To hate my lounge carpet? Honest opinions on my lounge carpet that was laid yesterday

We wanted something neutral but practical as we have two dogs. So we chose this one which was laid yesterday. Because its two tone it looks totally different in my lounge than it did in the showroom! We even took a small sample home!

My heart sank when the fitters left. It looks like it can't decide what colour it is..it's a kind of mink at night and during the day it has a silver/grey look to it. We had the same carpet laid in our bedroom which looks stunning as our bedroom is a champagne/ dark brown theme. But in the lounge against the pastel colours of the ottoman and mauve curtains I just don't know what to think. Honest opinions please and also some ideas on tweaks on what I can do?

I agree it’s nice and the the ottoman just needs recovering.

SockFluffInTheBath · 04/02/2022 12:06

Maybe live with it for a few weeks and see how you feel? There are always people selling carpets round here so that’s an option if needs be.

It’s not my cup of tea. Reminds me of our lounge carpet back in the 80s but that’s probably cool again now along with baggy jeans! Grin

ComDummings · 04/02/2022 12:06

I also like it

ancientgran · 04/02/2022 12:07

I had a carpet like that, I found I had to be very careful how I vacuumed but it gradually did settle. I actually like the colour but then an old codger like me liking it might not be the news you want.

VestaTilley · 04/02/2022 12:07

It looks fine, perfectly nice, sensible colour which will work well if you’ve got pets. And it goes with your furniture.

Live with it for six months - then see how you feel. It’d be massively wasteful to tear it up when it’s only just been fitted.

Honestly, I’m a snob when it comes to interiors and I think it looks nice.

Cheekypeach · 04/02/2022 12:07

Oh dear. It’s like mine, very thick & ‘shiny’ so every foot print shows up. Can you replace it or is that not an option?

ancientgran · 04/02/2022 12:08

It doesn't really work with the sofa, could you put a throw on the sofa and I think it would look alot better.

Maui69 · 04/02/2022 12:09

I think it's lovely OP.

reader12 · 04/02/2022 12:09

I think the carpet’s fine. Maybe get the ottoman reupholstered as it doesn’t really go.

Nearlyadoctor · 04/02/2022 12:10

I like it

userxx · 04/02/2022 12:10

I really like it.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 04/02/2022 12:10

I think it looks nice. Neutral, and lovely and plush. Very expensive looking carpet.

DefaultParent · 04/02/2022 12:11

I find it's always overwhelming when you change carpet at first. I really like it and I think it matches your room well.

Evanted76 · 04/02/2022 12:12

It just goes to show the colours in the photos are not true to form. The ottoman is a pink/pale grey/blue check. Sofa is cream. I've just started hoovering the last bits of the carpet up and taken another quick photo. And here is a photo of the same carpet in the bedroom. Carpet is from Tapi and from the Aspire Range called Spanish Ochre.
If that wasn't bad enough, when the fitters were leaving, they reversed into my car that was parked on my driveway so the whole experience has been awful! I know it's not the fitters fault I don't like the carpet but we've been waiting for months for the carpet to be fitted.. and it's so nice getting a new carpet isn't it? New carpet smell and all that. It used to be a cream carpet in the lounge that was just not practical.

I think the colour looks fine and probably a good choice with dogs. I think it maybe looks a bit shiny as it’s perhaps polyester rather than wool / wool mix? Hopefully you’ll get used to it …. Or change some of your accessories / styling to complement it a bit.

IlonaRN · 04/02/2022 12:13

The carpet is lovely, but the checked thing isn't, and doesn't go with the carpet.

Litchum · 04/02/2022 12:15

Where do you put your hot drinks? Confused

ChittyBangs · 04/02/2022 12:15

I liked it originally but your new photo in different lighting does change the colours of the rest of your furniture.

I still like it Smile

Yep, add to landfill by throwing lovely brand new carpet away.
lucylucyapplejuicy · 04/02/2022 12:15

I really like that! Give it a couple of weeks and sure it will grow on you!

On a tray. It’s not hard.
Balonziaga · 04/02/2022 12:17

I think the carpet will settle

The problem is you have a blur of a lot of muted colours ranging from grey to pale yellow to cream and brown and even a pale terracotta (on the ottoman) and now the carpet. There is nothing with any strength holding it all together.

I think the ottoman in particular, is not working for you. If you introduce one bolder colour - possibly a dark red might work - and replaced the ottoman, added some cushions to the sofa and maybe got curtains with a small accent of deeper colour, everything would pull together better and the carpet would become the thing you wanted it to be - background. At the moment the carpet and the ottoman are the strongest things in the room and the don't match.

Elphame · 04/02/2022 12:18

I'm not a fan either I'm afraid.

Youcansaythatagainandagain · 04/02/2022 12:18

I agree with you OP. It looks patchy and the colour of the patchiness aren't particularly nice.

But if it was expensive, then you will have to get used to it. Buy some large light grey rugs to cover it which will work with the mauve theme in the room.

I wouldn't bother changing furnishings to go with a carpet you dislike because you will still be left with a carpet you dislike.

But if you like the style of this carpet and you probably do if you have it in your bedroom too?, then its a matter of getting used to it.

Balonziaga · 04/02/2022 12:19

Ha ignore everything I just said now I've seen the new picture. it looks much better in the second pic and the ottoman now looks to have pink which is picked out elsewhere.

It will settle and be fine.
