To hate my lounge carpet? Honest opinions on my lounge carpet that was laid yesterday

Evanted76 · 04/02/2022 10:45

We wanted something neutral but practical as we have two dogs. So we chose this one which was laid yesterday. Because its two tone it looks totally different in my lounge than it did in the showroom! We even took a small sample home!

My heart sank when the fitters left. It looks like it can't decide what colour it is..it's a kind of mink at night and during the day it has a silver/grey look to it. We had the same carpet laid in our bedroom which looks stunning as our bedroom is a champagne/ dark brown theme. But in the lounge against the pastel colours of the ottoman and mauve curtains I just don't know what to think. Honest opinions please and also some ideas on tweaks on what I can do?

Maybe change the curtains and put a carpet-coloured throw on your sofa???

onedayoranother · 04/02/2022 11:26

The carpet is fine, just too much beige going on in the rest of the room.

ADisgruntledPelican · 04/02/2022 11:29

It's fine. Hoovering it in different directions has made it photograph badly. As a PP said you have lots of different colours in the room anyway: white; cream; grey; mauve. I'd swop in cushions in a similar colour and texture to the carpet; and possibly swap out the mauve curtains. It's interesting you say the living room is pastels because it doesn't give that impression in the photo - it's why the ottoman and the curtains stand out.

BrioNotBiro · 04/02/2022 11:30

Don't do anything yet, certainly not rush out and buy expensive new curtains, sofa etc.

Get used to it, see how the pile flattens, how it hides the dog hairs (!) then decide whether you still hate it and if so, then change furnishings.

I think it looks very cosy, I like your room!

IncompleteSenten · 04/02/2022 11:31

It looks fine.
It'll settle down as you walk over it

BrioNotBiro · 04/02/2022 11:31

I think we need a picture of the dogs in situ before we can really decide Grin

Glorieta · 04/02/2022 11:32

Hi OP

Your carpet is lovely but I think the ottoman is throwing the colour off as its dominating the centre of the room and making it look very busy.

I would think about recovering the ottoman plain mauve like the curtains to ground it a bit and like a PP add a grey tray with something yellow on it to tie the scheme together.

Get some fabric and a staple gun and go for it.

Gowithme · 04/02/2022 11:32

I would change the curtains and cushions to chocolate. I think it would all tie in better then.

DomesticatedZombie · 04/02/2022 11:35

Sorry, OP, I agree with you.

I would go for a far tougher wool carpet in a dark grey, personally.

eggandonion · 04/02/2022 11:36

If you want to get the ottoman covered, that's pretty inexpensive. My dog would spend his evenings on that ottoman.
I also think its a bit of a shock, a new carpet is such a big thing to see.

WeAreTheHeroes · 04/02/2022 11:37

I think it's lovely and works with the rest of the room in your photos. Can you post the details please or pm them to me?

BobHadBitchTits · 04/02/2022 11:37

You'll get used to it.

NYnewstart · 04/02/2022 11:41

Brown and grey don’t normally go together that well so it actually ties in your grey chair and browner other stuff. I think it looks nice.

LifeWobble · 04/02/2022 11:41

I think it looks nice!

If it helps - when we had our kitchen fitted we had to switch our worktop at the last minute for one with sparkly bits in it. When it was fitted I absolutely hated it - every time I came into the kitchen the sparkles were all I could see, dazzling my eyes. I was devastated (it was the end of a trying building project, I was unreasonably emotional!). After a few weeks I got used to it and I now love it, it’s my favourite thing about our kitchen

Anyway - moral of the story is live with it for a bit, your feelings may well change.

XjustagirlX · 04/02/2022 11:43

The issue is because it’s a greyish carpet with beige living room. Grey and beige don’t really work together. Could you change your sofa or get it received or just use a sofa throw?

MrsR87 · 04/02/2022 11:44

I really like it. I think it looks fine with the curtains and ottoman. I think it’s the sofa that it doesn’t particularly go with.

wanttomarryamillionaire · 04/02/2022 11:46

Its lovely

Ohyesthankyouglitter · 04/02/2022 11:46

Really like it. Give yourself at least two weeks before you do/buy anything else.

Jjjayfee · 04/02/2022 11:47

When I just looked at picture one I thought it looked odd but in the whole picture it looks lovely. Give it a month to settle then decide. You seem to have a designer's eye.

OperationDog · 04/02/2022 11:49

I think it's the ottoman that's jarring now. The colours and the check pattern don't go with the carpet.

It would be easier and a lot cheaper to have the ottoman recovered than replace the carpet..

Fifiesta · 04/02/2022 11:50

Definitely hold fire. With a few switches in soft furnishings you can have a totally new look .

We are currently gutting & redecorating what will be our future retirement bungalow. I have always loved grey and silver but, I am limiting its use in the bungalow. Well done for using a different colour palette. Just as avacado baths shout ‘80’s, grey carpets will say circa 2015…

LuluBlakey1 · 04/02/2022 11:51

I would get rid of or recover that big footstool thing - that clashes with everything- and put a rug there with a cream crewelwork covered footstool on it. You could have sort of milk coffee colour, a lavender, a green and blue in the crewelwork.

HeyMoana · 04/02/2022 11:51

I think it's lovely 🤷

withlotsoflove · 04/02/2022 11:51

@Kitsmummy

I also hate it! It looks like a patterned granny carpet.

Can you take it up and put it down in a different room where it might look I like it does upstairs?

Wow! Ageism on a carpet problem! 😡
AmberLynn1536 · 04/02/2022 11:51

It’s not the carpet that’s causing the issue it’s your yellow sofa and the ottoman, if you look at the grey chair in isolation it goes really well, it will probably be cheaper to replace the carpet than the furniture though.
