To hate my lounge carpet? Honest opinions on my lounge carpet that was laid yesterday

We wanted something neutral but practical as we have two dogs. So we chose this one which was laid yesterday. Because its two tone it looks totally different in my lounge than it did in the showroom! We even took a small sample home!

My heart sank when the fitters left. It looks like it can't decide what colour it is..it's a kind of mink at night and during the day it has a silver/grey look to it. We had the same carpet laid in our bedroom which looks stunning as our bedroom is a champagne/ dark brown theme. But in the lounge against the pastel colours of the ottoman and mauve curtains I just don't know what to think. Honest opinions please and also some ideas on tweaks on what I can do?

Sorry OP, it's a bit old people's home!

HunkyPunk · 04/02/2022 11:52

I agree with posters who have said that it’s the ottoman which stands out, and the look of the room would be transformed by re-upholstering it to match the curtains and cushions, as I don’t think the carpet accommodates any bold patterns. That’s the only change I would make. Your carpet is lovely, and v practical!

silverbubbles · 04/02/2022 11:53

Its totally fine. Its just a change to what you were used to. No one will notice and you will get used to it in few days.

SoupDragon · 04/02/2022 11:53

I think it looks nice.

I'm laughing at the "Granny" and "dated" comments. 😂

Roselilly36 · 04/02/2022 11:55

I think it looks nice, OP.

Sidge · 04/02/2022 11:55

I like it. I think the ottoman is the problem - it’s too brown and too patterned which clashes with the subtle “pattern” in the carpet.

I’d recover the sofa and ottoman with something cooler, like a grey/mushroom (as opposed to a brown mushroom).

Faevern · 04/02/2022 11:55

It does look like someone has gone daft with the vacuuming. It probably needs walking on and hoovering for a few weeks. I bought a fabulously expensive patterned rug and when it came it looked so pale I arranged to return it. However my DP said it would settle and he was right, fibres and stuff lifted out over a few weeks and I went from hating it to loving it.

I'm another one who thinks it's the sofas, maybe add some throws as it doesn't look very practical for dog friendly room?

Soffit · 04/02/2022 11:56

I feel for you. It's not very nice. I made a similar mistake when I was seventeen. I chose my new bedroom carpet based on the inherited wallpaper (white anaglypta with pastel paint brushstroke pattern). It often feels like a good idea in frugal times to coordinate with existing decor. However, what I realised was that you should buy exactly what you would choose if the rest of the decor/other considerations were not restricting your choices. However, it only works if you have already narrowed down your preferences so that over a decade or so, you can coordinate the other new colourings into your dream scheme one by one.

I like the carpet - I think it looks quite luxurious. Looking at the room though I think that the problem is that the carpet has a slight grey tone and the curtains and armchair also fit on the blue grey spectrum. The sofa is neutral and the rust checked ottoman sits on the yellow spectrum - hope that makes sense. I don't know what colour you had before but I feel that the carpet is bringing out the fact that the ottoman doesn't match the rest of the room - perhaps it was less obvious with the previous carpet?

Sorry to be long winded but I wanted to explain what I thought the problem was. I'd change the ottoman too - perhaps a tweed or tartan that picked up the colours of the rest of the room? Balmoral tartan in heather might work. If you go down this route get a decent sized sample and sit it on the floor where the Ottoman would go for a couple of days to see how you feel about it before recovering.

DrSophia · 04/02/2022 11:57

I like it and think it just needs to settle and you need to get used to it.

YABU because you've not provided any photos of your Ddogs. I mean really! Smile

GingerGloucester · 04/02/2022 11:58

@BoodleBug51 completely agree with this when we had ours laid it was like this then a few days later it was fine and the weird two tone effect went away

Wotrewelookinat · 04/02/2022 11:58

I like it.

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 04/02/2022 11:59

I really like it! Once you've walked over it and let it settle, it'll look much better Smile

Thatsplentyjack · 04/02/2022 12:00

I love it.

Thatsplentyjack · 04/02/2022 12:01

My carpet looked like this when it was fist fitted, just a bit darker. It doesn't now. After about 2 years it flattened. Still looks good though.

onetwothreeadventure · 04/02/2022 12:01

I like it too!

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 04/02/2022 12:02

Also @Evanted76, how do you have grass when you have two dogs?! We had lovely grass until our pup came home. Hes 18 months now and has turned out grass into a mud bath!!! Grin

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 04/02/2022 12:03

I honestly think it's lovely!

RainbowBridge21 · 04/02/2022 12:03

The carpet looks lovely quality, but I'm not keen on the colour (or the ottoman!) It's personal taste though you might just be a bit put off by the change and you might realise you like it after all in a couple of weeks.

SartresSoul · 04/02/2022 12:03

I don’t like it either, your room is lovely and the carpet just spoils it. Sorry.

hiredandsqueak · 04/02/2022 12:03

I have similar colours in my living room to your ottoman. I think it's the sofa colour that's the problem it needs to be darker either similar to the chair or the curtains. I have purple sofas and love them.

Campervangirl · 04/02/2022 12:04

I really like it.
I hate change, takes me ages to get used to a change in decor.
Live with it for a while before spending anymore money on new curtains etc as previously advised

RisingSunn · 04/02/2022 12:04

I agreed with you in the 1st photo. But the photo of the whole room looks lovely!

Fastforwardtospring · 04/02/2022 12:04

We had carpet layed in our front room just before Xmas after 25 years of polished floor boards (they were in need of being redone((again)) and couldn’t face it) So pleased with our carpet but did take a few weeks to get used to it, love it now, has made room so cosy and much warmer.

RuthW · 04/02/2022 12:05

Looks lovely
