Waitrose delivery with no bags?!

239 replies

playaaa · 05/02/2022 21:32

Just got our first Waitrose delivery after defecting from ocado... Wtf, all the items come just in the crates rather than bags? It does seem more environmentally friendly tbf, but how do people put everything away?!
Do you put everything away properly and make the poor delivery person wait?
Or tip everything (massive shop to last us the whole week ahead) out onto the living room floor like DH did, in a huge mess, in an attempt to get the empty crates back to delivery person as quickly as possible?
WWBU to switch right back to ocado after this harrowing experience??

Why can’t they use paper bags? Surely that would be environmentally friendly and more convenient to the customer?

HW1989 · 05/02/2022 21:44

@JollyAndBright

Take crates into kitchen Unload onto kitchen counters Return crates to driver Wash and put away shopping.

Easy.

This.
mumsiedarlingrevolta · 05/02/2022 21:44

I just have my bags ready and waiting by front door and quickly empty the crates in to bags at door.

Quick and easy

Iwonderifiwonderwhy · 05/02/2022 21:45

🤣 We went through this last week and switched back to Ocado. Wtf. I get the need to avoid plastic waste but Ocado recycle all their bags… And I’ve got a bad back ache I don’t need to be on my knees bent forward scrabbling around the bottom of a crate every delivery while the embarrassed delivery guy looks at the horizon.

Marmm · 05/02/2022 21:45

@phishy

this harrowing experience?

Pretty sure it’s more harrowing for the whales swallowing our plastic waste, OP.

And David Attenborough who is like DONT YOU REMEMBER BLUE PLANET?!

Tesco orders havent arrived with bags for well over a year (I think) which is excellent imho. When our guy arrives Im ready waiting with my own plastic crates. I empty theirs into mine. Takes a couple of minutes. Driver leaves and I cart the crates into my kitchen.

No need for single use carrier bags at all.

Babdoc · 05/02/2022 21:46

It’s good, as it reduces plastic bags and waste. I put some big cotton bags beside the front door when my Sainsbugs or Waitrose delivery is due. The driver puts the crates on my hall floor, and I just quickly throw the stuff into my bags. It literally takes less than two minutes to unload three crates.
He then takes his crates away and drives off, and I take my bags to the kitchen and unpack at my leisure.

playaaa · 05/02/2022 21:46

@Travis1

Take crate to kitchen. Empty crate onto worktop. Hand crate back. Take next crate. Repeat until all crates empty. Check items and place in their appropriate homes once driver gone.

It is not difficult. YABU. Save a turtle.

Very pleased to save the DTurtles but blimey this still takes about 10x longer than ocado's drop-all-bags-by-front-door-and-leave method! I just felt for the driver!

😂

you don't have a waitrose issue, you have a DH issue

Paper bags require a lot of energy and water to produce, and have a short lifetime. They aren't great tbh. Cloth bags are much better as they can be reused more
dementedpixie · 05/02/2022 21:46

Unload into bags at the door and give crates back

Wafflesnsniffles · 05/02/2022 21:46

Tesco orders did come with bags during the height of the lockdown...... then they switched to utterly stupid "tray liners". Thankfully now back to no bags as they did before covid.

playaaa · 05/02/2022 21:47

@Giraffesandbottoms

Agree it’s very awkward and they have to wait outside whilst you unpack. Our last guy got very shirty about waiting but what does he want?! Make sure you pick slots you aren’t there for so your husband has to deal with the awkwardness - that’s what I do 😆
Good plan!!

@Gocatgo

They wait. I had this a few weeks ago and spoke to the delivery guy. He said that they leave time for the unpacking. Then subsequently having seen how long it takes at your house, they factor that into their delivery times.
Ah that's good to know! Thanks Smile

Same........except......should.....Should I....should I be washing my shopping?!
Wafflesnsniffles · 05/02/2022 21:49

playaa it takes just a couple of minutes - no need for it to take an age. Im astonished you care more about the driver getting away quicker than the environment.

It literally takes me 3 minutes to unpack mine from their crates into mine.

dementedpixie · 05/02/2022 21:49

No you shouldn't be washing your shopping, there is no need to do so

BurscoughBooths · 05/02/2022 21:49

Waitrose delivery people will now carry the crates into the kitchen for you if you ask. It takes 2 mins tops to unload the crates onto the table & return them.
Even if Ocado do recycle plastic bags, it still wastes resources to do that. If no plastic bags are used, none need to be made

DobbyTheHouseElk · 05/02/2022 21:50

Some drivers are fine about waiting. Some get really impatient.

Marmm · 05/02/2022 21:50

Why are you washing your shopping?

Do you not wash your fruit and veg?

Lucienandjean · 05/02/2022 21:50

IKEA bags...I just transfer it all into a couple of IKEA bags, then carry them to the kitchen once the delivery driver has gone. Simple.

gingercat02 · 05/02/2022 21:50

I use my laundry basket. Chuck all the non squishable stuff in and and couple of bags for life for fruits and vegetables etc

Unmute · 05/02/2022 21:50

Our delivery guy talks to my dog while I unpack the crates into bags at the door. It only takes a few minutes.

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2022 21:51

How much shopping was delivered? Shock How did it take a whole ten times longer? Although you were putting it into the wrong room so that's not going to help.
