Waitrose delivery with no bags?!

239 replies

playaaa · 05/02/2022 21:32

Just got our first Waitrose delivery after defecting from ocado... Wtf, all the items come just in the crates rather than bags? It does seem more environmentally friendly tbf, but how do people put everything away?!
Do you put everything away properly and make the poor delivery person wait?
Or tip everything (massive shop to last us the whole week ahead) out onto the living room floor like DH did, in a huge mess, in an attempt to get the empty crates back to delivery person as quickly as possible?
WWBU to switch right back to ocado after this harrowing experience??

@dementedpixie

No you shouldn't be washing your shopping, there is no need to do so
Mushrooms are literally covered in shit.
dementedpixie · 05/02/2022 21:52

@Marmm

Why are you washing your shopping?

Do you not wash your fruit and veg?

I wash fruit/veg just before use if required. I do not wash any other groceries before putting them away
Stopsnowing · 05/02/2022 21:53

My kitchen has no work too space for crates and I end up scrabbling on the doorstep

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2022 21:53

I wouldn't be making the driver wait while I washed all my fruit and veg. I don't think that's factored into the delivery time.

Kitkat151 · 05/02/2022 21:53

I have 2 laundry baskets that I transfer the stuff into

Marmm · 05/02/2022 21:53

I wash fruit/veg just before use if required. I do not wash any other groceries before putting them away ah I wash it before it goes in fruitbowl or soft fruit in the fridge. Can never get the kids to wash it

Squirrelblanket · 05/02/2022 21:54

Our kitchen is down very narrow twisty stairs so I can't carry crates down there. I keep a few of those big blue IKEA bags by the front door and put the shopping in that so that the man can go. Soft things go on the stairs until I've emptied the big bags and come and collect them and then take them to the kitchen. It's annoying but there you go.

Found it hilarious that there are still people washing their shopping though. Get a grip. 😂

spicedemerald · 05/02/2022 21:55

I have two washing baskets ready by the door and just transfer everything into them. It’s really not difficult.

@Mummy1608

Have bags for life ready near the door when the van arrives. Unload crates into bags. Takes less than a minute.

Single use plastic is bad enough but you want plastic bags for the 2-second walk from your front door to your kitchen?! Yabu

Well, my understanding was that the bags weren't single use as ocado takes all bags back for reuse. But anyway my concern here was for the delivery driver - I'm more than happy to carry the items in the crates (and always in favour of the more environmentally friendly option) but got very stressed out about how to unpack quickly enough! Will take some bags for life to the door and clear enough space in kitchen in preparation next time.

MadisonAvenue · 05/02/2022 21:56

I unload our delivery from Tesco’s crates into large Ikea bags at the doorway.

Last week though we were isolating so the driver unpacked the crates into carrier bags that he kept on the van and left them by the door, it was so much quicker to just pick the bags up ready packed. I much prefer that way of doing it. The carriers will be reused as bin bags.

(Walk more than 2 seconds too as up a flight of stairs and through a hallway - flat conversion rather than house)

I do, but as I prepare it, not when putting the shop away

Some people were/are washing their tins and other plastic packaged groceries. That's unnecessary
Growuppeople · 05/02/2022 21:57

No? Who washes fruit and veg? Confused

playaaa · 05/02/2022 21:58

@phishy

this harrowing experience?

Pretty sure it’s more harrowing for the whales swallowing our plastic waste, OP.

Fair point 😳

playaaa · 05/02/2022 21:59

@CythereaGraye

I unload it into laundry baskets - only takes a minute and then easy to move it into the kitchen and put it away.
Genius!!! This is what we'll do next time !! Solved Smile Thanks All!

People who read the instructions and take food hygene seriously. Also reduces the amount of pesticides consumed.
WalkingOnSonshine · 05/02/2022 22:00

I’ve never had my shopping delivered in bags, except for the pandemic at its peak.

I use one carrier bag to store all my soft plastic which then goes to Coop for recycling once a week.

So much quicker and easier to just unload at the front door into bags for life.

I just assumed everyone did this!

Redglitter · 05/02/2022 22:00

Take crates into kitchen
Unload onto kitchen counters
Return crates to driver
Wash and put away shopping

This is what I do, it's not difficult & takes almost no time. Except for washing my shopping Confused Do people really do that

DobbyTheHouseElk · 05/02/2022 22:01

I think Ocado bags are also liners for the crates. Because they are filled in a warehouse by robots it’s a different system to pickers in a supermarket.

Anyway they take them back, plus other single use plastic/bread bags etc and recycle it into new bags. I use them for multiple reasons before I hand them back.

😂

you don't have a waitrose issue, you have a DH issue

Wink

Fair point! 😂

My last Waitrose delivery, the chap took my second bag for me and unloaded the second crate into it while I did the first. He was marvellous.

But I do miss bags. I liked when Tesco did liners and you could scoop the whole lot out in one go.

MyDogsSpeakItalian · 05/02/2022 22:05

Since Tesco have stopped delivering in bags, we put our shopping away as we take it out the crates. Our delivery driver told us to the first time we had a delivery without bags, he said there’s no point in putting it in bags to then have to put it away.
