
WWBU to switch right back to ocado after this harrowing experience??

Harrowing experience because your shopping didn’t come in plastic bags 🙄

@JollyAndBright

Take crates into kitchen Unload onto kitchen counters Return crates to driver Wash and put away shopping.

Easy.

Not not easy for every one though, I am disabled, Waitrose know this, I was on the priority list with them during lockdown. I have to have a delivery when someone else is home as I can do it otherwise. Bags were a lot easier for me.
LemonDrizzles · 06/02/2022 07:28

We use the stairs that is by the front door. Kids help on a Saturday morning. Youngest (2) was recently quite proud that she put away the yoghurt in the cupboard. Then when driver leave, put away freezer and fridge stuff...

mirabellemadrigal · 06/02/2022 07:30

Where have you been? This is totally normal

It takes me about 2 mins to unload everything from the crates.

mirabellemadrigal · 06/02/2022 07:35

Dont be concerned for the driver. That's their job. They're expecting this to happen. It happens at every drop off

Do you have a back door?

What do you mean, Waitrose know this? It must be difficult for you but why shop with them if they don’t meet your needs?

JollyAndBright · 06/02/2022 08:15

I didn’t think washing shopping was so controversial. Confused

If you saw the colour of the water in the bowl of hot soapy water after wiping down the weeks shopping you’d be doing it too,
It’s disgusting how filthy it is.

We started doing it at the start of the pandemic but continued because of how dirty the shopping is, I’d rather not put away dirty food/packets/tins that I then have to handle when I’m cooking.

It only takes a couple of extra minutes.

All fruit and veg goes into a big bowl of vinegar and water to soak before being drained, wiped dry and put away, it cleans and preserves it so that it keeps for longer.

fizzyfood · 06/02/2022 08:19

Hope Ocado don't start doing that. They recycle the bags we return.

stuntbubbles · 06/02/2022 08:25

Take crates into kitchen
Unload onto kitchen counters
Return crates to driver
Wash and put away shopping.
This except I don’t wash my shopping.

Also the 2yo helps: “There’s someone at the DOOR. :high-pitched shriek: I CARRY THE EGGS!” While in slo-mo I shout “Noooooooooo.”

Last week the driver helpfully picked out some non-breakable things for her to carry, though she did try to heft a crate.

FlipFlops4Me · 06/02/2022 08:28

I still use Ocado. Each week I give back the previous week's bags. They charge me for the new bags but the bags I give back offset the charge, so it works out even. I wouldn't mind if they decided to stop the bags - I used to get Sainsburys and just took the laundry baskets out and loaded them up. plus a couple of bags for life.

OrinoccoFlew · 06/02/2022 08:29

Harrowing experience?! Supermarkets have been doing this for literally ages. Just keep crates by the front door and transfer them, takes a few minutes.

Their website says they will bring you'd shopping in for you if you ask them.
phoenixrosehere · 06/02/2022 08:40

I just bring my own bags to the door, the driver and I put the items from the crates into my bags and off he goes. I then carry the bags through to my kitchen. Simples

Same. They still have them in bags in my area and I just take one of my big shopping bags to the door and quickly empty them there so I don’t have to remember to give the bags back.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 06/02/2022 08:50

I take my bags for life to the front door and load them up from the crates. Have a nice chat with the driver while I'm doing it. Then take it into the kitchen and put it away (don't wash my shopping, are people still doing that??).

BeyondMyWits · 06/02/2022 08:50

We are lucky and have a back door that opens into the kitchen. We have an outdoor table that I put at the door on delivery days. Crate goes on table, I take stuff out (no bending or faffing) and put stuff on surfaces... by cupboard, by fridge, by freezer.

I still get an ocado delivery every so often as I repurpose their bags in my bin without having to buy single use plastic bin bags.

ufucoffee · 06/02/2022 08:59

Delivery drivers for Waitrose and asda bring the crates into kitchen for me (probably cos I'm getting on a bit) and I just chuck everything out on kitchen benches. Quicker than putting it into bags at the door.

CrunchyCarrot · 06/02/2022 09:02

I mainly get deliveries from Ocado but get Waitrose probably once a month. The driver from Waitrose told me firmly 'it's against the law to use bags, now', which clearly isn't true as Ocado still do use them!

On to your question - since I have a bad back, I cannot bend up and down multiple times fishing items out of their crates, so I pass my large shopping bags to them and ask them to please fill them up outside the back door (under porch). Once they're gone I can deal with the items at my leisure so it's not rushed. At no point does the delivery guy come into the house, there's not enough room for crates to go on the benches anyway. Seems to work, if a little incovenient!

beecrazy · 06/02/2022 09:07

I use a couple of laundry baskets, fill one at the door, husband carries it to the kitchen as I fill the next. If needed husband returns with the now emptied basket and fills remaining items in it as I have nice chat with delivery driver [

MrsToothyBitch · 06/02/2022 09:17

I've done online shops at Waitrose- I've never had bags. They used to give them out but I refused to pay for them. I live in a ground floor flat so to avoid blocking the main hall and my own hall, I ask the driver to bring it to the back door (I unlatch the gate before hand) and unload straight onto the kitchen counters.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2022 09:21

Waitrose also do Click & Collect. At our large one you pull up in a numbered space and they bring your shopping to you. You empty it from the crates into bags in your boot (or they will if you ask).

If receiving a delivery is stressful and problematic for you then it's worth a try.

queenMab99 · 06/02/2022 09:30

we stopped getting bags from Morrisons, it was very difficult for me as I am old and decrepit! Then they rejigged the online site and also the delivery service, so they now use bags which we pay for, but return them on the next delivery for recycling and get a refund.

liveforsummer · 06/02/2022 09:33

@Marmm

Why are you washing your shopping?

Do you not wash your fruit and veg?

Yes, immediately before eating it not when putting it away.

julie81 · 06/02/2022 09:33

Asda do it and I would not have a delivery if they did not. I just take crate into kitchen and unload. If larger crates I throw in my own reusable bags at door. No problem.
