Waitrose delivery with no bags?!

playaaa · 05/02/2022 21:32

Just got our first Waitrose delivery after defecting from ocado... Wtf, all the items come just in the crates rather than bags? It does seem more environmentally friendly tbf, but how do people put everything away?!
Do you put everything away properly and make the poor delivery person wait?
Or tip everything (massive shop to last us the whole week ahead) out onto the living room floor like DH did, in a huge mess, in an attempt to get the empty crates back to delivery person as quickly as possible?
WWBU to switch right back to ocado after this harrowing experience??

It's what tesco does now. They used to have handy plastic liners I don't know if they still do but the sea turtles and David Attenborough will thank you

Vinorosso74 · 05/02/2022 21:34

We get a Sainsburys delivery without bags and just unload the items from the crates into our bags. Doesn't take very long.

JollyAndBright · 05/02/2022 21:36

Take crates into kitchen
Unload onto kitchen counters
Return crates to driver
Wash and put away shopping.

Easy.

eddiemairswife · 05/02/2022 21:36

You provide your own plastic or other bags, and the driver will fill them for you.

Giraffesandbottoms · 05/02/2022 21:36

Agree it’s very awkward and they have to wait outside whilst you unpack. Our last guy got very shirty about waiting but what does he want?! Make sure you pick slots you aren’t there for so your husband has to deal with the awkwardness - that’s what I do 😆

Bananaman123 · 05/02/2022 21:36

Asda have been doing it for years. I take shopper bags to the front door and unpack grates to bags then put away. It's still easier than going to supermarket.

CousinKrispy · 05/02/2022 21:36

I think I had it in a recent Asda delivery too. Once you get used to it it's not a massive deal--I put the food down on the nearest surface to empty the crates, then potter around putting it away after the delivery driver has scarpered.

I have a ton of canvas bags so if I use my brain I could just load into those bags (like going to the shop!) then carry the bag through my house I guess!

Travis1 · 05/02/2022 21:37

Take crate to kitchen. Empty crate onto worktop. Hand crate back. Take next crate. Repeat until all crates empty. Check items and place in their appropriate homes once driver gone.

It is not difficult. YABU. Save a turtle.

Roominmyhouse · 05/02/2022 21:38

Sainsburys do the same, I carry the crates through to the kitchen and empty them onto the sides or floor then give the crates back and put everything away when they’ve gone.

Divebar2021 · 05/02/2022 21:39

Why would you unload them in the living room? Just take the crates into the kitchen and then unload and return. It takes a few minutes max.

Gocatgo · 05/02/2022 21:40

They wait. I had this a few weeks ago and spoke to the delivery guy. He said that they leave time for the unpacking. Then subsequently having seen how long it takes at your house, they factor that into their delivery times.

CointreauVersial · 05/02/2022 21:41

Tesco haven't supplied bags for years. I just bring the crates in and unload reasonably smartly (shove it all onto the kitchen table - teens and DH usually pitch in) then return the empties. The driver is used to it.

They used to offer to bring the crates in and assist with unloading, but I expect that's fallen by the wayside because of Covid.

This is what I do. It hardly takes any time and the driver is getting the other crates as I unpack the first few. They are quite happy to wait those few minutes at the end for the last crate.

I put some things in bags as quick as I can and some biggish things just unload into the corridor. All drivers I came across were waiting patiently. Then I put everything away properly. I’m not overexcited about this decision but there are too much plastic around.

Davros · 05/02/2022 21:41

I hate it. My recycling is full of packaging that comes from shops and supermarkets but I can't be trusted with a few bags to put said recycling in

DrFoxtrot · 05/02/2022 21:42

I just unload everything quickly in the hall and the kids then take it to the kitchen and put away. We haven't had bags from Morrisons for a while.

SpikeySmooth · 05/02/2022 21:42

My mum uses Asda and loads up her shopping bags on the doorstep. Bit of a faff but it saves on plastic (and remembering to hand back the bags each week).

Mummy1608 · 05/02/2022 21:42

Have bags for life ready near the door when the van arrives. Unload crates into bags. Takes less than a minute.

Single use plastic is bad enough but you want plastic bags for the 2-second walk from your front door to your kitchen?! Yabu

They did in the pandemic when everyone thought you could catch covid off the trays
Littlebelina · 05/02/2022 21:42

I just unload crates into bags for life at door, then move to kitchen to unpack

enjoyingscience · 05/02/2022 21:43

We do the same as others - get it all unloaded onto kitchen sides and table and then put away afterwards. Takes not that much longer than taking bags into the kitchen.

phishy · 05/02/2022 21:43

this harrowing experience?

Pretty sure it’s more harrowing for the whales swallowing our plastic waste, OP.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 05/02/2022 21:43

Ocado are the only ones left who use bags. Then they take them back to recycle into more bags. I got £9.90 off my last shop with Ocado for giving them their bags back.

Around here, ASDA have the cleanest crates.

Marmm · 05/02/2022 21:44

I just take it all out in the hallway and the struggle to move afterwards

CythereaGraye · 05/02/2022 21:44

I unload it into laundry baskets - only takes a minute and then easy to move it into the kitchen and put it away.
